Firstly, I want to say congratulations. Youve taken
the action to download my fundamentals guide. In the
information world, its a lot easier to continue reading,
watching and listening to various training modules
without ever doing anything with that knowledge.
But not you, youre an action taker.
Over the past 5 years weve all seen a huge push for
personal trainers. Basically anyone who liked going to
the gym decided they would now do this for a living.
This has lead to an oversupply of trainersbut how
many can we truly trust? How many are in the game
to help clients achieve results, not just take someones
money?
My honest estimate is 5%.
Dramatically low. But hopefully, youre a part of that 5%
and are ready to take the next step into online training.
Or maybe you already conduct online training but want
to hone your skills and develop new systems to make
it more efcient.
Either way, by committing the time to read this guide
you are showing me that you are serious about making
this work, so for that, well done.
Now lets get started.
What are we going to learn?
This guide will teach you the
fundamentals of online training.
It includes the four major steps to
becoming an online trainer and can
help you get started immediately.
It should also be noted that this is
simply an introduction to the world of
online training. Anyone who sells you
a complete guide to online training is
most likely taking you for a ride. The
internet is continuously changing,
therefore to write a complete guide
would be redundant as soon as it was
created.
A truly dynamic environment is only
created through responsive, frequently
updated information and current
resources (which you will learn about
throughout this document).
It is recommended, although not
essential, that you do have experience
with training clients in person to fully
grasp the concepts and also have
evidence of results to provide to
potential clients.
Training clients online is an excellent way
to leverage your time by working from
the comfort of your own home. Best of
all there are no locational boundaries,
meaning you can have clients from
literally all around the world.
Unfortunately, many trainers fall into
the trap of thinking this is less work.
This is not necessarily true. Unless you
have the right systems in place, you
will most likely fnd yourself chasing
your own tail. My goal is to help you
discover those systems and maximise
your beneft.

Alright, we are going to start training clients online. Maybe youve had success as a
personal trainer at your local gym but want to move operations online, or maybe
youre tired of paying the gym owner 50% of your wage for rent? Either way youve
made the right decision. Online training is the way of the future for many personal
trainers and we are going to see huge growth in this area over the coming years. Get
on top of things now before the market place becomes saturated.
The frst and most essential item in all of this training, is to have a current and
frequently updated website. Social media is great, but nothing will take over the level
of control that a website of your very own can provide. We speak about the setup of
this in the sections below.
Your website
Everything you do from this point on should have the goal of driving people to your
website. This should be the central point for all of your content and where everything
needs to be directed. Facebook Posts, Tweets and YouTube Video Links will all be sent
directly to your website.
All of the websites I have built and manage (over 30 diferent sites) run on Wordpress.
I highly recommend you use Wordpress for building and maintaining your site. For
the purposes of brevity, Im not going too far into why I love Wordpress, but the short
of it is that it makes websites EXTREMELY easy to use and is now the worlds most
common way to build websites for small/medium businesses.

to help you understand and see exactly how certain things are
done. For this particular situation, I have recorded a 4 minute
video to show you step by step how to get your Wordpress
blog up and running with Bluehost.

Before you read the below section I want to ofer you some simple but efective
advice to keep in mind:

Stage 1
The frst thing you will want to do is put a new menu item in the top menu called
Online Training. This will help give you online services as much exposure as possible
when people frst hit your site.
This can either be a whole menu item, or a sub menu item as a part of the Services
menu item if you have it. I recommend the frst one for increased visibility.
I would also consider putting either a side banner on your site explaining you ofer
these services, or include this somewhere on the front page. Remember, you want all
the exposure you can get.
Stage 2:
Next on your newly created Online Training page you will want to have well written
information for the potential clients to read and relate to.
This is the number 1 place where nearly ALL trainers to wrong. Most write about how
good of a trainer they are, concentrating on what services they can sell you and what
qualifcations they have. It is all about THEM.
Wrong
Instead, shift your mindset from a basic service provider to a problem solver. In
simple terms, write about the benefts they will see from having you as their trainer.
For example, will they feel better naked and feel more attractive to the opposite sex?
Or will they jump higher and impress their friends next time theyre all playing sport
together?
Remember, the goal is to outline the experience and benefts they will gain from
following your guidance and training.

