Dambusters Remembered

RRTwo Men Held Over Plane

Threat Denied Bail
A JUDGE has denied bail for two men
who allegedly threatened to blow up a
plane flying from Pakistan to Britain.
UK residents Tayyab Subhani, 30,
and Mohammed Safdar, 41, were arrested May 25 after their Pakistan International Airways flight was diverted to
Londons Stansted Airport with a Royal
Air Force fighter jet in tow.
The pair appeared a few days later
at Chelmsford Magistrates Court in
eastern England charged with endangering the operation of an aircraft. They
spoke only to confirm their names and
addresses but their lawyers said they
would deny the charge.
They are expected back in court on
August 5 to make a formal plea.

A ROYAL AIR FORCE Lancaster Bomber sweeps low over the Derwent Dam in England during the Battle of

Germany during WWII. The raid, led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, commenced on May 16 1943 when
19 RAF Lancaster Bombers of 617 Squadron launched an air assault using bouncing bombs - destroying
the Mohne and the Eder dams, and damaging a third. As a result the Squadron has ever after been

voters appeared to punish the ruling government, fed up with economic doldrums
and austerity measures. Britains nationalist party appeared to be the recipient of a
sizeable protest vote against the political
elite and the EU, analysts said.
According to returns May 3 from 34
contests across England, the right-wing
United Kingdom Independence Party,
or UKIP, won 139 county council seats,
while the mainstream opposition Labour
Party gained 291.
DOWN
The Liberal Democrats junior partners
in Britains coalition government were
down 124 county council seats, while
Camerons ruling Conservatives lost 335
seats in the vote.
UKIP leader Nigel Farage whose party
Cameron once referred to as a bunch of
fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists
said the results will send a shock wave
through the British political establishment.
This is a real sea-change in British
politics, Farage told the BBC.
Camerons popularity has taken a beating as the government sticks to a strict
policy of austerity to cut Britains debts,

payments.
The prime minister now finds himself
in the difficult position of trying to shore
up right-wing backing ahead of the next
general election in 2015, while trying to
maintain his own affinity for more leftwing causes.
PROTEST
The results are a mixture of typical
midterm protest and rage against the
machine, said Tony Travers, director of
the government department at the London School of Economics and Political
Science.
It is a traditional midterm protest vote
and its found its lightning conductor
through UKIP, Travers said. However,
there is a more generalized protest that
isnt just against this government in its
midterm, but is also a protest against
mainstream elite politics.
He suggested UKIPs appeal and the
local election results bear echoes of the
Tea Party movement in the US, complete
with cries of we need to get our country
back.
This is a vote against theyre all the
same.
While last months results will jeopardize the Conservative Partys success
in the 2015 general election, Travers was
skeptical the local elections would steer
Cameron further to the right.

POLICE SAY they are investigating new

leads in the case of Madeleine McCann,
the Briton who disappeared six years ago
in Portugal at the age of three.
Scotland Yard said it has identified
several persons of interest and both
investigative and forensic opportunities in the case. The force said last
month its work is under way to support
police in Portugal, even though they
have closed their investigation into the
disappearance.
McCann vanished from her familys
vacation home in Portugals Algarve
region on May 3, 2007, days before her
fourth birthday. The case has generated
intense media interest in Britain.
British police launched Operation

puzzle.
Detective Chief Superintendent
Hamish Campbell said officers have
been encouraged by the progress made
so far.

RRPolice: Tiger Escaped

Pen To Attack Keeper
WHEN zoo keeper Sarah McClay was
mauled to death by a Sumatran tiger at
an animal park in England, its owner
alleged she had entered the animals pen
against safety rules.
But police said last month thats not
what happened.
After conducting an investigation,
police said the tiger escaped from its
pen and attacked 24-year-old McClay
May 25 as she was working in a staff
area at South Lakes Wild Animal Park
in northwestern England.
She later died of her injuries at a
hospital.
Cumbria police said they are trying to
find out how and why the tiger escaped.
The park owner claimed McClay
broke the rules by entering the tigers
pen for an unknown reason.

RRScottish Cardinal To Atone

THE VATICAN last month ordered
a disgraced Scottish cardinal to leave
Scotland for several months to pray and
atone for sexual misconduct, issuing a
rare public sanction against a prince of
the church and the first such punishment meted out by Pope Francis.
Cardinal Keith OBrien resigned
as archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh and recused himself from the
March conclave that elected Francis
pope after a newspaper reported unnamed priests allegations that he acted
inappropriately toward them.
OBrien subsequently acknowledged he had engaged in unspecified
sexual misbehavior. He apologized and
promised to stay out of the churchs
public life.

POLICE arrested a 10th suspect

May 28 in connection with the
vicious street killing of a soldier
in London, an apparent Islamic
extremist attack that has horrified
the country and heightened racial
tensions.
The 50-year-old man was detained in
Welling, east of London, on suspicion of
conspiring to murder 25-year-old soldier
Lee Rigby, Scotland Yard said.
The latest arrest came as more details
trickled out about the background of Michael Adebolajo, 28, one of the two main
British suspects in the May 22 slaying. He
and Michael Adebowale, 22, were shot and
wounded by police at the scene.
Rigby, an off-duty soldier who had
served in Afghanistan, was run over by a
vehicle and repeatedly attacked with meat
cleavers near his barracks in London.
British officials say the two main suspects had been known to them for some
time, but revelations that Adebolajo had
been arrested in Kenya in 2010 and
claims that British security officials had
tried to recruit him as an informer after
that have fueled questions about whether
UK authorities could have done more to
prevent last weeks killing.
QUESTIONING
One of two suspects in the slaying of
Lee Rigby has been released from the
hospital and taken to a police station for
questioning. The suspect, whom a family
friend identified as Michael Adebowale,
22, will be questioned by officers from
Scotland Yards counterterrorism command, police said. He also has been
arrested on suspicion of the attempted
murder of a police officer, police said, but
provided no details.
Four other men and a suspect arrested
earlier remained in custody at a London
police station, while one other man has
been released on bail. Two women were
released without charge in the case.

Task Force Set Up

To Target Radical
Preachers
BRITAINS government is setting up a
new terrorism task force to tackle radical preachers and extremism following
the brutal killing of British soldier Lee
Rigby.
The group will look at whether new
powers and laws are needed to clamp
down on religious leaders who promote
extremist messages and who target
potential recruits in jails, schools and
mosques.
The force will include senior ministers, Londons police chief and the head
of the MI5 domestic security service.
Sundays announcement came less
than a week after 25-year-old British
soldier Lee Rigby was run over and
stabbed to death in a London street.
Hard-line Muslim leaders have identified one of the two suspects as Michael
Adebolajo, an Islam convert who
allegedly used to take part in events
organized by British radical group alMuhajiroun.

