M
innedosa residents
were out and about
this weekend taking in the
Towns annual Fun Fest.
I felt thateverything
went well on the weekend.
Itsounds like everyone
hadfun and we saw lots
of people out which was
great, commented event
organizer, Erin Woodcock.
Although some the
weekends events were
threatened by storm
clouds and cool tempera-
tures, each event through-
out the weekend was well-
attended.
Fun Fest was kicked
of with the kids parade
on Friday afternoon and
concluded on Sunday with
Heritage Villages Heritage
Day.
We had a wonderful
group of volunteers this
yearthat really stepped
it up to make things hap-
pen,especially on Satur-
day withthe weather we
were dealing with.Hats
of to all of the volunteers,
withoutthem wewouldnt
be able tohaveFun Fest,
added Woodcock.
Following the ever-
popular parade on Satur-
day morning, many stuck
around to peruse the Fun
Fest Street Market. Faye
Bruce was the lucky win-
ner of the Street Market
Draw, which consisted of
prizes donated by various
vendors.
Tis years festival saw
a few new additions to
the schedule with perfor-
mances by Christina the
Crazy Hooper and Patrick
Gregoire, the magician
and while a thunderstorm
threatened the outdoor
stage, many gathered in-
side the 50+ Centre to take
in the visiting talents.
We also had the Win-
nipeg Blue Bombers Ul-
timate Fan Experience
Truck out throughout the
weekend and Boomer, the
team mascot, was a great
hit with the kids.
Will Masters and
Katie Haywood were
the winners of the Kids
prize pack that was do-
nated by Home Hardware
and Te Bargain Shop.
Jamie Calen won the
raf ed Blue Bomber Prize
Pack, which consisted of
six tickets to the bombers
July 17th game, an auto-
graphed football, and a
piece of turf from the old
stadium.
On Sunday, the day
was kicked of with Tal-
ent in the Park, featuring
a number of local talents
including Kristen Nerbas,
who recently performed
at Little Valley Jamboree,
Brendan and Autumn
Chartrand, a brother and
sister duo and Diana Daw-
son.
T e Lawn Mower
Poker Derby was a big hit
Sunday afternoon seeing
15 mowers registers for the
event.
T e Lawn Mower
Poker Derby was great. Ev-
eryone had a great time,
despite the cool tempera-
tures. Tis is an event that
we will defnitely be bring-
ing back for next year.
We were happy to have
Minnedosa Minor Ball
helping out with check
points and traf c control,
added Woodcock.
Best hand in the Lawn
Mower Poker Derby went
to Shane Saler and worst
hand was awarded to Sally
Labelle. Brian Evenson was
awarded best costume.
Sunday also brought
one of the kids favourite
events the Rivers Edge
Duck Drop. Don Farr and
Heather Currie were the
winners of this event and
$900 was raised for the Riv-
ers Edge Recreation Park.
Te Dunk Tank was a
great hit and ended up rais-
ing $250 for the Personal
Care Homes patio project.
Matt Rapsky, Kyle Mofat,
Barb Haneshewski, Mike
Tarleton, Jessie Smith,
Darcy Bialas were great
sports for repeatedly get-
ting dunked into icy cold
water for the enjoyment
ofeveryone that came out
after the storm to watch,
especially all thekids.
With the big week-
end past, event organiz-
ers are now calling on
the Minnedosa public for
feedback on what they
could do next year to bet-
ter the event.
We want to hear what
you thought about Fun
Fest. We appreciate public
feedback and want to hear
what people thought of the
events and what people
want to see in the com-
ing years.Tere is a short
online survey through our
Facebook page that we
would love to have people
f ll out.It will only help
make Fun Fest better, ex-
plained Woodcock.
We v e a l r e a dy
gotsome great ideas
fornext year and were
looking forward to shar-
ing them once we get
ourselves organized.
Woodcock and the
entire Fun Fest commit-
tee greatly appreciate ev-
eryone who was involved
in Fun Festvolunteers,
service groups and com-
munity organizations,
sponsors, vendors, anyone
that ofered donations and
everyone that came out to
enjoy the weekend.