Stage 3:
Next, we need to input your testimonials and before & after photos. We call this,
social proof.
To help explain social proof a little better, let me give you an example:
You head out for dinner and see 2 new restaurants that have opened up side by side.
You drive past and see one with a long line of people out the front, the other has
two people in it. Which do you immediately assume has better food? The one with
the huge line of course. This is the world we live in. Most people are sheep and will
follow others if it seems like a good idea.
Its no diferent with personal training. Your website is the restaurant and the
testimonials/before and afters are your line. Make sure your line is long!
The testimonials you list should be from real people with real photos. Anyone can
make up a testimonial, but rarely will they get away with it long term and quite often
theyre blatantly obvious. If possible, ask for a video review. These can be twice as
powerful as text based reviews.
Here is the pecking order:
Text Review with First Name 1 point.
Text Review with First Name + Picture 2 points.
Text Review with Full Name + Picture + Phone
Number
3 points.
Video Review with Full Name + Phone Number 4 points!
Length: Quite honestly, people do not have the time to read more than 3-4 lines in a
testimonial. Try to provide as many as possible. Ask your current clients for assistance.

Tip
Do yourself a favour and install Google Analytics. Your website guy
should be able to install this in minutes, if you are part of The Prophets
we have video tutorials on exactly how to do this. This is going to be
extremely valuable to see increases in your traffc and gauge what is
and isnt working.
These are the basic steps to get your PT website up and running. However, there are
several other steps to the set up that can be addressed to maximise the beneft and
reach of your services.
These include:
Setting up an email lead generation system to capture potential clients
(Every visitor to your website could potentially be a client. If not now, then
later on. Use email marketing to stay in touch. Dont let them get away.)
Website Copywriting examples A showcase of persuasive writing content
that makes people want to sign up with you immediately.
Appropriate Documentation Set up - The days of sending clients diets and
programs by email are gone. Time to get serious and set up some professional
looking templates.
Stage 4:
Hopefully you have a few photos from clients (or are going to start taking them as
of tomorrow for your new online training page). This is going to visually show the
results that you have helped clients achieve and instill confdence in their minds that
youre the right trainer for them.

Optimising your website for SEO - There are still ways to get free trafc from
Google. Take advantage while you still can.
All of the above are going to be addressed when you become part of The Prophets
which is basically, for lack of a better phrase, this book on steroids.

So youve got the skills to train your clients and now youve got the website all up a
running. Now its time to drive some trafc there and convert that trafc into leads!
This is now our number 1 priority.
There are several ways to do this. Both paid and unpaid. Within the scope of this
document we investigate 2 of each which I consider the most vital.
UNPAID METHOD 1: BLOG POSTING
The frst step to growing an audience on your site is by posting relevant and useful
information. Give people a reason to pay a visit to your site. Dedicate 30 minutes
each day to writing and developing new content for your site. Youd be surprised once
you get into the habit, just how easily the content will fow.

Both Charles Poliquin and I are regular bloggers who understand that in order to be
seen as the expert, you need to be putting regular and consistent content out.
UNPAID METHOD 2: ORGANIC FACEBOOK
Unfortunately as Facebook is being held accountable to their shareholders, we have
seen frequent algorithm changes (in simple terms, were having less of an impact on
our followers). However, with the right efort, we can increase this impact, therefore
increasing likes, which increases news feed visibility.
The Promotion
Follow these 3 simple rules and youre ahead of 95% of Facebook.
1. Keep descriptions short and to the point
2. Use your logo/website in all images that you own (For a guide on properly
branding your business please see: Branding Part 1 and Part 2)
3. Always include a link or some way to get the audience to your site.

