Design: Unity & Balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical)

Unity and balance are two principles of design. This assignment gives you experience creating compositions using
these principles and white space.

Unity all elements look like they belong together.

Balance - an equal distribution of weight or sense of equilibrium. Balance can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

White space - is the background of the design and is also called negative space or empty space. It helps to lead the
viewer between the elements on the page. Look at the white space as you arrange the photographs on the page and
make sure the white (negative) space is balanced with photographs (positive space).

You will create two collages with each collage containing 5 9 photographs. One collage must illustrate
symmetrical balance and the second collage must illustrate asymmetrical balance. Look at the examples before
you begin.

Each composition will be a unified subject. For example, you may choose to create a collage that is made up of all
hands like one of the examples. You will need to choose a subject based on the photographs you can find. Each
composition must be a different subject.

Use the Photoshop selection methods youve learned in class to cut out portions of existing photographs. Arrange
the selections into a balanced composition.

The image size will be 8 x 10, 200 ppi. The selections must be professional looking; no chain saw edges!