Band Fans Refused Entrance If ous sighting to the council through the Fix My
They Couldnt Name Lead Singer Street website, reported the Brighton Argus.

BOUNCERS and police officers told fans

of the band The Vaccines they could not
enter a concert unless they could name the
lead singer.
There had been an apparent tip-off that
pickpockets were planning to target the
show. With this in mind, fans were asked
to name the indie band, the lead singer and
titles of their albums, before being allowed
into the venue in Llandudno, north Wales.
But six people were unable to answer
some of the questions, so had their 18.50
tickets confiscated and were refused admission, reported the Daily Mail.
One of those refused entry, Andy Bellis,
the lead singer of local band The Uninvited,
accused the police and venue bosses of
being heavy-handed.
He said: I got to the door with my tickets
and we were pulled aside by security who
asked us, Do you know the name of the
band youre seeing tonight?.
We said The Vaccines, and he asked us
if we could name their lead singer.
I couldnt think of his name off the top
of my head and then he asked us to name
their albums and I didnt know them either.
The bands lead singer is Justin Young
and their albums are What Did You Expect
From The Vaccines? and Come Of Age.
Venue Cymru manager Sarah Ecob
said an operation was launched after they
received intelligence about pickpockets
preparing to target the event.
I apologise to Mr Bellis, she said. We
will be refunding the ticket money to him.

Boys Break 132-Year Tradition

To Attend St Trinians School
THE SCHOOL that inspired the films St
Trinians will admit boys for the first time
in 132 years.
The Perse School for Girls in Cambridge,
which inspired Ronald Searles cartoons of
delinquent girls in gym slips, is to break with
tradition by teaching boys.
They will be able to join the private junior
school from September 2014 and the senior
school, which opened in 1881, four years
later. Tricia Kelleher, principal of the Stephen
Perse Foundation, said the time was right
to allow boys into the school.
Im very proud that the school was the
inspiration for St Trinians and my feeling
is that the criminality aside, the girls were
independent, individual and feisty, she said.
We want our girls to be like that and now
we want to offer that to boys too.
Ronald Searle, who died two years ago
aged 91, was born and grew up in Cambridge and memories of its feisty school
girls never left him.
It was only in 1993, he wrote to the
school librarian at the Perse School and
revealed the Perse Girls pupils were part of
his inspiration for the St Trinians cartoons.

Large Green Woman
FOLLOWING the attack of a 17-year-old girl,
police in York were hunting a woman in her
late teens, dressed as the Incredible Hulk.
The femalel attacker was covered in green
body paint with dyed red hair but is believed
to be a white woman, in her late teens or early
twenties and around 5ft 8in tall.
She is wanted after attacking the young
girl, who was left with bruising to her face
and a black eye in an attack outside a McDonalds restaurant.
PC Cheryl Hunter said: This appears

Thankfully the injuries were not too
severe. However, the outcome could have
been far more serious.

IN THESE DAYS where children are criticized

for not being more active, it came as a
surprise to many that a 10-year-old girl was
officially warned by police over chalking out
a hopscotch grid onto the pavement.
Lilly Allen was given the warning by two
officers as she played the skipping game
outside her home in Ramsgate, Kent, reported
the Daily Telegraph.
She was issued the warning, which is
described as criminal damage, after making
the outlines in white chalk, which washes

Her father, Robert Allen, 51, has since
lodged a formal complaint to Kent Police
over the incident.
Kent Police have identified the officer who
issued the warning and say the officer was
overzealous and has had that explained to
him. The officer concerned will now apologise
to the girl and her father in person.

ready until January. When customers arrive,
Selfridges staff will fetch their purchases and
put them in the car.
Simon Forster, the companys multi-channel director said: There will be a dedicated
area providing the level of service you would
expect from Selfridges. It will not just be the
first drive-thru service, it will be the best.
About half of Selfridges products are now
available to order online but it is envisaged
that everything apart from perishable food
will be represented by the end of the year.
Other innovations include a new interactive
text messaging service for home deliveries
so that they arrive only when someone is in
to receive them.

Skateboarders Fight Southbank

Plan

Skateboarders and graffiti artists who have

put the Southbank Centre undercroft on the
international tourist map for 40 years are
fighting plans that would see it turned into
restaurants and shops.
Long Live Southbank has lodged an application with Lambeth Council to protect
the undercroft by listing it as a community
asset. More than 25,000 people have signed
an online petition, with messages of support
from around the world.
A three-day event, organised by Long Live
Southbank recently, showcased the artistic
and skating heritage of the site. Under plans
published by the Southbank Centre, the
undercroft, a famous skateboarding venue
since the Seventies, would be lost forever.
Speaking on behalf of Long Live Southbank, Henry Edwards-Wood said: Southbank say in their plans that they will create a

new home for the skaters next to Hungerford

Bridge, but that misses the point.
What we have now grew organically and is
totally unique. People come from all over the
world to watch the skaters on the Southbank
and its sad to think something this creative
could be replaced by something as unimaginative and sterile as another glass mall.
Lambeth Council Leader, Lib Peck, said:
The Southbank Centre is an important asset to the borough, and the skate park has
become an established part of it. We would
like to see skateboarding kept on the South
Bank, and are confident that a satisfactory
solution can be found.

Hospital Stored Body Parts

One of Londons largest hospitals stored
organs, including childrens body parts, for
up to two decades without informing grieving families.
The parts were taken from bodies and
stored for tests by the forensic medicine
department at Kings College, London, as
far back as 1992 on behalf of the police or
coroners.
When the department shut in 2000, they
were handed to Guys and St Thomas Hospital for storage. The findings came to light
after a separate audit that showed police
stored almost 500 body parts and organs.

