FERRAGOSTO
What is Ferragosto? In the simplest terms,
Ferragosto is a holiday that takes place on 15th of
August every year in Italy. It is, in fact, probably the
most popular holiday in Italy other than Christmas
day. Ferragosto coincides with Assumption Day, the
principal feast of the Virgin Mary, commemorating
the day of the assumption of her body into heaven.
It also stems from the ancient harvest festivals Feriae
Augusti (Festivals of Augustus), from which its name
Ferragosto is derived. During these celebrations,
horse races were organized across the Roman Empire
and this tradition remains alive today with the Palio
of Sienna, Indeed the name Palio comes from the
pallium, a piece of cloth that was the prize given to
winners of the horse races in ancient Rome.
Marking the end of hard labor in the elds,
Ferragosto was celebrated with the best of food, wine
and music. We wont be racing horses, but we will
be celebrating summer with a Hawaiian shirt contest
on Friday, August 15th, at Cena. A prize will be
awarded to the best and / or craziest Hawaiian shirt.
You can make your reservation here on line, or call
the Club at (972) 931-9167.

PRESIDENTS LETTER
Dear Members,
With the summertime slowness, the Club is experiencing a severe cash
ow problem and it needs your immediate help.
We need to pass the hat to help us bridge the current shortages and
sustain the Club.
We have enjoyed beautiful dinners with our Guest Chef program and
other activities are planned to generate proceeds. We continue to focus
on expansion of rental revenue, additional fundraising, cost reduction and
various partnerships to lower our breakeven point. These efforts will not
show immediate results and solve our immediate problem - lack of funds.
We need time and additional funding to allow these actions to take
effect.
Therefore, we are asking for donations, all of which are tax-deductible.
We are asking each member to donate a minimum of $100.00. Of
course, additional amounts would be helpful. This injection of cash
would give us time to effect the actions listed above. You can forward
your donations to the Clubs address or by clicking here, to make a
donation on-line.
Time is our enemy and we need you to respond immediately....we need
your help now.
Thank You

BOCCE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
On June 8, ICD members competed for The 2013 Anthony Mungioli
Memorial Club Championship. Rain again threatened to postpone the
tournament however players enjoyed a great day of bocce followed by
pranzo at the ICD. Many exciting matches resulted in the same nals as
the 2012 championship with Charles Castellano & Everett Bollerman
placing second and Luigi & Philip Mungioli winning the tournament
for the second time.
The date for the 2014 Championship has been set for October 26, 2014
so mark your calendar. Until then, come out and play bocce every other
Tuesday evening at Bent Tree CC (weather permitting). From expert to
beginner, come play bocce on beautiful courts that are swept, watered,
rolled, and lit for play well into the night.
If you would like more information to participate, check the schedule in
your ICD weekly ClubMail or contact bocce coordinator Nick Bonvino

well see you on the Bocce Court!
WESTFEST 2014
Remember the little town of West on I-35 as you head south toward
Waco? It celebrates its Czech heritage every year on Labor Day
weekend. A year ago the town suffered a terrible tragedy when the
fertilizer plant exploded which caused human suffering and loss. The
town did not give up but is rebuilding and continues the celebration on
this coming Labor Day weekend, August 30 and 31. There are many
dance groups of many heritages who perform. Our I Colori Italiani and
I Piccoli Colori used to perform at this event but it has been many years
since they have. This year we have been invited and will perform on
Sunday, August 31 at 3 p.m.
Not only are there dances from many cultures, but also food booths
with Czech specialties, such as Kolaches. There will also be Polka bands
for everyone to enjoy and POLKA. Usually the popular band Brave
Combo is one of the bands playing for everyones dancing pleasure.
There is a parking and admission fee that is nominal and well worth the
trip south.
We hope to see many of the Italian Club members on August 31in West.
For more information call Maria Chobany at 972-235-4920 or Carrie
Harris at 972-242-8283.

HUNGER BUSTERS VOLUNTEERING TO RESUME ON
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27
Hard to believe that summer is winding down and school and football
will be starting again in just a few more weeks. And with school
resuming the end of this month so will our volunteers stint at Hunger
Busters begin in August on the fourth Wednesday, August 27.
For those of you who are not familiar with our Hunger Buster charitable
outreach, our members volunteer on the rst Monday and fourth
Wednesday of each month during the school year preparing meals to be
taken home as their third meal of the day by food insecure children at a
number schools of the Dallas Independent School District. The schools
provide breakfast and lunch to the students.
Our volunteers who start at 10 a.m. at the Hunger Busters kitchen
facility will assemble and bag upwards of 700 sandwiches and pack them
into brown bags along with, usually, a piece of fruit, a pudding cup and
a dessert item. All this is accomplished by our volunteers no later than
12:30 p.m. After the meals are packed, Hunger Buster personnel deliver
them to the schools for distribution to the children.
We have two crews of volunteers: a rst Monday crew and a fourth
Wednesday crew. If you can accommodate one of those days to your
schedule, we would greatly appreciate your help. Three hours once a
month isnt too much to ask to help feed a hungry child. Please contact
me to let me know youll help.

