The Liberty Bell symbolizes freedom in the USA. It is located in Philadelphia, PA. The bell was
originally cast in 1752 in London, England. It was commissioned as a bell for the Pennsylvania State
House, now called Independence Hall. The original bell hung from a tree behind the Pennsylvania
State House, and it was called the State House Bell or the Province Bell. It was first called the Liberty
Bell around 1839 by anti-slavery publications. Since 2003, it is currently located in the Liberty Bell
Center adjacent to Independence Mall where it was housed in a glass pavilion since 1976.

The bell is 2 feet tall and 12 feet around. It weighs 2080 lbs, just over a ton. The cracks dimensions
are 24.5 inches long by inch wide. Across the top of the bell is an inscription, PROCLAIM LIBERTY
THROUGHOUT ALL THE LAND UNTO ALL THE INHABITANTS THEREOF LEV. XXV X.

The first crack occurred during a test ringing. Afterwards, it was recast 2 times in 1753 by melting
down and using the metal from the original bell and adding copper to make it less brittle. The
restored bell was probably rung at the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in
Philadelphia on July 8, 1776but not on July 4th as many believe as no public announcement was
made of the Declaration of Independence on that day. The ringing of the bell announced many
important events in early American history, including Presidential elections and deaths.

It is widely reported and accepted that the bell cracked again on July 8, 1835, while being rung at the
funeral of John Marshall, the 4th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and one of the signers of the
Declaration of Independence. However, an author for the National Park Service suggests that it most
likely was cracked sometime between 1841 and 1845, either on the Fourth of July or on Washingtons
birthday.