Not much shocks you on
the gay scene, parade organizer Mark McKenzie told the

Mirren dressed as the queen
cussing and swearing and making you
stop your parade thats a new one.
Chris Dangerfield, a comedian, was

The conductor, who really got it in the

group that lobbies on behalf of suspected
terrorists said Adebolajo and his family
had contacted it about six months ago complaining about harassment from Britains
MI5 domestic spy service. A case worker
who spoke with him said he appeared
paranoid and erratic, the group said.
His sister contacted the office to complain about constant harassment from MI5,
which extended to Michael, his brother,
and his father also, said Moazzam Begg
of the London-based group CagePrisoners.
They were all being approached in
different ways, Begg told The Associated
Press in a telephone interview. One of
them, he lived and worked abroad. Hed
been approached by MI6 (Britains external espionage agency) at his workplace
and had been offered some money. They
wanted him to work for them.
TORTURED
Begg said Adebolajo told the caseworker he had been tortured and threatened
with rape while in Kenya, and that he had
been interrogated for several hours upon
his return to London. At first, British intelligence services let him be, Begg said, but
in March 2012 they met with him and offered him a job as an informant. Adebolajo
refused, he said.
Kenyan officials said Adebolajo was
arrested in Kenya in 2010 with five others
near the countrys border with Somalia.
Police believed that Adebolajo was going
to work with the Somali Islamic militant
group al-Shabab.
Kenyan government spokesman Muthui
Kariuki told the AP that Adebolajo, who
was carrying a British passport, was taken
to court before he was handed over to British authorities in Kenya.
Britains Foreign Office confirmed that
Adebolajo was arrested in Kenya in 2010
and said the agency provided consular
assistance.
It was not clear how Adebolajo came to
be arrested and how he returned to London.
Kenyan officials have denied allegations
that he was tortured under interrogation.
Last month, Kenyas police chief David
Kimaiyo added confusion by contradicting
earlier claims and saying that Adebolajo
had never been arrested in Kenya.
CONVERTED
Earlier, hardline Muslim leaders described Adebolajo as a British citizen of
Nigerian descent who converted to Islam
attending demonstrations and lectures with
British radical group al-Muhajiroun.
Rigbys killing and Adebolajos apparent links to radical Islam have fed a spike
in anti-Muslim sentiment in Britain, with
police and activists reporting a surge in
hate crimes, violence and vandalism.
Around 1,000 supporters of the far-right
group English Defense League marched
through central London, May 26, to
protest the soldiers killing, clashing with
a smaller group of anti-fascist demonstrators and scuffling with riot police. Police
arrested 13 people, mostly on suspicion of
causing public disorder.
A mosque in the northern England town
of Grimsby was firebombed, according to
the mosques chairman, Diler Gharib. .
In the West Midlands, police charged
two people with racially aggravated public
order offenses during weekend protests.

SPECIAL FROM

UJs American In
The UK, Cat Snitzer
AS A RESIDENT of Woolwich
area, my heart has been broken by
the events that transpired in this
leafy suburb. Lee Rigby, a drummer
and gunner for the Royal Regiment
of Fusiliers, was mercilessly hacked
to death yards away from The
Woolwich Barracks.
Coming home from school, my
roommates were glued to the TV
screen, the images were sickening,
we were sure it was not a terror
attack, (we thought it was road
rage, why else would someone
be run down?) How wrong we
were... Traffic was routed out of the
neighborhood, and a bizarre quiet
descended over the area. We had not
seen the video of the impromptu
interview with blood soaked hands,
fielding calls from back home,
assuring them it was some violent
gang fight (it happens around here
sometimes) we did not know the
full hell that had reined down. As
the horror unfolded and what really
had happened came to light, I was
sickened.
The poor soldier going about his
day, going through whatever random
thing that was on his agenda, had
survived duty in Afghanistan only to
be slaughtered on the quiet tree lined
streets of Woolwich. While we were
wrapping our heads around a fallen
soldier in our own neighborhood,
the news started to pour out. The
three Angels of Woolwich rushed
in to try to prevent further harm and
sought to comfort the soldier. While
a mother placed a hand on his back
and prayed, her daughter stood over
her and the soldiers body. Another
woman put her hands in her pocket
and asked one of the attackers for the
knives; she had balls of steel. When
the attacker told her, they wanted to
start a war she responded, There
are few of you and many of us. Just
sit with that for a minute. She spoke
on the morning news about how she
thought it was better if they attacked
her than a child. She has gumption,
something we all need. The two

leader, would leave Scotland for several
months of spiritual renewal, prayer and
penance for the same reasons he decided
not to participate in the conclave.
The statement didnt specify that the
decision was imposed on OBrien by
the Vatican as punishment, and in fact
went out of its way to suggest that the
decision was OBriens. But in the past,

to come, (some say they took up
to 30 min to get there) and charged
them, apparently wanting this all
captured on TV. As you will already
be aware, the men are not dead even
though the police unleashed a hail
of bullets, and they are now being
treated in two separate and unnamed
hospitals in London.
Houses are being raided all
across South East London, and
other suspects being questioned,
while the poor soldiers family is
going to have to live with this for
the rest of their lives. His son is
going to grow up with out a father
because a home-grown terrorist, of
a Christian background, became
radicalized. The terrorist has been
known to stand around downtown
Woolwich preaching, and to think
we all could have walked by this
scum and never thought twice
about him is incredible. There are
a lot of preachers on the street
corners in Woolwich, but some have
suggested he preached of his hatred
for England. I really cant imagine

that, because we are not a group of

shrinking violets in this town, and
someone would have gone mental
on him. While he speaks of his land,
and how the troops must occupy it in
a London accent, confusion is rife.
How did this happen? The answer
may never be fully known. However,
one part has been exposed, and it
is frighteningly close to home. My
University, that I am very fond of
and devoted to, has been flung into
the debate, as it has emerged that
the attackers went to the University
of Greenwich, and may have met at
the Islamic Society. No, no, no!!!! I
know absolutely nothing about this
society, to be honest I know nothing
about any of the societies.
I go to school to study, I socialize
more outside. The school is a vast
melting pot of people and ideas,
when I did my MA in Media Arts
Practice and Philosophy that was
part of the draw, no two people
in the course were from the same
country or ideology. We would
debate and shout at each other
while reading Kant, Heidegger

Kierkegaard, the list goes on. I

learned more from my MA than
anything in my life, sure sometimes
it got heating, after all I am a true
American Patriot, I once almost
knocked a desk over while storming
out, but I was back next week ready
to listen and debate. University is
supposed to be about the exchanged
of ideas, it is supposed to be a safe
place to fight, for disagreement, but
above all it is to learn, not spread
hate.
A soldier lost his life in the most
senseless way, a family lost a father,
a brother a son, and a husband.
Nothing can ever bring that back.
Something must be done, there are
no easy answers but it is time to
really start looking.
Lee Rigbys service is over, may
he rest in peace.

REFUSED
The Vatican has refused to even
confirm whether it was investigating the
allegations against OBrien, even though
the Scottish Catholic Churchs media
office said the complaints had been forwarded to Rome and that it expected an
investigation.
Archbishop Philip Tartaglia, who is
running the archdiocese until a successor to OBrien is named, has spoken of
the outrage directed at the church for the

hypocrisy OBriens case revealed.

OBrien was vehemently outspoken
in his opposition to gay rights, condemning homosexuality and calling same-sex
marriage a grotesque subversion of a
universally accepted human right. Last
year, the gay rights group Stonewall
named OBrien Bigot of the Year.
That he then admitted to engaging in

inappropriate sexual behavior with men

prompted gay rights groups to demand
an apology.
There is little doubt that the credibility and moral authority of the Catholic
Church in Scotland has been dealt a serious blow, and we will need to come to
terms with that, Tartaglia said in a March
4 homily after OBrien resigned.

