woman: a bright, energetic and principled leader who is not beholden to the landlords, developers or their investment bankers: Jenifer Rajkumar. Ivy League educated and a Stanford Law graduate, Jenifer is a civil rights lawyer who worked at the National Womans Law Center in Washington, DC. Rajkumar has excelled in her position as local Dem- ocratic district leader and has received endorsements from a wide swath of our commu- nity: ranging from China- town leaders to the Sierra Club; from advocates for the disabled to trade unions; from community activists to political reformers. Jenifer was chosen by City & State as a Rising Star: 40 Under 40. Jenifer is the real deal: committed to our benefit, not the real estate lobby. We endorse Jenifer Rajkumar for City Council. Borough President: Weve never had a borough president from down- town: someone who lives, works and raises a family here; someone who knows our problems and how to solve them. Someone like Julie Menin. Serving as chair of the local community board for seven years, Menin steered our community through the aftermath of 9/11, and is intimately involved in downtowns rejuvenation and growth. As a watchdog on the Lower Manhattan Develop- ment Corporation, Julie exposed waste of taxpay- ers funds and won a $200 million victory against Con Edison when it tried to raise our rates and pocket public funds. Julie got more schools for downtown and fought for more affordable housing. Menin is the only candidate in the race who stood up against the NYU expansion and tried to get it moved to the WTC site, and who also opposed the positive outcome reflects the good character and integrity we have long witnessed John display as comptroller. It is for these reasons that we proudly endorse John Liu for Mayor. Comptroller: Should a job as important as the comptroller, the citys chief nancial ofcer, be used to redeem a disgraced politicians career? We think not. Besides, Eliot Spitzer described himself as a steamroller and that is the last thing a comptroller should be. On the other hand, Scott Stringer has excelled as Manhattan borough president. He took a hands-on approach at reforming the community boards, not to mention formulating dozens of policy ideas that benet our borough and our city. Unhesitatingly, we endorse Scott Stringer for Comptroller. Public Advocate: Four candidates are running for public advocate, including local state senator, Daniel Squadron. Daniel has served us well and would make a ne public advocate. We endorse Daniel Squadron. Council District 2: In the East Villages 2 nd Council District, incumbent Rosie Mendez is facing two chal- lengers with community roots, Richard Del Rio and Juan Pagan. However, Mendezs accom- plishments in her eight years as councilmember are so broad and so impressive that there is no question that we endorse Rosie Mendez. Council District 3: On the West Side, the contest to replace Christine Quinn is between civil rights attorney Yetta Kurland and Community Board 4 chair Corey Johnson. Corey has an impressive record and garnered wide support. For the 3 rd Council District we endorse Corey Johnson. closure of St Vincent's Hospital and the subsequent construction of a luxury high-rise on the site. Her three uptown opponents, city councilmembers Gale Brewer, Jessica Lappin and Robert Jackson, all voted for the NYU and St. Vincents deals. Manhattan needs a proven leader with a solid track record, dedicated to us. That is the reason we endorse Julie Menin for Borough President. Mayor: In the crowded eld of mayoral candidates, two stand out: comptroller John Liu and public advocate Bill de Blasio. Bill de Blasio is a leader in ghting the growing inequality in our city: from abused children to unscrupulous landlords; from battling the corrosive inuence of corporate money in politics to championing paid sick leave and living wage laws. However, John Liu is the progressives progres- sive and a superb comptroller to boot. Blending integrity with action, John has fought for a shared prosperity, while exposing corruption and malfeasance in city government. He strongly feels that helping the working poor out of poverty will only strengthen the middle class, and places community priorities rst. Liu excelled as a comptroller, exposing scams like CityTime, saving us hundreds of millions of dollars. He also saved the city $1 billion dollars by renancing outstanding municipal bonds. Yes, its unfortunate that his campaign has been clouded by the misdeeds of two overzealous aides. However, while the controversy has hampered the campaign, ironically it has guaranteed us a candidate above reproach. You see, despite a thorough, three-year-long investigation with hundreds of hours of wiretaps, Liu has emerged as clean as a whistle. This Council District 1: Margaret Chin was elected in 2009 as the afford- able housing candidate. However, once in ofce, Chin ipped and has gone over to the dark side as the real estate industrys darling politician. Margaret Chin: sold out the historic South Street Seaport to the Howard Hughes Corporation sold out Greenwich Village to NYU reneged by 50% on promised affordable housing at the SPURA site on Delancey Street pushed a Chinatown & SoHo B.I.D. against the wishes of the residents and small businesses singlehandedly forced a bill through the Council to demolish a landmarked 1817 Federal townhouse at 135 Bowery, owned by overseas bank buddies who later contributed $5,900 to Chins re-election campaign endorsed by Real Estate Board governor and Independence Plaza landlord, Larry Gluck Not to worry. Chins real estate friends have rewarded her well for her services. The Real Estate Board the trade association for the citys biggest developers has created a $10 million lobbying fund, a PAC cynically called Jobs For NY, to funnel cash into Chins beleaguered campaign. The PACs special interest money is pouring in, flooding your mailboxes, telephone lines and apartment buildings with ads for Chin. These savvy real estate developers dont invest in a politician without wanting payback in return. What these investors expect for their money is for Chin to continue to hand over our community to real estate developers. Jenifer Rajkumar John Scott Paul Newell Jean Grillo District Leaders Jim Stratton Alan Schulkin Vice Presidents Adam Malitz Secretary DOWNTOWN INDEPENDENT DEMOCRATS D D Jeanne Wilcke President Sean Sweeney Treasurer Jenifer Rajkumar District Leader: In certain parts of our district Battery Park City, the Financial District and parts of the Lower East Side and SoHo there is a contest for Democratic district leader. District leaders are volunteer Democratic party ofcials, comparable to the old precinct captains, who advocate and intercede for us with govern- mental agencies, as well as ensuring that the voting is goes smoothly on election day and that Democrat candidates are elected. Current district leader Jenifer Rajkumar, besides running for the city council, is also running for re-election as district leader a post in which she has excelled receiving broad praise and accolades in reinvigorating that position. Jenifer is challenged by Robin Forst, deputy director of the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center. Working for this quasi-govern- mental agency and receiving taxpayer money, Forst is using poor judgment running for a partisan ofce. Government employees should not engage in politics. It is a conict of interest. How can Forst impartially criticize bureaucracies when she herself is a bureaucrat? We need a principled, independent, hard-working district leader: not afraid to take on city agencies and willing to be a strong advocate for our communities. We need and endorse Jenifer Rajkumar for District Leader. P R S R T .

1 0 0 1 2 Tuesday, September 10 Polls Open: 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Judicial Delegates: In the 66 th Assembly District (Deborah Glick) on the West Side, there is a contest for Judicial Delegates this year. Judicial Delegates are local residents elected to select the best State Supreme Court judges at the judicial convention, held uptown in September. It is important we have enlightened, community- based delegates, who will choose fair and independent justices for us. There is usually no contest for this unpaid, arcane position. However, this year an opportunistic group are running a slate of basically unknown individuals, many of whom do not even live in the district. Some live as far away as upper Manhattan and their agenda is unknown to us. That is troublesome. On the other hand, our Downtown Slate is com- prised of residents, selected cooperatively from a wide array of neighborhood organizations, activists who have served our community and who share our values.
