th
Grade Earth
Space Science Class

Formation of the Solar System- The solar system
formed from a collapse of an interstellar cloud. Explain
how the solar system formed. Describe early concepts of
the structure of the solar system. Describe how our
current knowledge of the solar system developed. Relate
gravity to the motion of the objects in the solar system.
Estimated Duration:
Three class periods.

Pre-Assessment:
Students will be introduced to the different proposed
theories of the formation of the solar system and to their
lesson. Students work on a Source Analysis and analyze the
available information related to the sizes of different
asteroids, satellites, and planets, in order to understand the
vastness of the solar system.

Blooms Taxonomy
Higher Order Thinking Skills, Remembering, Identifying,
Understanding, Group Discussion, Analyze, Define,
Explain, Describe.

Post-Assessment:
Students will work on a summative assessment final test,
which will include all the information learned in class after
completing the class assignments.

Scoring Guidelines:
Students will be given a short test to assess their
understanding about the lesson, it will include vocabulary
questions, multiple choice questions, extended response
questions, and questions that require the use of pictographs
and graphs.
Each question is worth one point except the extended
response questions they will be worth 2 points. 2 Point
questions will be awarded based on the correct answer 1
point, and explanation 1 point.

Instructional Procedures:
Activity 1- Students are introduced, and asked about the
different theories that are proposed about the formation of
the solar system a discussion will be opened.
Activity 2- Students watch a 3 minute short video about the
solar system.
Activity 3- Students are given charts with the physical data
of the planets and are asked to compare the size of the
planets.
Activity 4- Students are introduced to the lesson and the
vocabulary words. Students read and define the vocabulary
words and answer the end of the section 5 questions.
Activity 5-Students find information about the 10 largest
asteroids, including their estimated size and masses, orbital
periods, and semi major axes. Students compare the
asteroids to planets and to satellites such as the Moon. Also
students add the masses of the ten asteroids and compare
the result with the mass of Earth. Students should find even
the largest asteroids are smaller than the Moon, and the total
mass of the top ten asteroids is tiny compared with the mass
of Earth.
Activity 6- Final summative test.

Differentiated Instructional Support:
Students with special education needs will have more time
to work on the assignment, they will be given more help
with their work.

Homework Options and Home Connections:
Students will have to do the reading, vocabulary definitions,
end of section questions, data analysis sheet and asteroid
research in class. If the assignment is not finished by the
end of the week due to setbacks it will be the students
responsibility to finish the assignment at home.

Interdisciplinary Connections:
This lesson can extend to Language Arts, Mathematics,
Biology, Technology, Astrology, and Astronomy.

Materials and Resources:
For teachers Book, paper, writing utensils, computer
youtube video, data chart, library books
data chart.
For students Book, paper, writing utensils, computer
youtube video, data chart, library books
data chart.

Key Vocabulary
Planetesimal, retrograde motion, ellipse, astronomical unit,

Technology Connections
Students can learn additional information related to this
topic by completing the A+lesson Introduction to Earth
Space Science, The Sun, The Moon.