Prince Harry, Missy Franklin

Launch Warrior Games
The New W Work Visa

THE RECENTLY introduced Senate bill on

comprehensive immigration reform totals
844 pages and addresses such areas as
what to do with the approximately 11 million
people already in the US in unlawful status,
reworking some of the temporary work visa
categories, tweaking the green card process
and enforcement of our immigration laws.
One particularly interesting and controversial
piece of the proposed reform addresses the
temporary need for lower skilled workers in
such industries as hospitality, home health
care, construction, etc; hence the advent of
the new W visa.
Many employers are experiencing severe
shortages of lesser skilled, but critical workers. They put on job fairs, offer signing bonuses and offer other incentives but continue
to come up short of the needed numbers to
address demand. Availability of the proposed
W visa will be made available in 2015
and start off with a supply of 20,000. That
number can increase yearly to a maximum
of 200,000. A new Federal agency will be
established to monitor unemployment rates
and specific demand.
Currently, there is the H-2B visa for lesser
skilled foreign workers but that only addresses those jobs that are seasonal or less than
one year in need. This fills the gap to address
year round need, typically on a project basis.
The wages paid to W visa holders must be
that which is paid to similarly employed US
workers. The fact of the matter is that for an
employer to employ a W visa worker (as
with many work visa classifications), it will
actually be more expensive than employing a

US worker. Government filing fees and legal

fees to put together the complex application
are not insignificant. An employer would
therefore only do this if they could not find
qualified and available US workers.
Construction workers are addressed
separately and visas allocated to them will
only number up to 15,000. The visa can be
issued for an initial three year period and can
be extended for three more. The application
process requires employers to register
specific jobs after a 30 day recruitment period
is completed. Foreign workers in the US in
W visa status can move to other employers
as long as that employer has registered that
occupation and the foreign worker continues
to work in that occupation. Spouses of W
visa holders are eligible to apply for employment authorization and children can attend
school just like children of other principle
visa holders.
The Senate is presently debating amendments to the entire bill and then it will continue
through the legislative process. At this time,
the fate of the W visa and the entire bill is
uncertain. There should be some clarity on
the fate of this Bill in the coming months.

British Fugitive Caught

Sunbathing In Spain
By Harold Heckle
SPANISH police snuck up on a British
fugitive as he sunbathed, arresting him in
a dramatic raid that even saw the suspect
leap onto the roof of a nearby outhouse to
try to get away.
The arrest of Andrew Terence Moran,
31, last month came some four years after
he assaulted and escaped from security
guards during an armed robbery trial in
the United Kingdom.
Moran was found at a luxury villa in
Calpe, a resort on the Alicante coast, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, an Interior
Ministry statement said.
Police video footage showed how officers stealthily approached a swimming
pool while hiding behind walls before
pouncing on Moran as he relaxed in red
swimming trunks.
As soon as police jumped over the walls,
Moran tried to flee, leaping onto the tiled
roof of a pool-side outhouse before being
captured.
According to Britains Serious Organized Crime Agency, police also seized
two handguns, 60 rounds of ammunition
and a machete.
Moran thought he could evade capture
fleeing to Spain, frequently changing his
appearance and using false identities,
said Matt Burton, SOCAs head of in-

vestigations.
During his escape from custody in 2009,
Moran assaulted four security guards and
vaulted over the courtroom dock. He was
convicted in his absence of conspiracy to
commit armed robbery.
Alerted to his presence near the Mediterranean coast, Spanish police tracked him
down last November. However, Moran
managed to get away after using his vehicle to ram two belonging to the police
and driving off at high speed on the wrong
side of a highway.
Moran was due to appear in a Madrid
court where a judge will begin extradition
proceedings.
Devalda was arrested in March 2011
at a hotel in the southern luxury resort of
Marbella. He was extradited to Britain
where he was sentenced to nine years
and eight months in jail for conspiracy to
commit armed robbery and seven months
for jumping bail.

By Dan Elliott
ESCORTED by Britains Prince Harry
and swimming superstar Missy Franklin, a
US Navy officer blinded by an improvised
bomb in Afghanistan lit an Olympic-style
cauldron last month to launch the Warrior
Games for wounded service members.
Lt Bradley Snyder, Harry and Franklin
completed the last leg of a brief torch
relay at the US Olympic Training Center
in Colorado Springs to formally start the
games.
All three lifted the torch to the lip of the
cauldron to ignite the flame.
It was a touching start to the Paralympic-style games last month. About 260
athletes competed in basketball, volleyball,
shooting, archery, track and field and
swimming Snyders sport.
Britain sent a 35-member team, and the
prince met with the athletes earlier. He also
sat on a gymnasium floor in a circle of 12
sitting volleyball players, batting the ball
around amid whoops and laughter.
Harry served as a combat helicopter in
pilot in Afghanistan, and the British veterans said that makes him easy to talk to.
INTEREST
He knows what its like out there, said
Army Capt Dave Henson, a member of the
volleyball team. Hes been on the ground
and in the air.
Henson, 28, lost both legs when an
improvised bomb exploded in Afghanistan two years ago. He said Harry took a
personal interest in the athletes recovery
and the quality of their health care.
Royal Marine Matthew Hancox, 25,
said the prince recognized some wounded
veterans he had met before and asked them
how they were recovering.
Hes very down-to-earth, said Hancox, who was shot in
the chest in Afghanistan in 2011.
The prince also
attended a volleyball
match later on the
Saturday night.
The visit to Colorado got underway
when Harry charmed
dozens of dignitaries,
British expatriates,
students and military
officers at a cocktail party welcoming
him to Colorado. He
also joined the crowd
in singing Happy
Birthday to Franklin, a Coloradan who
was celebrating turning 18 at a golf club
south of Denver.
She won four gold
medals in the 2012
Olympic Games in
London.
A captain in
Britains Army Air
Corps, Harry has deployed to Afghani-

stan twice, and he wore a brown camouflage uniform and tan combat boots when
he met with the British team.
His first deployment, as a forward air
controller in 2007-2008, was cut short after
10 weeks when details of his whereabouts
were disclosed in the media.
On his second deployment, he was a copilot and gunner on an Apache helicopter.
He acknowledged to reporters he had
targeted Taliban fighters, and when asked
if he had killed anyone, said, Yeah, so,
lots of people have.
Hes was attending the Colorado games
because he believes the wounded deserve
recognition, according to a statement from
St James Palace in London, the official
residence of the royal family.