MEMBER NEWS
Our congratulations and warmest best wishes go to Pedro and Gina
Lecca on celebrating their fty-rst wedding anniversary last July 6. We
will have to ask Pedro and Gina to divulge the secret to a long and happy
marriage.
Kudos to Bianca Lucia, daughter of Al Tamez and Marguerite Buccino,
upon her graduation from Chicago University on June 14 with a BA
in biology and general honors. After completing an internship at an
addiction treatment outpatient facility she will be seeking employment
in Texas. Bianca was the recipient of a small, but most appreciated,
scholarship from NIAF.
DID YOU KNOW?
that Elena Lucrezia Cornaro, born in Venice in 1646, was the rst
woman in history to be awarded a university degree? Although her
studies were in theology, the degree conferred upon her by the University
of Padua in 1668 was in philosophy. The cardinal bishop of Padua,
whose consent was required for any degree to be conferred in theology,
refused to allow the university to confer one upon a woman saying
that women were inferior and not capable of deep reection and Holy
Scripture justied his decision. Nonetheless over thirty thousand people
attended the ceremony in the Cathedral in Padua awarding her the
degree in philosophy.
that contrary to urban legend Enrico Caruso did not have 16 brothers
(none of whom survived infancy) and three sisters? He actually was the
third of seven children and one of only three to survive infancy. Also,
prior to marrying New York socialite Dorothy Park Benjamin in 1918
who bore him a daughter, Caruso was romantically involved with Italian
soprano Ada Giachetti from 1897 to 1908 who, though already married,
bore Caruso four sons.
that if you want a kiss from a sweet young thing in Valle dAosta you
ask her for a potin? And if she is Sicilian its a vasata that you would
crave. And of course in non-dialectic Italian its bacio.

FESTIVAL OF NATIONS CELEBRATING ITALY
This past July 19th the William T. Cozby Public Library in Coppell
presented the Culture of Italy for residents of the city. It was from 2
pm to 3:30 pm and members of the Italian Club of Dallas, specically
I Colori Italiani members, provided their time, artifacts and pictures
featuring Italian Culture.
We had Carnevale masks, Italian Dolls, two hand made costumes
depicting the provinces of Molise and Friuli. These had been made by
a deceased member of the dance group, Nelly Missana Pettersen. Also
Laura Cocharo Buchanan, a former member, demonstrated how Italian
Bobbin Lace is made. The children who came made mosaic tiles from
colorful cut up pieces of construction paper glued down on cardboard
to resemble the real thing. Marguerite Buccino assisted the children
with this endeavor. A travel lm of Italy provided by Fred Naparano ran
during the exhibition. Our Childrens group, I Piccoli Colori performed
a variety of dances for all to enjoy. They were Nicole and Stephanie
Farias, Elizabeth Bushey, Alyssa Calo, and Shanna Miletta. Tidbits
of Italian cuisine were provided by Melissa Partain and enjoyed by all.
Maria Miletta and Andrew Chobany, Carrie Pollinzi Harris are grateful
to Jennifer Franz at the Library who contacted us and made it possible
for us to showcase Italy and Italian Culture to the general public.
A SOUTHERN ITALIAN BEAUTY: THE TOWN OF BARI
I think Bari is one of the most beautiful
cities of Apulia. Its citizens are so aware of
it that they have a common say: if Milan
had the sea it would be a little Bari
Its a medium-sized city with about
350,000 inhabitants and offers many
interesting things to see.
First of all, there is the old city, with its
maze of narrow streets, ancient churches,
palaces and very beautiful monuments
like the Norman-Swabian castle, the
Cathedral and the Basilica of Saint
Nicholas, both in Romanesque style,
of extraordinarily simple beauty and a
dazzling white color. The atmosphere
in the old town is very special: the maze
of narrow streets is still virtually intact
from the Middle Ages to the present day
and, combined with the smell of the sea,
it seems you are able to relive that period
of history walking through the alleys and
small squares.
Outside the old town is the so-called
Murat village, founded in the early 19th
century and adorned with beautiful
buildings in the Art Nouveau style at the
beginning of the 20th century. Here you
will nd the main shopping streets and it
is nice to take a walk among wide roads
lled with shops. The waterfront is of
extraordinary beauty thanks to the view
it offers of the old town. A little on the
outskirts, near the Polytechnic is also the
Russian church in Bari, a strange building
that gives an oriental touch to the city.
Besides the monuments, Bari is famous for
its gastronomy: a part of the most famous
dishes, it is worth tasting some typical
products that are eaten as a snack cake like
focaccia barese (a local type of pizza) and
the panzerotti (sort of a calzone) which are real delights!
Getting to Bari is very simple, as there is an airport connected with many
Italian and European cities with low cost ights and the railway station,
where trains stop rather frequently like the Frecciabianca (white arrow)
that connects Milan to Lecce, another town south of Bari.
The best time to visit Bari is in the spring, before it gets too hot.
However, summer is better if you want to enjoy the nightlife along the
coastline and to take advantage of the beaches during the day.
Bari is a city where you can nd all the conveniences of a city and the
tranquility of the sea and it takes a whole day to visit and enjoy it. If
you also want to check the beautiful surroundings you must provide
additional days because ther are many beautiful places nearby. One of
them is Polignano a Mare, a fabulous place and the city of Domenico
Modugno, the singer of Volare! It is a place by the blue sea contrasted
by white rocks that will leave you enchanted.
Take a trip to Bari and Polignano: you will love it!
