Assessment: The teacher understands and uses multiple
methods of assessment to engage learners in their own
growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the
teachers and learners decision making.
Running Record Case Study
During my Winter 2013 semester
at Madonna University, I was enrolled in
Theories and Principles of Reading
Instruction. One of the requirements for
this course was to complete a Running
Record Case Study. I was able to pick a
book for a child and assess him on his
reading skills. The child that read was
observed in competencies, how he
approached unknown words, self-
correction behaviors, fuency, and
retelling. At the beginning of the
assessment, it was difcult to keep up
with Vincent because he was reading
very quickly and fuently; however, when
he began to make errors, he began to
slow his reading down so it made it a little
more manageable for me to keep up.
I observed the reader in
directionality, in that he knew that he had
to read from top to bottom and left to
right, and one-to-one matching. I also
observed the student when he came
across words he was not familiar with and
did not know. At these diferent points,
the student would use meaning or picture
cues, sentence structure, and visual
letters and sound identifcation cues to
help him fgure out the unknown word.
All of these were observed and noted with
the running record.
Refection
Running records are a factual,
detailed, written account over a span of
time. Actions are described and quotes
are recorded as precisely as possible.
Commentary or interpretation about the
recording is written separately from the
actual account. As the recorder, I was
able to observe and write for a period of
time, focusing on one child at a time.
This was great for me to
participate in and observe because it

gave me an opportunity to complete a
running record, which I had never done
before. Before this class, I was not
familiar with what a running record was.
Completing this case study allowed me to
become aware of the conventions needed
for the record sheet and how to score it
overall. Overall, this experience was
signifcant for me and will help me in my
future.