PAID METHOD 1: GOOGLE ADWORDS CAMPAIGN
Everyday potential clients are searching for online personal trainers. The good news
is location is not a problem, so you can train anyone from anywhere. The bad news
is that other trainers from around the globe can also ofer their services. This should
be motivation for you to make your services the most appealing they can be.
Set up a Google Adwords campaign and invest into some trafc. Here is a very basic
diagram on how it can work:

Remember as long as the content on your site is well branded and full of good
information, your conversions from visitors to enquiries should be respectable.
PAID METHOD 2: FACEBOOK ADS
Mentioned in the above section, Facebook can be a terrifc form of free trafc. What
people are now also realising, is the amplifed power of paid Facebook advertising.
The advantage Facebook has over Google, is extremely detailed information on exact
people and the way this information is interconnected.
For example: Facebook knows that I am 26 years old, went to University in Bendigo
and am friends with Sean, Aaron and Ben. It knows I enjoy ftness because I have
tagged myself into the gym before, it knows what kind of food I eat because of the
restaurants I visit. In fact, there is not much that Facebook wouldnt know about
me. It is the most powerful (personalised) information tool that exists today. Start
utilising this power to spread your brand.
Now that you are starting to get some eyeballs on your site,
you can periodically let the world know that you train clients
online. I recommend a 1:14 ratio. This means for every 14 pieces
of useful content, you are allowed to promote/sell something.
In this case it will be your online personal training services.

Setting up a simple $5 per day Facebook ad can help get eyes on your site. You can
become very targeted and focus on liked activities, their age, where they are located,
which gender they are, and even target those who like your competitors pages. Once
the eyes are on your site, you let all the hard work from stage 1 to come into efect
and sell your services to this person.
This is called a conversion. The higher your conversion rate, the more clients you will
have, the more online clients you can get, the more money you can ultimately make.
The sky is the limit.

Okay, so what do you do once you have client enquiries and signups?
Firstly we will need to decide which prospects are best suited to our training style.
One big mistake trainers make, is to try and market their services towards EVERYONE.
To excel you need to stand for something. (I just like helping people is not a valid
answer either.)
Get specifc with your training categories and pick 2-3.
Below are some basic examples:
14-18 Year old male athletes at school
25-35 Year old overweight females
45-60 Year old Corporate ftness
From the above, you can now begin selecting the clients you wish to work with.
Cant decide what your true passion is or who to train?

BUT WHAT EXACTLY ARE THEY GOING TO GET, AND HOW
MUCH SHOULD YOU BE CHARGING?
What to include in a program
Online training is all about the ability to leverage your time. It is for this reason you
will have varying packages. Each of these will slowly increase in price as they include
more personalised and time consuming tasks.
For example, you may have a Bronze, Silver or a Gold package.

Bronze
Clients will have access to a few of your online package tools such as preset programs
(for their body type and demographic), once a month you will ofer a skype call with
them and include 48 hour email response time.
Silver
This might be a more personalised diet, personalised workout plan for their goals,
a weekly skype call, access to a private Facebook group and 24 hour email support.
Gold
Gold will be the highest package you ofer. It will include everything from silver, but
include more of your time, more of your tools and make their experience even better.
VIP Gold Package
Another ace up our sleeves is to ofer something super exclusive. Something the
regular folk dont get access to. This will be above and beyond anything you ofer and
be used as a wild card when you really fnd a client you are compatible with.

