ACTIVITY 2 :

DATA ANALYSIS

a)Two Suitable Problem Solving Strategies

b)Presentation of Data

c)Conclusion from the Data Obtained

a)Two suitable problem solving strategies:
Since it is a 400meter event ,hence the distance between starting line and finishing line of
Lane1, Lane 2, Lane 3, Lane 4, Lane 5, Lane 6, Lane 7 and Lane 8 must be 400 meter.
So, we have to calculate the shortest distance between the starting line and finishing line
of each lane to make sure that the lanes are 400 meter long.
We use two methods to solve this problem:
i) First Method
We can calculate the shortest distance between starting line and the finishing line of each
lane by using this method:

Shortest distance between starting line and finishing line of nth lane=Distance of
each lane-400m

(*Since it is a 400 meter event)

So,
The shortest distance between starting line and the finishing line of 1
st
lane
= 400-400
=0.00m (is given in the table)
The shortest distance between starting line and the finishing line of 2
nd
lane
=407.542-400
=7.542
=7.54m(2d.p.)
The shortest distance between starting line and the finishing line of 3
rd
lane
=415.082-400
=15.082
=15.08m(2 d.p.)
The shortest distance between starting line and the finishing line of 4
th
lane
=422.624-400
=22.624
=22.62m(2 d.p.)
The shortest distance between starting line and the finishing line of 5
th
lane
=430.164-400
=30.164
=30.16m(2 d.p.)
The shortest distance between starting line and the finishing line of 6
th
lane
=437.704-400
=37.704
=37.70m(2 d.p.)
The shortest distance between starting line and the finishing line of 7
th
lane
=445.246-400
=45.246
=45.25m(2 d.p.)
The shortest distance between starting line and the finishing line of 8
th
lane
=452.786-400
=52.786
=52.79m(2 d.p.)

ii)Second method
From the data that we collected and obtained by using the first method, we know that:

The shortest distance between starting line and finishing line of lane 1 is 0.00m
meanwhile the 7.54m is the shortest distance between starting line and finishing line of
lane 2.
By using the substation of the shortest distance between starting line and finishing line of
lane 2 and 1,the difference of the shortest distance is 7.54m.
Since, the common difference,L
n
-L
n-1
is constant, namely 7.54m. Hence, we can solve
this problem by using the Progression formula:
Tn=a=(n-1)d
where a is 0
n is nth lane
d is 7.54 (difference of the shortest distance between starting line and finishing line of
lane 2 and 1 )

Lane 2
=0.00+(2-1)7.54
=0+7.54
=7.54m
Lane 3
=0+(3-1)7.54
=0+2(7.54)
=15.08m
Lane 4
=0+(4-1)7.54
=0+3(7.54)
=22.62m
Lane 5
=0+(5-1)7.54
=0+4(7.54)
=30.16m
Lane 6
=0+(6-1)7.54
=0+5(7.54)
=37.70m
Lane 7
=0+(7-1)7.54
=0+6(7.54)
=45.25m
Lane 8
=0+(8-1)7.54
=0+7(7.54)
=52.79m

b)Presentation of Data:

nth

starting line
and finishing line(m)
(2 decimal places)

L
n
-L
n
-1(m)
1 0.00 0.00
2 7.54 7.54
3 15.08 7.54
4 22.62 7.54
5 30.16 7.54
6 37.70 7.54
7 45.25 7.54
8 52.79 7.54

Table 2

c) Conclusion from the data obtained in Table 2.
Since it is a 400m event ,therefore we have to make sure the event is carried out fairly. As
the distance of each lane will be increased when circumference of circle and the radius of
circle are increased, so we calculate the shortest distance between starting line and
finishing line of Lane2 to Lane 8.By using the two methods to calculate the shortest
distance between starting line and finishing line, the result of the shortest distance of 1
st

lane is 0m , 2
nd
lane is 7.54m, 3
rd
lane is 15.08m, 4
th
lane is 22.62m, 5
th
lane is 30.16m ,
6
th
lane is 37.70m , 7
th
lane is 45.25m and 8
th
lane is 52.79m. I found that the distance of
starting from the finishing line is become longer from the lane 2 to lane 8 and the
distance of each lane to its previous lane is 7.54m.So, the shortest distance of each lane is
increased by 7.54m, it also proved that the shortest distance between starting line and
finishing line is an arithmetic progression. When the athlete is starting their run at 2
nd
lane,
they have to stand 7.54m far away from the starting line so that he/she will run 400m
long not 407.542m.
