Ferskir vindar Gari
Fresh Winds in Garur was a bold idea that developed into an adventure; a workshop
of creativity where the people by the ocean and participants from many countries have turned
the dream into reality. Where before the fsh was treated now Fresh Winds have created
a workshop; the originality of the artists and the values of the community determine the way
forward. Everybody participates, both the visitors and the inhabitants, young and old.
From the very beginning I was inspired by this vision and have enjoyed seeing the Fresh Winds
in Garur grow into an impressive success.

Curator and Director
The Vastness was this years theme at Fresh Winds, now held
for the third time in Garur from Dec 21 2013- Jan 16 2014,
with the artists making a joyful and creative invasion into
the community.
The emphasis this time around was on indoors artwork and
music. As usual close to ffty artists participated, of almost
twenty nationalities.
The winter didnt shy away from the festival and stirred the
artists into action, many of whom had never seen snow
before, let alone owned an overcoat, and for some of them
this was their frst trip to a foreign country. The nature and
landscape certainly infuenced them, as well as all the others,
in a ferce and magnifcent manner.
Iceland is an endless source of inspiration for foreign guests
as well as Icelanders, and Garur, so spectacularly situated
against natures forces on the rocky and barren edge of
Reykjanes, especially so.
It is a tremendous challenge for the artists to work under
these conditions, and it is easily visible from the artwork that
the creation takes place outside their comfort zone, outside
of their usual approach.
Nothing is held back, the creative fow is absolute, the fow
of each individual artist, but also when looked upon the
group as a whole.
In some amazing way an absolutely limitless creativity fows
between artists and artforms. People with different skills and
artistic backgrounds, who have never met before, start
making art together, sharing and enjoying each others talents.
In this lies, amongst other things, the strength of Fresh Winds,
and this is what makes the festival so special for the artists
and the community at large which benefts greatly from the
creative energy it brings.

Variable size.

A country, some gods and stories
1. Iceland impresses. Its language is prior to man.
The water, the sea, the earth are exuberance. Here the air
is a vivid and emptying mass. I let it take me.
2. I put in order nights and days so I could move between them.
I resume the thread of my work on the human beings; the gods,
their stories.
3. The mythology is a vast story. Here in Iceland its breath
is strong with the narratives of the northern mythology of
the EDDA by SNORRI STURLUSON . I connect the sky and
the earth, the day and the night; I put in dialogue Icelands
seduction and the magic of the tales whose reinterpretation
I propose. These are three degrees of reading to answer three
essential questions : Where? When? How?
How is the question which concerns the artist and interests
the public. How is a style ... a peculiar version of the universal.
I give you mine,
thank you.

When I meet a foreign culture, I try not to think about
anything. I try to absorb every experience, to be amazed
by all novelties and let every little thing affect me. It is
mainly a psychological impact, which is later transformed
intellectually. These experiences will be built into my
work in a direct or latent way. Is it possible to capture the
ephemeral moment? In our memory we remember/

the experiences of these days.

View from the lighthouse
The inspiration for this artwork came to me here in Garur,
where the strong wind blows from all directions.
I was intrigued by the vast horizon that fathoms the
darkness at the twilight. I wanted to interpret both
the force and spirit that this good society has to offer.
Looking into the darkness from the lighthouse, where
it is hardly possible to distinguish between ocean, earth,
man and spirit.

A line is a line is a line. Lines of black on white, the trembling
soul, the hungry body, the gravitational pull humbly watching the
Auroras dance in the January skies. Wind like blue bricks, the
delicate fow of water stains falling into obedient grids. Circles
drawn on the lighthouse wall give geometric sign to the vast
chaotic dark. Moved by the story of Icelantic fshermen, who
went out in the raging icy sea to save Marines, I have marked
83 crosses in one of the spheres, painted on the lighthouse
wall, counting and remembering each anonymous one of them.

In Gardur, one is nearby the faraway
This oxymoron expresses what I feel since I arrived in Island:
land of contrast. Depending on lights and weather, looking at
this landscape beaten by winds, my heart is shrinking inside me
or a short time later, I feel that Im almost reaching the sky.
I wanted to meet Gardurs people and share my dance with
them. We did an intergenerational performance together,
from the bottom to the top of the lighthouse, trying to catch
the sky.

What I fnd attractive is the hypnotic power of great natural,
virgin spaces. My research is THE RELATION BETWEEN THE
ENVIRONMENT AND THE PAINTING. The SEA is my present
theme. But the discovery of the Icelandic landscapes has changed my
focus. This new focus has also left me with some reservation. I need
to put distance between this new vision and reality to give place to
the imaginary . WHITE has appeared in my palette, unusual colour
for me, its liquidity is like melting snow and fows as tears. Fresh
Winds residence has produced this new vision. Experiencing the
work in progress of the other artists has also inspired my practice.
Magnifcally organised by Mireya, her instigation of Fresh Winds
blows an artistic and warm wind. Daily life takes on a very great
importance with the meals, sharing, food preparation, discussions,
parties, promenades. Inviting artists from all over the world, Fresh
Winds works towards circulation of artists to create friendship
connections and to open the artists community.

I thought Snow is really white when I went to Iceland.
So, I decided to use white.
In a Japanese magazine, there was a story about a belief that
if a person who goes to Iceland brings back a stone from the
country, the stone will let the person return there. So, I thought
I wanted to use the stone.

