If you nish within the last 5 minutes of the exam, you must remain seated until time
is called and you are asked to STAND. You will have ten seconds to stop writing and
to stand, leaving your exam on your desk. The TAs will then go from row to row and
collect the exams while you remain standing at your desk. You may not leave or talk
until all exams are collected. There will be point penalities for failing to comply with
any of these instructions.
Neatness counts in the sense that it helps us to allot partial credit.
Do not start the exam before the proctor announces start. The exam is 115 minutes.
You MUST put nal numerical or symbolic answers in the spaces provided to receive full credit.
Do not write in this grade box, for TA use only

Only optics and radiation problems appear on this practice exam. Four problems will be randomly selected
from exams I, II, and III, altered in some way, and included in the actual nal exam, making it semi-cumulative. Any
equations needed to solve these problems will appear on the equation sheet. You should thoroughly master the
problem on exams I,II,II as preparation for the nal. The nal is weighted equally with the three midterm
exams (it will be scaled to 100 points).
Problem 1A. Take a pair of stacked microscope
slides 1.0 mm thick (n = 1.9), and use a hair to prop
open the right-hand end of the stack. Illuminate
from above using a 500.0 nm light source, and look
down on the stack, suppose that you see what is
illustrated above literally, dark is black, bright
is white. What is the diameter D of the hair? The
hair is not shown.

Problem 1B. All of the interference fringes for two-slit interference are of equal brightness I
0
only if the slit-width
a is nearly zero. What is the ratio of intensities of the n = 3 fringe to the n = 0 fringe if d = 5a?
