INTRODUCTION

In today's gospel Jesus offers everyday images that reveal to us the reign of
God: a tree that becomes a sheltering home, yeast that penetrates and
expands, a treasured pearl, a net that gains a great catch. Even as we seek
the riches of God's reign, the great surprise is that God's grace finds us first!

CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.

As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.

We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.

PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW

Gracious God, you have placed within the hearts of all your children a
longing for your word and a hunger for your truth. Grant that we may know
your Son to be the true bread of heaven and share this bread with all the
world, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP

PRELUDE
Prelude in Eb from The Well Tempered Clavier, Book 2 J. S. Bach

WELCOME

ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from
whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration
of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify
your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

The assembly kneels or stands. Silence is kept for reflection.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have
sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done
and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole
heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of
your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and
lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the
glory of your holy name. Amen.

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and
made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the
name of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you
with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts
through faith.
Amen.

Please stand and sing:

Please be seated.

A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN

FIRST READING: Genesis 29:1528

15
Then Laban said to Jacob, "Because you are my kinsman, should you
therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?"
16
Now
Laban had two daughters; the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of
the younger was Rachel.
17
Leah's eyes were lovely, and Rachel was
graceful and beautiful.
18
Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, "I will serve you
seven years for your younger daughter Rachel."
19
Laban said, "It is better
that I give her to you than that I should give her to any other man; stay with
me."
20
So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but
a few days because of the love he had for her.

21
Then Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife that I may go in to
her, for my time is completed."
22
So Laban gathered together all the people
of the place, and made a feast.
23
But in the evening he took his daughter
Leah and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her.
24
(Laban gave his
maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her maid.)
25
When morning came, it
was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Did
I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?"
26
Laban
said, "This is not done in our country giving the younger before the
firstborn.
27
Complete the week of this one, and we will give you the other
also in return for serving me another seven years."
28
Jacob did so, and
completed her week; then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as a wife.

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

PSALM 105:111, 45b

Refrain:

Tone:

1
Give thanks to the LORD and call up-
|
on God's name;
make known the deeds of the LORD a-
|
mong the peoples.
2
Sing to the
|
LORD, sing praises,
and speak of all God's
|
marvelous works.
3
Glory in God's
|
holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the
|
LORD rejoice.
4
Search for the strength
|
of the LORD;
continually
|
seek God's face.
5
Remember the marvels
|
God has done,
the wonders and the judgments
|
of God's mouth,
6
O offspring of Abra-
|
ham, God's servant,
O children of Jacob, God's
|
chosen ones. R
7
The LORD
|
is our God,
whose judgments prevail in
|
all the world,
8
who has always been mindful
|
of the covenant,
the promise made for a thousand
|
generations:
9
the covenant
|
made with Abraham,
the oath
|
sworn to Isaac,

10
which God established as a stat-
|
ute for Jacob,
an everlasting cove-
|
nant for Israel,
11
saying, "To you will I give the
|
land of Canaan
to be your allotted inheritance."
45b

|
Hallelujah! R

SECOND READING: Romans 8:2639

26
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to
pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for
words.
27
And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the
Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of
God.

28
We know that all things work together for good for those who
love God, who are called according to his purpose.
29
For those whom he
foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in
order that he might be the firstborn within a large family.
30
And those
whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also
justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.

31
What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who
is against us?
32
He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for
all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else?
33
Who will bring
any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.
34
Who is to
condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the
right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.
35
Who will separate us
from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine,
or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36
As it is written,
"For your sake we are being killed all day long;
we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered."

37
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who
loved us.
38
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor
rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,
39
nor height, nor
depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the
love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Please stand for the reading of the gospel.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

VERSE: Many will come from | east and west*
and will eat in the king- | dom of heaven. (Matt. 8:11)

GOSPEL: Matthew 13:3133, 4452

The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord.

31
He put before them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a
mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field;
32
it is the smallest
of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and
becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its
branches."

33
He told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like
yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of
it was leavened."

44
The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which
someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and
buys that field.

45
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine
pearls;
46
on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had
and bought it.

47
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into
the sea and caught fish of every kind;
48
when it was full, they drew it
ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad.
49
So
it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil
from the righteous
50
and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there
will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

51
Have you understood all this? They answered, "Yes."
52
And he
said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom
of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure
what is new and what is old."

The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

Please be seated.

HYMN OF THE DAY: J esus, Priceless Treasure(ELW 775)

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the
dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Pastor: Filled by the Spirit, let us join the whole people of God in Christ
Jesus in praying for the church, those in need, and all of God's creation.

Each petition ends with:
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

Into your loving hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray,
trusting in your abundant mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior.
Amen.

Please stand as we greet one another in the peace of the risen Christ.

THE PEACE

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

PREFACE

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son,
who reached out to heal the sick and suffering,
who preached good news to the poor,
and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all.

In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension,
we await his coming in glory.

Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord,
and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food,
the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord;
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be all honor and glory, now and forever.
Amen.

LORD'S PRAYER

Risen Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and
ever. Amen.
