Issue 3 Vol. 5
August 2014

As we move along with the year we are continuing to make more training opportunities
available. We will soon be doing disaster preparation seminars. These seminars are for those
that see the dangers on the horizon, want to be prepared for them, but really are unsure how to
begin. In todays world we are facing increased frequency of extreme weather events, the
possibilities of pandemics, and terrorist attack and civil unrest caused by economic collapse.
Many people rush out and buy guns, camping gear and freeze dried food thinking they are
prepared. Most of them arent. These classes will show you how to sit down, make a realistic
assessment of you and your familys situation, make an intelligent plan on how to start
preparing, and even how to do it on a limited budget. These classes will be announced on the
website when ready and those on the mailing list will be notified.
I sincerely suggest that each of you read this months Parting Shot. And think about it.
And get mad about it. And demand that your representatives finally do something about
it. Or do a little work and help kick their butts out of office if they dont.

Ladies Only CCW
30 August 2014
This class was rescheduled from 26 July due to scheduling conflicts

2. Product review: Paracord. Its not just for skydiving!

One of the concepts of personal survival preparation is the principle of redundancy. Having one item
that will do two things and having two items that will do the same thing. Some things however have so
many multiple uses it takes a book to list them all. Paracord, or 550 cord as it is also called, is one of
those. Originally manufactured in World War Two as parachute suspension cord, the paratroopers found
that it had multiple uses. Currently, it is manufactured to a number of specifications and quality levels.
The outside of the cord is nylon with a number of smaller inner strands. Various manufacturing of
Paracord have different numbers of fine strands inside the outer sheath. These fine strands can be
removed and used for such things as sewing thread and dental floss. For the camper, survivalist or
military person, 550 cord is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Here are some of the practical uses for this
item that I gleaned from another website.
1: Tie tarp to trees
2: Lanyard to hold items (knife, keys etc.)
3: Emergency para cord wrist band,
4: emergency snare (from one of the strands inside)
5: Fishing line (from inner strands)

7: Floss with the inner strands
8: Dog lead

22: Perimeter trip wires (attach to tin cans or anything to make noise)
23: Watch strap
24: Rig up a quick bow stringer when youve forgotten yours
26: Carry gear on your back when you dont have a rucksack

62: To lash a blade to a long pole in order to use as a spear (for emergency hunting).
63: To wrap a mini Maglite handle for grip
64: For lowering equipment/packs down cliff edges.
65: Creating a snare
Trust me, there are many, many more! There are a lot of fun things you can do with it too. You can make a
world of practical items such as belts and survival bracelets. J ust Google Paracord or 550 cord and you can
spend the afternoon learning about its usefulness. J ust make sure you get some for your kit.

3. Preparation and Survival: Every Day Carry (EDC)

In the last two issues we covered the basic concepts of deciding what you are preparing
for and an overall strategy of planning a timeline with goals in your preparations. This
month we are going to start with the basics of some ideas on what items you should have
with you at all times. Thesearetheitemsyouwillhavewithyoualwaysattheoffice,

Every Day Carry (EDC) Items
There are an unlimited number of products and possibilities that you can employ to
satisfy your individual situation and tastes. The items shown are simply
representative of the types of items you should have
Your everyday carry items should encompass the following areas:

Knife/blade

This Gerber Obsidian is not only an excellent pocket knife, but has a can opener, two screwdriver
heads and a small file as well. A Swiss Army Knife is also great.

Multitool

Communications(CellPhone)

Next month we will begin with the Get Home or 72 hour bag.
Having a charged cell phone in an
emergency can be a life saver. You can
dial 911 if injured. You can be found if
lost by your signal. Many smart phones
have GPS in them. These are truly
modern miracles. The problem with
them is twofold. First you have to be in
range of a cell tower that works.
Second, you have to have a charged
battery.
The items listed here are easy to
carry and have daily as well as
emergency uses. You can cut wood
or rope. You can make light repairs.
Open cans and bottles. See in the
dark. Tie things up and tie things
down. Start a fire for warmth or
signaling and manage minor
injuries. You can call for help. And
these items are always with you.