Eight Percent UKIP Vote Creates Chaos

THEY ARE all running scared of Nigel Farage now (see Man who fell to earth UJ,
Feb 13).
In the May county council elections his
Ukip party garnered 25 percent of the votes,
an impressive result achieved from a standing
start. Before the elections Ukip had 24 councillors across the entire country. Afterwards
they had nearly 150. Consequently, they
now have voices on councils but nowhere
have they won control of one. Which is just
as well since the one thing they are lacking
is a set of policies.
Their presence is most marked down the
east of the country: West Sussex, Kent, Suffolk, Norfolk and Lincolnshire. Coincidentally,
these are the places to which most European
immigrants have been attracted by farm work
generally and fruit picking in particular. Here
the population identify most strongly with
Ukips antagonism to foreign workers.
It is strange what qualities can be electorally attractive for they are what has created
this massive surge in support for Ukip. One of
the most charismatic politicians in the Britain
of today is Boris Johnson, Mayor of London.
CLUMSY
His appeal seems mainly to lie in being a
faux-naf, a clumsy, tousled blond innocent.
He gives the impression of a complete lack of
self-regard. Nothing he does remotely embarrasses him. Recently he was ambushed by a
TV interviewer, Eddie Mair, who detailed four
matters: Boriss lying to his party leader; his
apparent sympathising with a public school
conman; marital infidelity, and inventing a
Times newspaper quote for which he was
sacked. Mair concluded, Youre a nasty
piece of work.
Johnson grinned mutely and shuffled
uneasily in his seat. Afterwards he praised
Mair for excellent journalism declaring that it
was right the BBC should hold public figures
to account. Boriss peccadilloes will have
not the slightest adverse effect upon his
popularity.
In much the same way, Nigel Farage is
equally able to have his audience rolling in
the aisles.
TOFF
He is commonly pictured walking down
the street dressed like a toff with a pint of beer
in one hand and a cigarette in the other, his
face scrunched up in laughter. Boris himself
has described him as a rather engaging
geezer who talks about having enjoyed his
job in the city until lunchtime and makes
tasteless jokes about the death of the late
Eastleigh Tory MP, Steven Milligan.
Farages appeal lies in his ability to
convince his listeners who are deeply

disillusioned by the
economic mess that
is the fault of all political parties. They
are all the same
with leaders who all
went to the same
schools and Oxford
colleges. Yet his
background is the
same as that of the
politicians he lampoons. He himself is the son of a stockbroker,
went to a public school and worked in the
City, leaving the Conservative Party when
John Major signed the Maastricht Treaty.
His secret is to have linked his obsession
with leaving the European Union to immigration by claiming that the EU causes the
excessive immigration.
PROMINENCE
One of the major changes in the past three
years has pushed him into undue prominence. This is the retreat of the Lib Dems
from the political scene. For generations they
have attracted the protest vote, contentedly
opposing everything
and causing violent
swings in by-elections
and council votes.
It will come as no
surprise to you to learn
that in the council vote
on the night when Ukip
Nigel Farage swept so much before it,
that the Lib Dems fared worst of all parties,
losing a third of all their council seats.
Indeed in the parliamentary by-election on
that day when the Labour stronghold of South
Shields came up for grabs following David
Milibands resignation, the Lib Dems came
seventh, miles behind the British National
Party candidate and with only 150 more
votes than the Loony candidate Howling Laud
Hope. Little wonder then that in the same
election Ukip came second behind Labour
with the Tories out of sight in third place.
WORST
Protest vote or not, Ukip has put the wind
up the Tories. The Conservatives share of
the council vote stood at 28 percent, their
worst-ever performance. It was estimated
that Ukip took three-quarters of their votes
from the Tories and a quarter from Labour.
This would have a devastating effect at the
next election most seriously on David
Camerons party.
The single issue which has powered Ukip
is the EU and the necessity of leaving it. But
it is the most toxic of matters for the Tories,

splitting them right down the middle for the

last twenty-odd years.
Cameron tried to buy time by saying he will
seek to renegotiate Britains relationship with
the rest of the EU and guarantee an in/out vote
by 2017 provided he wins the next election.
This ploy failed to buy him the Ukip votes
he wanted. Farage has said he will work in
coalition with the Tories as long as they ditch
Cameron as their leader and replace him with
guess who? You got it Boris!
It is an extraordinary demand and comes
at a time when Britains position in the EU
is offering so much. Cameron talked with
Barack Obama last month about a new trade
deal between the USA and the EU which
would mean billions extra trade for the UK.
Yet now he is being forced into a corner by his
own Euro-sceptics and Ukip to legislate
for an in/out referendum in this years parliamentary calendar. It is, of course, something
a Prime Minister cannot do legislate for
what the next government must do. It is why
we have elections after all, to ask the people
what they think should be done now in these
conditions, not to carry on with whatever
policies the previous government has been
pursuing.
DISAGREE
Cameron and others (the Labour Party and
Lib Dems included) give the impression that
they want to be in the EU but are terrified that
the people might disagree. It is high time they
stood up and nailed their colours firmly to the
mast of the ship of state.
At this rate, the UK is heading for total
anonymity. Scotland may well vote for independence next year, and in a referendum a
majority might vote for us to leave the EU. We
shall end up as an over-crowded squabbling
anachronism consisting of England and
Wales and the Six Counties.
The one thing our politicians should remember is that in the council elections only
31 percent of the electorate bothered to turn
out. Of those a quarter voted for Ukip. Lets be
generous and say eight percent of all voters
stuck an X against a party that hates wind
farms, gay marriages, foreign workers and
the European Union.
Now just ask yourself if it is really worthwhile listening to a word that Nigel Farage
says. And why exactly are they all running
scared of him?

PRESIDENT Barack Obama last month

welcomed British Prime Minister David
Cameron to the White House to talk on
subjects ranging from Syrias civil war
to preparations for a coming summit in
Northern Ireland of the worlds leading
industrial nations.
Iran, the Mideast peace process, counterterrorism and trade were topics during
the meeting.
The US and Russia agreed last month
to arrange an international conference to
bring representatives of Syrian President
Bashar Assads government and the opposition to the negotiating table. There is
no date yet, but such talks would focus on
setting up a transitional government.
Syrias civil war has killed at least
70,000 people, according to the UN, and
has forced hundreds of thousands to flee
the country.
Cameron said after a meeting last month
with Russian President Vladimir Putin that
they both agreed that we must help drive
this process.
The Prime Minister also said Britain,
the US, Russia and other countries should

VIGILANCE
Obviously, what we do for the future,
we have to do everything we can to work
with law enforcement agencies to maintain
our vigilance, Cameron said after walking
through the memorial amid tight security.
But, I think, above all, we have to say very
loudly, very proudly, very clearly that we
are proud to live in a country whether it
is America or Britain that is a democracy,
that loves freedom, that loves diversity,
that is a multiracial country and well never
give in to terrorists.
Cameron was in Boston to offer his
condolences and discuss lessons that can
be learned from the bombings. The trip
followed a White House visit during which
the prime minister met with President
Barack Obama.