Between tides
Fred and Armandos work in the old lighthouse
is a project of artistic intervention in it,
as an allegory of the hard and dramatic process
of settlement of the frst Icelanders.
Thus, we have realized that the old lighthouses
reality is as an object of symbolic character,
which marks the boundary between the sea
(random space, organic chaos, divine, etc.)
and the land (specifc space, non-organic,
organized, human, etc.).

The work refers to the main feature that Iceland and Mexico
share: their geological (the North American plate), which
creates a link between various nations and allowed our
territories to emerge from the seabed.
In this art-piece, both territories get mixed by our mountains
chains, so a new territory appears, where the nature of our
physiography will be mixed, creating new landscapes.

The Book of Gardur
The diary-like object was made of old wooden planks,
I found in Gardur. They were already formed by the Icelandic
weather and by time. They were partially painted but the color
is weathered. They show traces of use, wounds ... So the diary
was not only created by me ; I just added my personal story
about Gardur, the atmosphere and my impression of the
amazing nature in Iceland by cutting, painting, scraping and
trimming them.
By opening the Leporello you may discover - side by side -

I wonder where we are headed in our creations.
What we want to create.
We have heard ancient stories of the protection of DNA,
and stories of great nature disasters that have practically laid
ruin to our Mother Earth.
Now we gather DNA from plants which we store in an Ark
of some kind in Svalbard in Northern Norway, where the
plant seeds are deepfrozen in a bunker below ground.

I am a painter who makes images of images. I am connected
to the world through the act of painting. From the moment
I take up the brush I fnd myself caught up in the space of
painting. The canvas is far from empty. In the atelier I can
hear voices, I smell odour of colors that bear names of past
masters. The starting point is here, the tradition of painting,
images upon images, where nothing is invented.

Vastness - outside and inner landscapes
The winds sing, with a single breath, endless.
Tomorrows fowers tremble, they embrace under the ice
of Earth. Everything is both empty and full.
Having returned to the very frst sound. To the noises
of the immense wave with the arrow made of clay.
Tense, fragile.
Eternal renewal of each and every sun. each and every instant,
a little piece of buried truth, glows in the darkness.
The strange light of a sky, closer than ever.
To stagger under the squalls, almost fying away at times.
So simply, without even a future, without a past, feeling alive.
And maybe on the path, to dive. to fall in the well within.
To let die here, everything . All of myself.
To give up on, until the hopes of a fnal breath.
To go away. Thereto. God knows where. To the other side.
Answering the call.
Come back then, with bursting hands,
splattering love onto the clouds and the pebbles.
The world around. all the ones I carry within.
In one way or another,
to offer myself to the One who sees.

Master coal, I always wanted for different reasons to cook
with coal in Iceland. But in this windy area of Garur it seems
impossible. Luckily the sea is everywhere on this edge of
the end of the peninsula, bringing the important thing, the
wood. Driftwood, comes from nowhere, Les bois des mers
, certainly some parts of the big world tree Yggdrasill. I am
very inspired to use this wood so important for Icelanders
in old time. Coast farmers often plant the tree upside down,
roots in the sky. This act, very symbolic in my mind, gives my
carbonization an initiatic character.

Names of artists in Fresh Winds 2014
Statement
I am inspired by the elemental, by place and by collaboration
with people. I wanted to make something to celebrate each
artist here so I wrote their names in silver wire, tied them to a
rock from Gardur, and joined earth and air.
I also made a Found Poem from listening to the artists
speaking, it is their words joined together,
The Wind Is A Structure In Vastness.

The wind is a structure for vastness
found poem from artists words, Fresh Winds, Gardur
vastness is a clap ripple
a chaos pocket
sleeping time
vastness is not a straight line
a sharp view
too much light
memories or myths
lost in silence
vastness is a white circle drum
a downward halo
where all the captured moments go
tick of the lighthouse
lost as an eyelash
je regard la vastness
the almost silence
vastness is ellipsing geometry
of night constellations
arc shapers
to be bored can be lost vast lost vast lost vast
I walked to the sea
that stone wall of vastness is not easy
a boat and all those crosses
end in silence
there needs to be an opening in the vastness
though vastness stole my people
maybe I fnd forests in vastness
or even casablanca
there is a small cooking of nature in the vastness
when the sun rises its for you
stamp leave partir
we are sound singers
in the vastness
sailing in a breaking vessel
under the sky
we are a slow body
too heavy to stand
when the light shifts
new vastness
The Film Water is life the Ship of Fools
A Supertoxic & Eyebird production, London, UK/Naxos,
Greece.
Eskimos have 200 different words for SNOW - Greeks have
1340 words for WATER. Manolis Glezos in his book Water.
They were the frst to build ships, curved on both ends,
and they frst put up sails, the wings of a seagoing ship. Hesiod
(fragm. 205).
Every day 6000 children die from illnesses coming from
polluted water!
Every year 2,2 million people die from polluted or no
drinking water and no sanitation! Every human has to have at
least 50 liters water per day for cooking, drinking and washing!
It is known that people in industrial countries use 150 liters of
water per person each day! In dry regions a person has often
only 5 litres per day - for drinking, cooking, personal hygiene
and cleaning of all sorts - in contrast, a washing machine uses
at least 40 ltr. per cycle, modern toilets use a minimum of 3
litres with each fush, this is 75 % of the daily water people have
per person in the dry regions of earth! Some small islands in
Greece are reliant on imported water! The next big war will
be - not about oil - but ... WATER.