This is a terrifc start and will give you a good base to learn about your new client. To
take it to the next level though we need more.
The Prophet members all have access to a professional 3 page questionnaire which
goes much deeper than the above and asks everything you will need to know right
from the start.
TRACKING
One argument by old school trainers (who are most likely scared to embrace the new
online training world we live in) have is that you cannot adequately track a clients
progress unless you see them in person.
With the current technology this is just not the case. We have a myriad of tools to help
see and analyse their progress. Skype, Digital Photography and Recorded YouTube
videos can help assess body fat levels, increased muscle mass or check a clients
form.
There are also various ways to track progress in the weight room and body
measurements including excel formula documents and online software programs.
All of which are elaborated and will be available for download within The Prophets.
PAYMENTS
The industry standard payment is via Paypal, which I love. It is quick, easy, and comes
with an invoicing feature where you can have Paypal automatically send a recurring
invoice to a client.
Plus its all trackable. As we move further into the future, it will become more and
more difcult to run a business on cash only (we all know trainers are notorious for
this) plus it makes it super easy when clients dispute if theyve paid for a session or
not as its all in the records.

COMMUNICATION
Staying in communication with your clients is crucial, especially when you dont see
them multiple times per week like a regular client.
Modern day technology makes it extremely easy to make this happen.
Skype
Email
Phone Calls
SMS
YouTube
These are all extremely valuable ways of staying connected to your clients.
Along with increased connectivity, comes the risk of always being connected. I am a
victim of overworking and by nature most personal trainers are too. Which is why it
is very important to set realistic guidelines from the start of the engagement. These
should explain how much contact they will actually get with you one on one and the
acceptable times to call.

The fnal step I will mention within this guide is to create your private knowledgebase.
This is a unique selection of resources only available to your current online clients.
The exclusivity of the group makes others want to become part of it, and those on
the inside, feel special. Win-Win.
However, what exactly is inside this knowledge base?
Im going to briefy explain the top 4 examples of what you might like to include.
1. Private Facebook Group
Facebook groups are massive right now. I am a part of a few and becoming part of
The Prophets instantly gives you access to a close community of personal trainers
from around the globe to network with and discuss current market trends.
Most likely your clients will be on Facebook anyway, why not give them a place to
hangout. They will connect with each other, converse, post useful links, and also ask/
answer questions.
The Knowledge base
Dont fall into the trap of thinking you will never have to be
active in the group. One group I was in (which had around
1000 members) was initially very active with questions but
not with the creators answers. We never saw him. Needless
to say, the group fzzled out after 3 months of inactivity. Make
sure this doesnt happen to your business.

2. Membership Forum
Many argue that private forums are dead. I disagree. Forums provide a great
community, all with one very advantageous feature. It is on your own platform. You
can dictate the rules.
A worrying problem with Facebook is who knows what changes they will make in the
future. They can change and make new rules as they wish. You can protect yourself
from this by building a tribe on your own platform.

Start of the party by inviting a few regular ofine clients to join the forum. Ask them
to create and start discussing common questions. This helps with initial engagement
and increase the appeal for newer members who will be less likely to feel shy.
3. Youtube Video Database
Yes there is an over-supply of How To videos on YouTube, but I am a big believer of
adding a personal touch. Plus there might be certain ways that you like your clients
to perform their exercises. My advice is to get the video camera/HD phone out and
record as many videos as you can. Best of all, they can be used at any time.
Not only could you post these how to videos, but dont be afraid of posting more
content such as motivational thoughts, full workout routines, cooking demonstrations
and more. Video is an excellent way to connect with your clients on what can feel like
a one on one level. Use this to your advantage.
4. The shopping List
One area many clients fail, is with their nutrition. Quite often these mistakes stem
from the foods in their cupboard. One piece of information you can provide your
online clients is a list of items to buy from the grocery store, and another list of items
to avoid (most of the time).
Simple but efective.
The tools and resources you provide to your clients are completely personal. This
is only a small selection of what we can ofer. The number one thing we want to
continue to do though is provide results for the client. So the more knowledge they
have, the easier it will be for them. (We hope!)
OK so those are the fundamentals. You should have enough information from the
above to start efectively training your clients online.
But for those who really want to excel, I have developed an online community of
