MISSION STATEMENT
We are a diverse, Catholic faith based community, in a
historic downtown Detroit church. Together we are
committed through prayer and service in the Jesuit
tradition, to living as men and women for others, to honor
and serve God and His people.

WE ARE SO BLESSED!!!
One year ago, the Loveley Room looked bland and boring.
Now the Loveley Room has been completely transformed with
polished original terrazzo floors, new paint, and new tables.
Surrounded by staff, Marissa Misslin, Warming Center
Director, cuts the ribbon signifying the start of a new era for St.
Catherine Chapel and how SSPP serves the community.

The multi-purpose room pictured here is used
for guests to have a place to rest off the floor on
cots. Keeping in mind the parishioners and
others who use this space, it was designed to
also seat approximately 25 people, if needed.
Across the hallway are four new bathrooms,
three new showers and a janitors closet. A new
Warming Center office is located next to the
multi-purpose room, close to the entrance.
No More sleeping in chairs or on a hard cold marble floor in the
vestibule of the church.

The Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit Warming Center is an Ignatian parish ministry of people in mutual service
to and with our neighbors; many of whom live on the street, and whose realities include addiction, grief,
shame, fear, impoverishment and/or mental impairment.

KEY POINTS

In writing the newsletter each month, I sometimes
feel I am repeating myself. It is just so true that there
are certain key points that are essential in a ministry
such as ours.

SERVICE: The first and most valued. The good
works this ministry does for others without
consideration of self or reward. That is, of course, are
mission, to serve: people in mutual service to and
with our neighbors, many of whom live on the street.

GRATITUDE: We have so much to be grateful for,
not for ourselves, but for those whom we care for and
serve. We are grateful for this amazing new space in
which to invite others in that they may be served and
appreciated for who the really are - not just who they
are often prejudicially seen as. We are grateful to all
the supporters we recognized at the Grand Opening in
June for making this new day, this new space,
possible. We are grateful for all our fantastic
volunteers who work so hard to make all this happen.
As well, our Warming Center Guests have expressed
their gratitude in many, many ways and have been so
patient with us as we get everything up and running at
an optimal level.

HOPE: I am hoping in the future to share these expressions with you. So, of course, I also have to again invite you to
come and be a part of it yourself. For our hope is found in volunteers, donors and prayers.

So I am not repeating myself, I am repeating the heart of our mission, the soul of it, in as many ways as it is made
manifest for our guests and for the greater glory of God!

tables eating and watching television. The hallway under the former choir
loft has 4 bathrooms, 2 shaving sinks, and 3 showers. Guests are invited to
rest in the multi-purpose room adjacent to the coffee station at the end of the
hall. The other end of the room (not pictured) has a buffet right outside the
new commercial kitchen. Our laundry services are also improved to now
accommodate 4 washers and 4 dryers.

What a way to begin the Summer Season! We are very grateful for
the wonderful spirit of service and generosity we witnessed by the
staff, faculty and students of our neighbor, University of Detroit
Mercy School of Law. They provide a wonderful summer meal for our homeless guests of hot dogs, chips, fruit,
cookies, lemonade and more in the courtyard between our buildings. And as if that wasnt enough, they also presented
the Warming Center with a tremendous gift. Phyllis L. Crocker, Dean
of the School of Law, affirmed UDM Laws commitment to serving
others with basket upon basket of much needed supplies! They truly
are showing that the Mercy in their name is more than just a word
for them, but an essential part of their work. We wanted to fill your
shelves., said Amy Smith, Associate Dean for Operations. Thank
you for joining in our mission of service to the homeless of Detroit.
We look forward to a continued relationship of mutual service.
THANK YOU, UDM LAW!
