PLANNING 2005

A. Media Literacy Education Program (MLEP)

Improvement of modules and making of course descriptions into inserts and

for the website for easy reference.
More courses to be developed like Film Dialogue and Social Conscientization
and Media and Community Development: The State of Philippine Media and
the Challenges for Community Development Workers and others modules
especially on literary dialogue.
Concentrate on Luzon areas - schools, formation houses, communities,
parishes and other mandated organizations. Orientation/awareness level on
media or depending on the need and request of the local partner.
But, a follow up training on areas where we gave orientation seminars are
needed. We do it by area like in Agusan, we make San Francisco the venue of
the trainor’s training from Prosperidad, Patin-ay, Rosario parishes and
communities. These trainings are skills-based. From the orientation/leveling
off we gave, they are now ready to learn the skills of being active (critical)
audiences. For other areas, like the local partners we have in Luzon or
Visayas, we have to decide on the venue, date and time. At least, we have this
follow-up training per quarter, (second quarter - Luzon, third quarter -
Visayas, fourth quarter - Mindanao)
Outline:
Review of State of Media
Importance and Relevance of Media in Parish Work or for the
parishioners
Analysis/Critiquing of News, TV/Radio Programs and printed
materials, plays and religious activities
Deconstruction of Media Content
Original Construction
Effective Media Program for the Parish, How to use Media for
catechesis and educated youth about media (planning-realistic
programs)
Highlight in the modules that media does not only mean the modern means of
communication but folk media and traditional means of communication.
Widen our audience to NGOs, community development workers.

B. Teatro’t Panitikan (Group Study and Theatre Program)

organized to gather ideas for the program. Attendees will be members of literary
and theatre guilds in different schools. Attendees who expressed interest in being
volunteers will for the core group.

theatre:

Playing of instruments, sounds
Sponsoring of new theatre/musical groups who want to showcase their
works
4. The program will include: quarterly session, special projects (partnerships with
other groups) and outreach programs in communities.
5. As project, we can have an inventory of folk media in the local areas for research
and what

Description

This program is a combination of group study and theatre.

This will be organized/prepared by the core group of the
panitikan@titusbrandsma and this will be the official name of the sessions.
Can be community and school-based activity
Introduction of the concept “literary dialogue”
A quarterly session of dialogue, sharing and critical analysis of oral media
content such as folklores, legends, epics, myths, short stories, poetry and
proverbs. Discussion will include sharing of experience, relevance and
application in present day situations (family, community and society)
 All forms of ORAMEDIA
Theatre: play/drama, dance, use of musical instruments, singing/ballads
Addition of theatrical forms will make the sharing session lively, draws
more attention, deepen understanding of literary forms, and more dramatic
Socio-cultural activity rather than play-acting for entertainment.
Appropriate method for studying and analyzing their problems.
 Theatre is a live experience.
Folk media (theatre included) are comparatively cheap. They do not have
to be imported and therefore involve no foreign exchange, a scarce
commodity except for oil kingdoms. They belong to the community and
not to individuals, state or private/public industry. There is no threat of
cultural colonialism and foreign ideological domination.
As an indigenous form, theatre helps further cultural explorations into the
psyche and value systems of a people.
Folk Media are not quaint relics of the past but vigorously active and
highly functional cultural institutions performing functions vital to the
well being of society: they provide entertainment, disseminate
information, inculcate socially accepted norms and values and perform a
general socializing function.