PRIME MINISTER David Cameron visited an impromptu memorial that sprang up
near the site of the Boston Marathon bombings, striking a combative tone May 14
in saying that democratic and multiracial
countries like the United States and Britain
will never give in to terrorists who feed
on the poisonous narrative of violence,
extremism and victimhood.
Cameron was accompanied by Massachusetts Gov Deval Patrick when he visited the makeshift memorial that includes
T-shirts, letters, running shoes and other
items in the citys Copley Square. The
memorial grew in the wake of the April
15 explosions at the marathon finish line
that killed three people and injured more
than 260.
The United Kingdom, Cameron said,
has experienced that sort of terrorism in

Underwater German WWII

Bomber To Be Salvaged
By Gregory Katz
A FAMOUS German WWII bomber has
spent decades submerged in the English
Channel but thats about to change.
British officials last month announced
a complex salvage operation to rescue
the only known surviving example of the
German Dornier Do 17 bomber, an aircraft
nicknamed the flying pencil because of
its narrow fuselage.
The wreck is located just off the Kent
coast in southeast England in about 60
feet of water. The plane had been shot
down during the 1940 Battle of Britain,
a monthslong struggle over the skies of
Britain that saw RAF fighters engaged in
a colossal life-or-death struggle with the
German Luftwaffe.
Experts said the bomber, discovered
by divers five years ago, is remarkably
undamaged despite the passage of time.
Officials at the RAF Museum in London said the challenging salvage will be
the biggest recovery of its kind and they
hope to one day display the bomber at the
museum.
Museum director Peter Dye said the
bomber will be exhibited next to a Hawker
Hurricane fighter that had also been shot
down during the Battle of Britain.
We feel its important that they be
exhibited side by side, he said, pointing
out that two German airmen died in the
Dornier. With time, we recognize that

The Suns Politics Editor

Charged Over Bribery
BRITAINS prosecutors say The Sun
tabloids politics editor Clodagh Hartley
has been charged over a conspiracy to
pay thousands of pounds worth of bribes
to a press officer working in the British
governments tax department.
Prosecutors say The Sun paid bribes to
press officer Jonathan Hall in return for
information about unannounced spending
plans, deficit reduction work, and policy
decisions. Hall, 51, was also charged in
relation to the payments.
Hartley, 38, was arrested last year as
part of a sprawling bribery probe linked
to Britains phone hacking scandal. The
investigation has already ensnared some
of The Suns most senior staffers.
The Suns executive editor, its deputy
editor, its defense editor, and its former
chief reporter all face charges. So does
The Suns former editor, Rebekah Brooks.

Britain Holding Off On

Media Regulation Plans
BRITISH OFFICIALS are holding off on
plans for a state-backed media watchdog,
the first sign that opposition from the
newspaper industry is slowing down efforts to more closely regulate the countrys
scandal-tainted press.
Prime Minister David Camerons office said last month it was temporarily
delaying the presentation of its plan for a
new, government-backed regulator to give
officials more time to examine an alternative proposal being floated by Britains
newspaper industry.
The question of how best to police the
UK press has been debated since the phone
hacking scandal erupted in 2011, exposing
a culture of breaking laws, corruption and
cover-up at the highest levels of British
journalism.
Politicians have endorsed tighter regulation, but newspapers are resisting it by
promoting their own, more media-friendly
plan.

Police Identify Man

Whose Body Found
In Chimney
A CORONER is being asked to decide
why a man was in the chimney of a law
firm where he was found dead.
Police in Derbyshire refused to comment last month on speculation that
42-year-old Kevin Gough got stuck during
an attempted burglary. Police indicated,
however, that there was no suspicion that
anyone else was responsible for the death.
The coroners inquest was opening later
in the day in Derby, near Manchester.
The body was found last month during
remodeling work at Moody & Woolley
Solicitors. The man apparently had died
several weeks ago.
Martina Longworth, a partner at the law
firm, said our sympathy goes out to the
man and his family and friends.

young men died on both sides, which is
why we dont intend to restore it. We
will conserve it and place it on exhibition
alongside the wreck of a Hurricane shot
down at much the same time in which a
British pilot died.
Plans call for the plane to be lifted out of
the water in three or four weeks if preparations go well. But Dye cautioned that the
recovery would be dangerous divers will
only be able to work for 45 minutes at a
time, among other challenges.
We are not guaranteed success, he said.
There have been previous aircraft recovery
projects that didnt go so well, cases where
the structure has disintegrated on retrieval.
When it breaks the surface, gravity and
the laws of mechanics come into play, so
we very much hope the frame weve constructed will support that structure.
Corrosion is another obstacle that could
spoil the procedure, he said.

Phil continues to limit Lolas access to
Lexi til one afternoon when she pops in for an
unannounced visit and Phil reluctantly lets her
see her daughter, and she catches that Lexi is
seriously ill and needs an ambulance. While
Phil, at first, thinks theres nothing wrong, and
then has no idea what to do, Lola jumps into
action, impressing everyone, EMS, doctors,
The Social, and Phil. The result: Lola is now
allowed more access even overnight visits
and Phil agrees...
Max is having trouble with Kirsty, who is
whiney and jealous of the bond that Max has
with Tanya, the mother of his children, so she
blurts out that she is pregnant, thinking that will
get his attention but he only wants her to get
an abortion. On the way to get that abortion
she confides to Kat that she lied she isnt
pregnant at all. And before she can go to get
her fake abortion Max tells her he wants to
keep the baby, and Kirsty announces to the Vic

that she and Max are having a baby. Well, this

isnt going to end well. And from the look on
Kats face, we know shes thinking the same
thing we are. We remember when Zoe pulled
the same thing on Dennis (and look how well
THAT turned out!)...
Across the Square Ian and Denise are
still a couple and as a result Denise is dealing
with the regular snickers of allWe are worried about Tracy: She is back working on the
flower stall during the day and the Vic at night
(when does she sleep?) Lauren continues
to lurch around the Square drunk, with a bit
of help from Lucy who spikes her lemonade
when she IS actually trying to be sober, and
Joey is getting sick of it (just as Lucy had
hoped)
Now that Liam has got mixed up with the
gang, he cant get out. It doesnt matter that
they stabbed him and put him in hospital and
he finally saw the light and testified to get
them arrested. They have been bailed and
are harassing him and he is afraid to leave
the house and now they are going after little
Tiffany to get to him...
At Michaels house theres a knock at the
door and, SURPRISE!, its Janine! Shes back
and she wants her baby and her old life back.
Before she left, seven months ago, she was
in such a post-partum state that Michael had
manipulated her into thinking that she would
destroy her daughters life. That is why she
left, but now shes back to her old self and it
seems theres nothing Michael can do to stop

