Preschool- Small Group Lesson Plan
Age group: 4-5 year olds
Anticipatory set/ How will attract their attention and get students interested in
the activity?
Invite students in a specific order, to the center table and begin talking about Dr. Seuss.

Goal: The students will be able to recognize different patterns using Dr. Seuss hats, work with
addition and some subtraction (if time) and read a simple graph. Students will also be able to
make a hypothesis and graph it, conduct the experiment (with Ms. Emily), and graph their
response to liking green eggs.
Objectives:
Teach the children to graph their interests
Teach the children how to read a simple graph
Have the children make educated hypothesis and find the results to their hypothesis.
Practice patterns.
Have Addition and subtraction , numbers from the graph.
Rationale:
This lesson is meant to tie into the theme of Dr. Seuss birthday. The reason for this lesson is to
practice patterns, have the children learn how to graph and read a graph. Also the students will
learn about what a hypothesis is, why it is done before the activity (experiment) and how it is
related to the results.

Procedure/ Step-by-Step What will you do?

1. Begin by asking the kids whos birthday is tomorrow (March 2
nd
)
2. Discuss different Dr. Seuss books and ones that we have read.
3. Discuss the graph and why we are graphing our thoughts.
4. Tell the kids about my favorite book and place my precut out hat next to it.
5. The kids will then place a pre-cut out hat from any of the Dr. Seuss stories
and place it by their favorite book.
6. Discuss why those books are their favorite and ask if they notice anything
about the graph. (hopefully patterns)
7. Have the children share the patterns they see and ask them to color a Dr.
Seuss hat using different colors and makes a pattern.
8. Talk about the book green eggs and ham, ask and chart if they think they
will like green eggs.

HOW WILL YOU DIFFERENTIATE?

Struggling Students: I will have simpler questions about the patterns on the graph
and give them two colors to make a pattern on their hat..possibly tell them where
to color.

Enrich the activity: I will ask about what type certain patterns are (AB, ABC, A) Give
them more colors to color their hat, or have them draw their own Dr. Seuss hat
they would wear with their own pattern on it. Work with addition and subtraction.
Materials:
Pre-cut out hats from different Dr. Seuss books
Pre made graphs labeled
Markers/ blank hats to color
Materials to make green eggs (different lesson)

Authentic Assessment/ What will the child do to demonstrate competence?
I will know students have achieved the goal of the assignment by discussion,
observation, and their final pattern on their Dr. Seuss hat. If there is not enough
time for the Dr. Seuss hat with their on pattern, I will know by their explanation of
the patterns on the graph/hats. I will know the students have achieved the
hypothesis goal, if they are able to graph yes or no and understand why we are
graphing it and why we will re-graph our results after tasting the green eggs.