T
he Minnedosa Cham-
ber of Commerce Re-
tail Committee hosted a
new promotion this year
during Fun Fest. Known as
the Fun Fest Frenzy, par-
ticipants had to correctly
answer questions about
local businesses. To fnd
the answer to the ques-
tions, participants had to
go to each of the ffteen
featured Minnedosa busi-
nesses. While participants
did not have to make a
purchase to take part in
the Frenzy, this promotion
did get people through the
doors and roaming the
aisles of local businesses.
Hopefully, if they did not
make a purchase that day,
they spotted something
that will bring them back
to that business to shop at
a later date.
28 people complet-
ed their Fun Fest Frenzy
questionnaire and submit-
ted it for a chance to win
$25.00 Minnedosa Money.
Minnedosa Money can
only be redeemed for pur-
chases made at Minnedosa
businesses. Te lucky win-
ner of the prize was Rylan
Bilcowski.
During the Fun Fest
Frenzy, local businesses
also competed in a best
dressed window contest.
Shoppers voted for their
favourite Minnedosa busi-
ness window display and
the business garnering the
most votes was Te Fash-
ion House. As part of the
winning honour, watch
for a feature article on this
long standing member of
the local business com-
munity in an upcoming
edition of Te Tribune.
All who voted for the best
window display were also
entered into a draw for $50
Minnedosa Money. Te
winner of this draw was
Lorrie Laming.
Chamber Retail Com-
mi ttee Chai rperson,
Annette Haywood was
pleased with the new pro-
motion. I think people
had a lot of fun with it, said
Annette. Tere were fami-
lies out walking from store

goal of getting people into
our businesses. Te Fun
Fest Frenzy is hoped to
continue next summer.

Our communitys many volunteers who were in-
volved with the organization and success of last week-
ends numerous Fun Fest and Ag Society Fair events de-
serve a very well deserved round of applause. Hats of to

cial grand openings this past weekend. Also deserving
of a community thank you are the many spectators who
came out to enjoy the many attractions that the weekend
had to ofer. It was great to see so much going on and so
many people milling about our community. Minnedosas

Hats Of to Minnedosa Merchants
Dear Editor,
T
his letter is long over-
due. Every week when
Im shopping or flling up my
car around town, I am often
struck by the thought of what
supportive people the mer-
chants of Minnedosa are. So many of them hire high
school students, training them in the skills needed to
serve the public in a friendly and ef cient manner. On
almost every occasion, the service I receive is exem-
plary! Because of the generosity of our wonderful mer-
chants, I have had the wonderful
experience of getting to know gen-
erations of students. Te students
in turn, have been given the gift
of receiving invaluable work ex-
perience; a gift will keep on giv-
ing throughout their lifetimes.
Tank you very much mer-
chants of Minnedosa. Shopping at
home is always such a pleasure.

A
s waterways across
the province begin
to recede and submerged
land becomes visible once
again, the Minnedosa Golf
and Country Club is also
beginning to repair from
this seasons food waters.
We have been mak-
ing some head way this
past week. We have got the
majority of the water of
of the course but the turf
does still need some dry
time, explains resident
golf pro, Deb Pritchard.
On Saturday, grounds
staf was able to get water
pumps back in action, also
allowing them to return to
mechanical irrigation on
the rest of the course.
In areas where the
water has been removed
we will now give it some
drying time and then pro-
ceed to cut, over-seed and
fertilize to get the greens
back in shape. Our big-
gest hold up will be the
5th green as it was com-
pletely submerged but we
are optimistic that we will
be able to revive it.
Te Club is hopeful
to have all 18 holes back
in action in late July, early
August, depending mainly
on the sunshine and pre-
cipitation we receive.
We may have four ex-
tra holes open by the end
of this week1, 7, 8 and 9.
Tese holes make a con-
sistent loop with the rest of
the course. However, the
remaining holes we will
hold of opening until the
rest of the course is ready,
explained Pritchard.
Flooding issues cou-
pled with cool, windy tem-
peratures has impacted
play all around the region,
with many near-by cours-
es seeing player numbers
down as well.
T e Senior Mens
tournament held last week
went well. We received a
lot of positive feedback.
Te Senior Womens tour-
nament this week will pro-
ceed with the same format
as the Mensplaying the
same nine holes twice and
capping the entries at 72.
As the course continues
to dry-up day-by-day,
grounds crews have been
working diligently to en-
sure a quality course for
members and visitors
alike.
Recently we have
had crews out completing
some repair work on the
course, which we could
not get to earlier due to
the f ooding. One area
they have been focusing
on is the culvert on the
eighth hole that had been
washed out by the food
waters, added Pritchard.

