MICHAEL ROSE The Slinging Aces Cornhole Tournament is new to the Ohio State Fair this year! The tournament will consist of a doubles tournament and will be played double-elimination style. The tournament is open to all players and will take place today at the Buckeye Sports Center. Registration and warm-up is from 4 pm to 5 pm and the tournament will offcially start at 5:30 pm. Famous for Bahama Mamas and cream puffs, Schmidts is the oldest continuous restaurant participating at the Fair. Over the past 100 years, Schmidts has sold more than 860,000 cream puffs, 1,050,000 sausages, 200,000 frankfurters and 260,000 pounds of sauerkraut. George Schmidt, the head of fve generations of Schmidts, was also inducted posthumously into the Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame yesterday for his lifelong dedication to the Fair. Beginning in 1932 until his passing in April 2013, Schmidt was involved with the family business. A supporter of the Fairs youth programs, he purchased many swine, horticulture and agriculture grand prizes. Schmidt was also known for his love of the All-Ohio State Fair Band, which circled around the Schmidt stand and played Happy Birthday for him every year from age 10 to 91. The band continues this tradition by playing a birthday tribute to Georges son, John Schmidt, and will perform their annual serenade on July 30 at 10:30 am at the Kidddieland Schmidts location. Kasich will be visiting the Fair today! The day will spotlight events focused on the First Ladys commitment to health and wellness. At the Natural Resources Park from 11 am to noon, the First Lady will hold a feld day type program that will allow youth ages 18 and younger to participate in various physical and nature education activities. The Million Hearts Campaign will also be in Central Park from 10 am to 2 pm for First Ladys Day. Fairgoers can check their blood pressure, BMI and stress levels at the Million Hearts Campaign tents at this event. Join Mrs. Kasich and the Million Hearts Campaign to learn what you can do to improve your numbers after the Fair and help prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by 2016. Starting at 1 pm, Mrs. Kasich will join chefs in the Taste of Ohio Caf presented by Ohio Magazine for a healthy cooking demonsration. They will be making ratatouille and chicken. The group brought home the CMA award for New Artist of the Year in 2008.