her (even though everyone suddenly thinks he

is a saint)...
As their wedding day gets closer, like an
oncoming train, Sharon still has a thing for Phil,
and now Jack is getting contacted by Ronnie
(who is about to be released from prison).
Ronnie is also contacting Roxy, who is keeping
it a secret from Alfie. But one disaster at a time:
After he goes to visit Ronnie, Jack realizes
that he doesnt love Sharon the way he loved
Ronnie so as she walks up the aisle toward
him, all dressed in black, he says sorry, I cant
marry you. What does Sharon do? Exactly
what Angie woulda done: She slaps on a fake
smile and tells their guests that the party will
go on. Now shes back with Phil and Jack has
taken a break from Walford, while little Denny
is confused. So are we Denny!

SYLVIA GETS a call from an old friend in a

care home, called Dorothy. Thats the friend,
not the care home. Dorothy moves rooms in
the care home and finds an unopened letter
addressed to Sylvia from December 2011. The
letters from Roys dad, St John which I think
is pronounced Sinjun, like Injun. Back home,
Hayley cant understand why Sylvia lies to Roy
about the letter and begs Sylvia to let Roy read
the letter to give him some closure about his
dad. Dont you go all middle-class words on
me! Sylvia warns her daughter-in-law. As this
is soap, the letter contents will come out and
not before too long and Roy may indeed get
closure of a kind which might make up for him
having to increase the price of hot drinks in the
caf by 10p. I know, its shocking.
Over at Eileens its happy families as
fireman Paul returns safely to the fold and
Eileens bosom, asks Jason to be his best
man and phones Todd in London to book a
weekend there for him and Eileen to see a
musical, have dinner and visit her other son.
At Barlows Bookies, Peters got a face like
a wet weekend after Rob has the place tarted
up to attract new business. He even installs
a new coffee machine, which goes down
well with the punters, but not with Roy at the
caf whos upset this new gadget, giving
out coffee for free, will steal his customers
away. Rob tries to wheel and deal behind the
counter of the betting shop and Peter remains
patient, for now, but itll all blow up soon and
the quicker it all comes down on Robs head,
the better. Hes the dullest man in soap and
no mistake. Over tea at the Barlows where

Deirdre cooks coq-au-vin from scratch (was

that the chickens name?) and tries to pass
off a Freshco chocolate cake as her own,
Rob rubs Ken up the wrong way too. He
takes Peter to one side in the kitchen and
whispers: You know who he reminds me
of? to which theres a pause, a beat before
Ken dares speak the name of his nemesis
again: Mike Baldwin! All mouth, no trousers
and an ego the size of Salford.
Speaking of dull, Stella cant pay Owen for
work done on the Rovers as her insurance
wont pay. Owens not best pleased, as you
can imagine and tries to wreck the place to
get his fixtures and fittings back. Long story
cut short Stella offers Owen half the pub in
payment. But which half, the Rovers or the
Return? She also says yes to Karls proposal
of marriage, second time around.
As Dev does his grieving over dead wife
Sunita, Mary mothers the kids and smothers
Dev. She treats me like the third twin, he
complains but he cant deny shes doing a
great job with his kids and they like her a
lot, even if she is, you know, a bit too much
Mary at times.
Elsewhere, Faye tells headmaster Brian
that Annas been hitting her. She hasnt, of
course, its just Fayes devious way of getting
herself removed from Annas care and into
her dad Tims flat. And it works, that is, after
Annas questioned by the child protection
team, Fayes been outed as a liar and Tim
gets to look after his daughter 24/7 which is
probably 22/7 more than he actually wants.
And finally this month Izzys not happy
that Garys spending so much time with
Tina instead of with her. Oh dearie me, Izzy,
just wait and see what he gets up to with
Tina next week.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

The Downside Of Keeping Business

Connections With The UK
AFTER MONTHS of my badgering, I hope
you are aware your UK bank accounts,
investment accounts, pensions and other
financial assets must be included in the
information filing you are required to do as
part of the fun of being US taxpayers. One
group of assets I havent yet mentioned
is shares in a UK family company. This
sort of company often has relatively few
shareholders, and a small number of them
can often control the company, in the sense
of making decisions for it.
Sometimes smaller companies do not
pay dividends, so there is no income for
you to declare. Its then easy to forget
you own the shares or realize they may be
the type of investment the IRS would be
interested in. This would be unfortunate!
As I hope you have realized by now, the
IRS interest extends beyond simply those
foreign assets you receive income from,
although it is certainly interested in those
as well!
If you have shares in a company like this
(and you remembered about them!), you
would include details about them on Form
8938 (the one that was first required with
2011 tax returns). You would have to complete Part II of the form, including (amongst
other things) the number and type of your
shares, an approximate valuation and the
name and address of the corporation.
Unfortunately, that may not be the right
thing to have done! There is yet another
IRS form, 5471, you may need to complete
each year instead of form 8938. And if
you are thinking, well one form instead
of another, how bad can that be, it just
means you havent seen form 5471! The
basic form is four pages (although there
are extra schedules) and they involve

translating a set of UK company accounts

into a US format. This is time-consuming
and detailed work, but worse may follow!
There are circumstances when you can
be taxed in the US on the income of a
foreign corporation, even though none of
it has been paid out to you in the form of
dividends or salary. This will not happen in
all cases, but as you can imagine, its not
welcome news if it applies to you.
There are also circumstances when
you may have to file the form if you are an
officer or director in certain foreign corporations, so it is not always necessary to
be a shareholder. The form even needs to
be filed for dormant companies, although
it is then only one page. The penalties for
not filing are at the excessive level the IRS
loves to use.
There is no doubt some people will
be picked out for IRS correspondence or
worse because they have included assets
on form 8938 that should have been filed
on other forms. This is a situation we want
to avoid if at all possible. It may be this is
one of the greatest advantages of form
8938 to the IRS.
To avoid this, taxpayers have to be
aware of the tax filing implications of the
various foreign assets they own. Advisers
are unlikely to ask sufficiently open-ended
questions to cover all eventualities, so all
previous UK-residents need to know what
information to be offering.

