The Lady or the Tiger? A Famous Logic Puzzle
$ere is a well2known conundrum that was quite contro3ersial in its da4. A lot of
mathematicians couldn5t e3en get the answer right6 It looks decepti3el4 simple...
The Lady or the Tiger
A 4oung prince and princess had fallen in lo3e7 8ut the girl5s father7 a 8itter old "ing7 opposed
the marriage. So the "ing contri3ed to lure the #rince into a trap. In front of his entire !ourt
9 no8les7 clerg47 :esters and e3en sculler42maids 9 he challenged the #rince to pro3e his
lo3e in a highl4 unusual and dangerous game.
;The #rincess7; said the "ing7 ;is 8ehind one of these three doors I ha3e placed in front of
4ou. ehind the other two are hungr4 tigers who will most certainl4 eat 4ou for dinner. If 4ou
pro3e 4our lo3e 84 picking the correct door7 4ou ma4 marr4 m4 daughter6;
;And :ust to demonstrate that I5m not a 8itter old man7; said the "ing <who secretl4 suspected
that5s e=actl4 what e3er4one thought of him>7 ;I will help 4ou. &nce 4ou make 4our choice7
8ut 8efore 4ou open the door7 I will show 4ou a tiger 8ehind one of the other doors. And
then7; intoned the "ing magnanimousl47 ;4ou ma4 pick again6;
The Prince knew that if he walked away he would likely be banished in shame from the
Kingdom forever."
The court 8roke out into polite and dutiful applause. The "ing smiled7 con3inced that the
#rince would not 8e man enough to take the challenge7 e3en with the "ing5s help.
Now the #rince knew that if he walked awa4 he would likel4 8e 8anished in shame from the
"ingdom fore3er7 ne3er to see his lo3e again. This he could not 8ear. And he was also a 3er4
cle3er #rince. So he swallowed hard7 uttered a short pra4er for luck7 and then picked a door at
random.
;I choose this door7; said the prince in his deep7 manl4 3oice7 as he walked o3er to one of the
doors.
;,ait6; commanded the "ing in surprise. ;I am as good as m4 word. Now I will show 4ou a
tiger. Guards6 %e3eal a tiger from 8ehind one of the two remaining doors6;
Three of the "ings guards cautiousl4 walked o3er to one of the other doors7 opened it a crack7
and then quick as the4 could slammed it shut. A huge hungr4 tiger had 8een crouching right
8ehind it6 The door shook as the tiger leaped up against it.
;Now7; said the "ing7 ;Make 4our choice6; And7 glancing to his court7 he added7 ;)nless of
course 4ou wish to gi3e up now and walk awa4...;
What Are the Prince's hances?
The prince is now left with two doors. ehind one of them is a tiger7 and 8ehind the other is
the #rincess. Should he stick with the original door he picked7 or open the other one? &r does
it e3en matter? And what are his chances of li3ing happil4 e3er after with the #rincess?
!int" E3en though he has two doors left7 his chances are actuall4 #$T @AB@A.