Target Groups

Small community theatres within BCCs and barrios

Literary and theatre groups in schools in Manila and other areas
Literature and theatre students, enthusiasts, actor and actress
Local theatre group within area like PETA

Rationale

Need for critical analysis of all media content, not only electronic media
such as radio, film and television
Appropriate time for appreciation and literary criticism
How to use this indigenous literary culture into something useful which
help people manage their life and develop their principles and attitudes in
life.
Enable people to appreciate indigenous culture.
Form of media education which develops critical stances through
analyzing, interpreting these literary pieces.
In theatre: it is another way of affirming life’s lessons and convictions
It appeals to the senses of the audience, touch their emotions which
enables them to reflects on life and enjoy its simplest pleasures. It gives
them an immediate capture of into life’s social, economic, spiritual and
moral underpinnings through realizations depicted in the drama/play.
Develop new ideals and positive worldviews.
How to best employ folk media in community development?
Recognizable vehicle for social education and consciousness raising.
As an educational tool, theatre can help deepen the powers of
comprehension and memory. If the people are involved in creating plays
their understanding of the issues can be deepened.

Theatre:

It can help initiate an action-reflection-action process, which can lead to

change.
It can illuminate issues in simple, direct and challenging way.
If it grows out of the community it can reflect the community with a high
degree of accuracy. This helps the people to identify instantly with the
issues presented.
Indigenous facilities are to be used; thus technical facilities and costumes
are not necessary.
Since its structure is simple it can be managed by one and all. Literacy and
high technical skills are not necessary for this form of theatre.

A presentation that talks to a community of people and expresses

what they as community all know, but no one is saying: thoughts,
images, observations and discoveries that are not printed in newspapers
or made into movies; truth that maybe shocking and honesty that is
vulgar to the aesthete.

Procedure

Prepare: Materials to be used for the session (legend, fable, short story, “kwentong
bayan”, poetry and folk literature)

Mini play or drama of the chosen literature for the session.

Processing: Post-performance discussion (PPD). This would include sharing of

experiences based on the values of experiences presented in the play.
Identify community problems that can best relate to the play.

Included also in the processing is to prepare alternative story endings that

would possibly respond to the problems of the community. This will be in
the form of again a mini play to be presented on the session or the next
then to process it again.

This would serve as a problem solving exercise for the community

wherein all are given a chance to participate.

C. pelikula@titusbrandsma

Working on the outreach programs and concentrating on other universities in

Metro Manila.
We are looking for a school with an unestablished film institute or program
and help the school with it.
We will come up with a list of schools to work on this coming school year and
decide what school is the best for us. We are targeting public
schools/universities.
We also have a pending invitation in Tuguegarao and organize a film festival
there for the alumni of St. Louie University.
We wanted to have also a separate viewing room for our regular informal
screenings so that we can choose our lineup in advance.
Publishing of reflections and sharing of the “titusian” audience (web forum)
Organizing of Spirituality of Storytelling. Invite writers of known movies
(writer of Magnifico and Armando Lao).
D. Research

Spirituality of Journalists and other media practitioners. (the spirit that moves
them)
Finish the final analysis of research 3 and publish it with research 2.

E. Networking Efforts

Come up with seminars in partnership with PAME and other network groups
such as ACN.
Partner with DEP Ed for their program in honing teachers (the program of
revolutionizing education)
Strengthen our efforts and make ourselves known.
Production of brochures, inserts, calling cards and banners.

F. Titus Brandsma Award - Philippines

Launch a promotional campaign about Titus Brandsma. Make it known in the

circles through local media. For example we introduce it thoroughly in our
seminars especially the award efforts on outstanding journalists. Have a
special portion for the introduction on the award. I suggest we do the
campaign for this year. Setting up of posters, brochure inserts, uploading on
the website, application for TBA-Phil and after a year of campaign then we do
again the search. Preparation for next year’s award season so that it can have
impact and effectivity. We also to put up feedbacking mechanisms as the BOT
suggested. This will help us in the personality check of each candidate, the
candidate who best epitomized the life of Titus.

G. Internal Program/Formation

Series of orientation session on the student friary, novitiate, postulants and

college.
Set up a regular program for the formation.
Make an effective information dissemination program / communication
system/scheme.

H. Organization and Staff Development

Trainings and sessions on media education, skills training and others.

Computers: fixing of the internet connection in the new computer,
reformatting of white computer, just so to avoid hanging, repair printer and if
possible to have a dvd burner.