T
he Minnedosa Drama
Club held the frst
reading of the groups sec-
ond annual fall produc-
tion, a farce-comedy en-
titled, Charleys Aunt.
Tis year we have a
larger cast and are tak-
ing on a more ambitious
production. We received
a great response from the
community after our ini-
tial production last fall,
which makes us feel it is
possible to take on this
more ambitious proj-
ect, commented Donna
Alexander, executive
member of the Drama
Club and co-director of
this years production.
On Monday, July 14th
the cast and crew met for
the f rst time to partake
in the initial group read-
through of the script cre-
ated by Brandon Tomas.
Charleys Aunt is a
light-hearted comedy
about two college-aged
bachelors who fnd them-
selves in love with two
girls and in order to keep
them nearby, the boys
arrange for the ladies to
meet their wealthy aunt
who is visiting from Brazil.
When she cancels her
visit last minute, the mil-
lionaire Aunt sends the
boys into cataclysmic con-
fusion. Te two solve the
problem by drafting their
fellow college pal into
a skirt and wig to act as
Charleys Aunt in order to
appease the two women.
Charleys Aunt was frst
produced at the Royalty
Teatre in London in Oc-
tober of 1892. It is set in
the 19th Century Victo-
rian.
Mary Dalton will re-
turn this year as the pro-
ductions director with
Donna Alexander and
Jackie Birch assisting as
co-directors.
T e cast was se-
lected after auditions,
which were held in mid-
June. Te cast consists
of James Tavernor, Eric
McLaughl i n, Dyl an
Woodcock, Art Dalton,
Blair Grant, Jamie Willis,
Bethannie Lancoure,
Brittney McDonald,
Melissa Clark, and Nicole
McLenehan.
We had a great turn-
out to the auditions and
we are quite excited to
have some new talent tak-
ing to the stage, some who
have never been involved
in a production before,
continued Alexander.
Te Club will be pre-
paring the production to
be presented to the com-
munity in late November.
Rehearsals will begin in
September.
Last years production
went over very well in the
community, seeing both
evening performances
sold-out well in advance
of the event.
We had some trouble
last year with rehearsal
space but this year we
have been lucky that the
Town of Minnedosa has
donated the second foor
of the Town Hall that we
will be utilizing for re-
hearsals as well as set
building.
Along with a larger
cast this season, the Club
has also taken on a play
that requires three dif-
ferent sets which will re-
quire a number of helping
hands.
We will certainly
need a number of volun-
teers to help out with set
building and everything
else. Right now we are
in the beginning stages
but we will be collecting
names for when that time
comes.
Anyone interested in
getting involved in this
years production is en-
couraged to contact an
executive member of the
club.

this past week with Mani-

camp that concluded with
a Manitoba Cup competi-
tion on Saturday.
Te provincial training
camp brought a number
of top-notch athletes to
Minnedosas waters from
July 9th through to the
13th.
Minnedosa Lake is
considered to be one of the
best sites for competitive
paddling in Canada and
was the choice venue for
the 1999 Pan Am Games.
Funded t hrough
Sports Manitoba, the pro-
vincial paddling club of-
fers year-round paddling
programs for youth and
adults.
Manitoba Cup events
are typically 200, 500, or
1000 meters but can be
longer for specifc events.
Other training centres be-
sides Minnedosa include
Winnipeg, Selkirk, Sanford,
Brandon and St. Teresas
Point.
Based on a number
of factors, paddling club
members are selected to
the provincial team on an
annual basis. Provincial
team athletes are further
streamed to Canada Games
development programs
and national team athlete
development programs.
Having the Manitoba
Provincial Paddling Club
utilize the Minnedosa wa-
ters was a great opportu-
nity for local paddlers with
the Minnedosa Kayak Club
to train and practice with
high-caliber athletes who
have participated in some
of the highest paddling
competitions, commented
Janice Maguire, coordina-
tor of the Minnedosa Kayak
Club.
Minnedosa Kayak

