Homer (gr. ) je polulegendarni antiki grki pesnik koji je, po nekim pretpostavkama, iveo krajem 8.

u 7. veku pne. Kao to su nepouzdani podaci o Homerovu ivotu, tako su nepouzdane sve vesti o vremenu
njegova ivota i domovini. Sastavljai Homerovih ivotopisa odreivali su vreme njegova ivota vrlo razliito. Tako
je po nekima on iveo za vreme trojanskoga rata (1193-1183); po drugima 100 ili 400 godina nakon toga
rata. Herodot kae da je Homer savremenik Hesiodov.