4. Small Arms Review: 1903 Springfield

One of the most famous bolt action rifles ever adopted for military use was the U.S.
Rifle Cal .30 Model 1903 the Springfield. At the end of the 19century, the worlds
foremost militaries were adopting new rifles for the use of smokeless powder and smaller
projectiles than the black powder cartridges they had been using. This allowed smaller
projectiles to be fired at increased velocities which both flattened the trajectory and
increased the usable range. In Germany, the Mauser brothers, Peter and Paul, were
developing a series of rifle that carried their name and they were making worldwide
sales. They were 5 round charger fed bolt action rifles of superior quality and design.
Spain bought the Model 1893 model in the 7mm Mauser caliber. In 1898, the United
States adopted a Danish model rifle called the Krag-J orgenson or Krag for short, in a .30
caliber chambering called the 30-40 Krag. The rifle had to be loaded with single rounds
through a trap door on the right side of the rifle. When the United States and Spain went
to war in 1898, the superiority of the Mauser design was evident and our military wanted
something comparable. By then, Mauser had developed the famous Model 1898 Mauser
rifle and our military purchased the rights to make the design.

The end result was the Model 1903 Springfield. It went through some initial design
changes and differs from the German rifle in having a two piece firing pin, a magazine
cut off, and fine target style sights. The final chambering was called cartridge caliber .30
M-1 which was soon changed to the M-2 model with a different bullet. It is known in the
civilian world as the 30-06.
The Springfield is loaded using 5 rd. stripper clips from the top, or can be loaded with
single cartridges one at a time. The magazine cut off is a unique device. Fearing that
soldiers would unnecessarily waste ammunice, they insisted that the magazine be able to
be turned off holding the 5 rounds in reserve, while the soldier loaded and fired single
rounds. When the cut of is turnd up is says On indicating that the bolt will feeed from
the magazine. When it is in the down position it says Off and prevents the bolt from

picking up the rounds in the magazine. The rear sight on the original 1903 was a finely
made adjustable sight capable of fine target accuracy. However, this sight was difficult to
use under combat conditions, and in WW 2 when the Springfield was a substitute
standard rifle, having been replaced by the M-1 Garand, a simplified model was made
with a simple peep sight arrangement. The 03 Springfield fought its way through WW1
and as a sniper rifle through WW2, the Korean War, and to a limited degree in Vietnam.
When in good condition, the 1903 Springfield is an accurate and reliable rifle. Many
have been sporterized over the years and they make excellent hunting rifles. However,
they are becoming serious collectors items and if you have or find one in original
military condition, leave it that way! These rifle havent been made since 1945
For those who own one, or can purchase one for a reasonable price, a 1903 Springfield
makes an excellent survival rifle. The 30-06 cartridge is one of the most versatile
cartridges in North America and suitable for all large game. The variety of loads in this
caliber makes it truly a flexible choice for the survivalist.

5. Parting Shot: When is enough finally enough?

No one is more sensitive to the plight of children than I am. I raised two of them and
have 5 grandchildren and every day I thank God we are Americans and my family
doesnt have to go through the horrors I have seen children suffer in Vietnam and
Afghanistan. But this current situation of thousands of illegal children flooding across
our borders is the result of years of neglect by the tax paying public in not insisting that
our government secure our borders and evict those who are here illegally. These are not
Refugees. The countries they come from are no more dangerous than downtown
Chicago and Detroit. When are we going to make America safe for our own children?
For decades elements of both political parties, aided by activist liberal judges have
hampered any effort to control the massive illegal flood into this country for their own
selfish purposes. Liberal Democrats lick their chops at the tremendous number of new
eventual voters that will keep them in power and Republican Big Business gleefully
enjoy the prospects of almost unlimited cheap labor.
So when are the people of this country going to say enough is
finally enough? When are you Mister Middle Class Republican voter going to kick
finger in the wind RINOS like J ohn McCain to the curb? You know, the RINOS
(Republican in Name Only) who promises you one thing and then make the Big Business
Deal in the back room? But they are not worried. You keep electing them election after
election dont you? When are you Mr. Union Guy going to wake up and realize that the
Democrat you keep in office is going to retire fat and sassy while your kids are working
low paying jobs because of the competition that is willing to work for less? Assuming
there are any jobs left to get. But they are not worried. They have you in their pocket
dont they? How about you Mr. and Mrs. Minority? You and your people fought for
generations for equality and civil rights and you continue to elect the very Democrats
who undermine your childrens future with imported voters. But they are not worried
about you. They have gotten used to manipulating you for generations now havent they?
And in case anyone thinks I am anti-immigrant allow me to point out that my wife is an
immigrant from Germany who came here the legal way, and I am an immigrant to
Germany who got legal resident status there the legal way. We gained resident status in
each others countries by obeying their laws. And we are definitely not wealthy nor do
we have connections!
I welcome anyone of any religion from any country who wants to come here legally,
learn the language, wants to integrate into American culture and society, and has
skills to offer our economy. But those are the very people that we make it almost
impossible for, while we turn a blind eye to the massive illegal invasion of unskilled
labor to this country.
There is no nation on earth strong enough to take America. But
no one has to. We have simply decided to give it away.