interested to join them

Gearing Up For Rockin the Fields
By JENNIFER PAIGE
M
innedosas favou-
rite summer music
festival is just around the
corner. On August 1st to
3rd Minnedosa will once
again host a number of
rock groups at the 11th
annual Rockin the Fields
music festival.
We have a great line
up this year and everyone
involved is really excited.
Since last year we have
worked on-site to make
a number of upgrades to
buildings and facilities and
they will be quite notice-
able to fans, said Darcy
Bialas, event organizer.
Tis years lineup in-
cludes Until Red, Harle-
quin, Te Sheepdogs, Wild
T and the Spirit, Honey-
moon Suite, Bret Michaels,
Te Brothers Landreth, Tu-
pelo Honey, Danko Jones,
and Tree Days Grace.
Ticket sales are go-
ing really well. We have
pretty much sold out
campground A and are
now working to fll camp-
ground B . But as far as at-
tendance, I think we are on
track to reach the 20 per-
cent increase goal we were
aiming for, continued Bi-
alas.
Along with great mu-
sic the August long event
will also include some on-
site fun and games with
a Texas Hold em Poker
tournament and car show
scheduled for Saturday,
beach volleyball on Sun-
day and the fan favourite,
decorate your campsite
competition.
We have had great
attendance and support
in recent years and will be
continuing to give back to
the communities in South-
west Manitoba through the
service groups that vol-
unteer. Tis past year we
also initiated a scholarship
for MCI grads towards the
music and arts as well as
were able to donate funds
and the site to Minnedosas
frst Relay for Life event.
Bialas, on behalf of
Rockin the Fields, would
like to thank the numerous
volunteers and support-
ers without who this event
would not be possible.
Tis event is a big
project and it takes many
hands to make it all come
together. It would not be
possible to hold this suc-
cessful event without the
help we get from our vol-
unteers and supporters.
As the days wind down we
are sitting in a nice posi-
tion and are excited and
ready for the big weekend
to arrive.

rops t hroughout
much of South Park-
land showed a signifcant
improvement over this
past week as a result of the
warmer and drier weather.
Crop losses due to
f ooding and standing
water were not as large
as frst anticipated due to
the favourable weather
over the last 7-10 days.
Although we would all
like much warmer, sum-
mer like temperatures, hot
and dry conditions will
bake soils and burn up
our shallow rooted crops.
Moderate tempera-
tures into the mid 20s and
light weekly showers of
5-10 mm are still neces-
sary to allow our crops and
more specifcally allow our
canola crop to recover. Tis
is especially important for
crops which have now en-
tered their reproductive
stages of development.
Fusarium Head
Blight Risk Map - Te
Fusarium Head Blight
Risk Map was updated
earlier this week with the
entire province now at a
low to moderate risk for
fusarium development.
Te obvious question is
how can this be given the
excess moisture over the
last number of weeks.
T is map is based
upon the disease triangle
that states that the exis-
tence of a disease requires
three factors: the interac-
tion of a susceptible host, a
virulent pathogen, and an
environment favourable
for disease development.
So although we may
have a susceptible host and
a virulent pathogen the
environmental conditions
play a critical role in dis-
ease development and the
risk forecast on the map.
FHB infection is fa-
voured by extended peri-
ods of high moisture, high
relative humidity (>90%)
and moderately warm
temperatures (between 15
to 30C/ 59 to 86F). Al-
though we have warmed
up our humidity levels
have dropped signifcantly.
It is important to note that
these maps are produced
daily and can change dra-
matically from day to day
as humidity levels change.
Humidity can also
be af ected by wind so
if you are in a sheltered
heavily treed area your
relative humidity may
be at higher levels than
indicated or refected
in the FHB Risk Map.
Depending on the
weather, wheat can move
through the heading to
fowering stage in as little
as fve days to more than
a week so if afungicide
for FHB suppression is
planned,scout your felds
daily to ensure proper tim-
ing.

Lawrence lived life fully until his death, aged ninety, at the Minnedosa Care Home.
Lawrence was born on the family farm in the R.M. of Clanwilliam to John Birger and
Winifred Alice (Sillen) Sjoberg, the oldest of his generation of many cousins. Baptised
and conf rmed at Scandinavia Lutheran Church, Lawrence and Edna Wilhelmina
(Oman) were to be the second last couple married in that building on October 25th, 1952.
As a child, Lawrence shouldered many responsibilities on the farm. His fathers work related
absences and mothers illnesses necessitated that Lawrence take on tasks both in the home
and on the land. Leaving school after grade eight to help on the farm was hard for Lawrence.
However, not one to shirk responsibility and a quick learner, he became a very particular and
hard worker, whether it be stooking at harvest or spring-cleaning after a winter of wood fred
stoves and furnaces. A mid-life farm accident resulted in back surgery and necessitated a
change in work focus. While continuing to be a farmer, Lawrence also applied his meticulous
nature to painting, exterior and interior, including the painting of kitchen and bathroom
cabinets that resulted in a factory sprayed appearance. He enjoyed his summer work as right
hand man to Ernie Gusdal at Johnson Cabins at Clear Lake. Never idle, Lawrence maintained
huge vegetable and fower gardens, helped Edna can and preserve, cut thousands of quilt
squares, and played more games of cards, scrabble and crokinole than anyone could count.
Along with Edna, Lawrence ensured that extended family and many friends were made
to feel welcome to visit the farm anytime. Lawrences brother, Don and Trudy (Woldrich)
along with their four children were annual summer visitors. Relatives from further afeld
in Canada, the U.S. and Sweden always had a home away from home at the farm. Christmas
and family birthdays fgured large for Lawrences extended family, and it was not unusual
for thirty or more people to gather at Lawrence and Ednas home for games and feasting.
Always practical, in his late seventies, Lawrence decided that being closer to shopping and
medical care was becoming more important. Along with Edna, he moved to Minnedosa to
a home on a large lot where he could continue to entertain and garden. He embraced town
life, fnding new friends and cribbage partners at the Legion and in his new neighbourhood.
As decl i ni ng heal th and the l oss of Edna took thei r tol l , Lawrence moved to
the Mi nnedosa Personal Care Home, where he conti nued to make new f ri ends
amongst both resi dents and staf f . Lawrence s f ami l y i s i ndebted to the f ront l i ne
workers there who l oved teasi ng Lawrence as much as he l oved teasi ng them.
Lawrence leaves behind son David (Dianne), daughter Donna (Garnet), grandchildren Kate, Erik
(Shelley), Josh (Summer) and great-grandson Hudson Birger Sjoberg, whom Lawrence enjoyed
meeting just a day before his death. He also leaves his much-loved brother Donald (Trudy) and
their children and extended family and friends who will miss Lawrences famous zest for life.

May the winds of love
blow softly
and whisper in your ear.
We will always love
and miss you
and wish that you were here.
For all that life has given us
and all thats left to do.
We know no greater treasure
than the days we
had with you.
Missing you always,
your family.

God took him home,
it was his will,
But in our hearts we
love him still:
his memory is as dear today
as in the hour he
passed away.
We often sit and think of him.
From the family.

Local Clydes Show Well at Fair

DARRYL HOLYK
T
he 132rd edition of the
Minnedosa Fair was
hosted by the Minnedosa
Agricultural Society on
Saturday, July 12th and
Sunday, July 13th.
Horse traf c on the
grounds was heavy this
year with various compe-
tition classes including
English and Western, Min-
iatures and Heavy Horse.
Te event went well.
Te number of displays
was down slightly this
year but the horse entries
and the number of specta-
tors were up, commented
Bruce Sharpe, President of
the Agriculture Society.
For many spectators,
the highlight of any fair
is seeing the handsome
six-horse hitch event. Tis
year, six entries competed
with last years champion,
Minnedosas own Brad
Delgaty of Delgaty Clydes
again capturing frst place
for his six horse hitch.
Each entry in the Ag
Fair is judged and winners
are awarded prize money.
Tis year the Ag Society
awarded approximately
$9,000.00 throughout the
various competition classes.
T is year we had
Sherri Lewis from Car-
rington, ON as our judge
for the event. She has
shown horses and judged
competitions all over
North America. Tis was
the frst time she has come
to Minnedosa to judge,
explained Sharpe.
In conjunction with
the horse show, the Ag So-
ciety also held its Home
Living classes in the white
display building show-
casing entries of baking,
sewing, knitting, crafts,
art, plants, preserves and
more.
Prize winning bak-
ing was again auctioned
of Saturday night. Sharpe
notes that the auction sales
were slightly down from
previous years but the
event was still a great suc-
cess even seeing few new
attendees.
Final numbers and
further results were not
available at press time.