IT IS NOT the first time a new Jaguar sports

car has been touted as the pure successor
to the legendary E-type nor will it be the last,
I fancy. Certainly, the name of this new Jag
suggests that the intention was there. In
previous times the XJS, XK8 and XKR have
all been touted as the legends successor,
they werent, and nor will this new F-type.
Lets face it, a legendary car comes about
very rarely. Sometimes a little luck and even
accidental nuances play alongside a masterful design effort to elevate a model into a
legendary status.
Enzo Ferrari called the E-type Jaguar the
most beautiful car ever designed and he was
right at that time. To match that accolade
today is almost impossible and yet it is, and
should be, the aim to reach for and I congratulate the design staff at Jaguar for trying.
There is no getting around it, this new F-type
Jaguar is a great looking sports car for this
day and age. They didnt try any E-type retro
styling thank God, somehow though it doesnt
look much like a Jaguar at first glance except
for the leaping cat emblem, maybe Im a bit
old fashioned but I like to see a bit of chrome
on these modern day styled motor cars.
Jaguar lost their identity a long time ago
inasmuch as one has to read the name on
their new model cars to distinguish it from
another make. There is no characteristic face
on the Jaguars anymore, and they need one.
For the sports car, the flagship car of the
Jaguar marque, they also are in need of some
racing heritage, meaning the E type didnt just
come about, it was derived from the racing
heritage and success of the legendary C
and D-types. Success on the worlds racing

June 2013

2014 F-Type Jag

circuits was priority at Jaguar back in the 50s
and 60s when Mike Hawthorns and Ivor
Buebs D-type Jaguar took the checkered flag
at Le Mans in 1955 a resultant derivative of
this magnificent D-type racing Jaguar for road
use became a possibility. Then, when the Dtype repeated the Le Mans success in 1956
& 1957 the derivative E-type was inevitable,
and its subsequent success assured.
Other car manufacturers had witnessed
for themselves that success on the track was
meaning success in the marketplace. Jaguar
learned this earlier when the XK120 took Le
Mans in 1951. The new 2013 F-type Jaguar
has no such heritage and very little visual
characteristic to turn ones head, so basically,
the car needs to stand by its own merit and
carve out its own character. The recognizable
face of a particular brand of automobile is
usually the radiator grille. The horizontally
oriented oval grill with the bumper striped
across it on the E-type was not continued
on its successor, the XJS, and then it sort of
reappeared years later on the XK8 and XKR
some with a chrome bumperish stripe and
some without. It has somewhat disappeared
again on this new F-type leaving it without
any familiar character. I feel like one should
be able to recognize a brand new designed

Jaguar just by its characteristic look, similar

to how one can recognize an Aston Martin.
The Director of Styling at Jaguar, Ian Callum knows this as it was he who styled the
Aston Martin DB7. For me, as good a looker
as this faceless F-type is, I dont think its
enough. It might sell OK though especially
in the emerging Chinese market in which
Tata Motors, Jaguars parent company have
focused. British motorists will buy their fair
share too as the Brits have always been
favorable to Jaguars, more for nostalgia
than anything else I think. As for sales in
other markets, well, only time will tell. There
are three different versions to choose from,
The basic F-type which has a 340hp 3-litre
V6 engine, the F-type S which is a 380hp
version of the 3-litre V6 and a F-type V8 S
which boasts a 495hp 5-litre V8 and is capable of going from zero to 60mph in only 4.2
seconds. All three models are supercharged.
They are available only as a soft top roadster

for 2014, but a coupe version is planned for

the future I believe.
Interior-wise, Jaguar have always been
good in this department with their Connolly
leather etc. It is difficult to get away from the
mundane interior design in modern-day motor cars today, maybe we, the car buying public, have been somewhat brainwashed into
believing into what we should, and what we
shouldnt have on our motor cars. Any new
worthwhile innovation is quickly duplicated
even on other manufactures bread-and-butter
model cars. Variable mood or ambient interior
lighting has been around for some time now
but (and maybe Im wrong on this) but variable colored instrument lighting is something
I myself would like to see. Large touch screen
LCD monitors are pretty standard nowadays
and most people want them, personally I hate
them but the F-type has one.
I cant help thinking how marvelous the
cockpit of an E-type Jag looked, it never
failed to impress any new passenger who
happened along for a ride, Wow, how fast
will this bloody thing go (or some such sort
was a typical remark).
So there you have it, or first impressions at
least, its billed as the first Jaguar sports car
since the E-type, the inbetween others now
being referred to as sports grand tourers.
Does this read like I am being a little harsh in
my first impressions? Perhaps so, but Im a
Jag lover, I have owned quite a few of them
and have probably sat behind the wheel of
a Jaguar more often than I sat behind the
wheel of all other cars combined. I want a
new sports Jag, I just wish it was race proven
and looked like it could blow any other car
away from both the outside and inside, and
unmistakably . . . look like a Jag. Maybe this
will grow on me though, Ill wait and see.
Happy Motoring.

Comedian Jimmy
Tarbuck Arrested
BRITISH media say comedian Jimmy
Tarbuck was arrested and questioned about alleged child abuse
the latest in a
long list of British entertainers
to face sex crime
allegations.
The BBC, the
Press Association and others say
73-year-old Tarbuck was arrested April
26 and later released on bail.
Police in Britain dont usually
name suspects who have not been
charged. North Yorkshire Police said
a 73-year-old man has been arrested
in connection with a historic child sex
abuse investigation.
The force said the alleged victim was
a young boy in the 1970s.
A comedian and quiz-show host,
Tarbuck has been a fixture on British
television since the 1960s.
The arrest is not part of Operation
Yewtree, the sex abuse investigation
centering on late entertainer Jimmy
Saville.

OBITUARIES

Paul Shane,
Hi-deHi! Actor
PAUL SHANE, 72, the actor, has died
following a short illness, his agent has said.
The star of the 80s BBC sitcom Hi-deHi! was surrounded by friends and family
in a hospice in his home town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
Shane played holiday camp host Ted
Bovis in Hi-de-Hi!, but also starred in
You Rang MLord and Oh, Dr Beeching!
His role in the fictional Maplins holiday
camp saw him regularly trying to scam
holiday-makers out of money.
He starred alongside Su Pollard, who
played chalet maid Peggy Ollerenshaw,
and Ruth Madoc, who played chief yellow
coat Gladys Pugh.
The show, set in 1959, was inspired by
the experiences of co-creator Jimmy Perry,
who worked in Butlins after the war.
It ran for eight series between 1980
and 1988 and also launched Hi-de-Hi! as
a catchphrase.
Linda Kremer, Shanes agent for 15
years, said: Paul Shane was a consum-

mate professional, a
true gentleman, a good
friend, and a joy to
work with.
He didnt suffer
fools, always maintained his sense of humour, never stinted on the time he gave
to his fans.
He lightened my life and Ill miss him
enormously.
Shane was a coal miner before starting
out as a cabaret act touring working mens
clubs in the 1960s.
In his later career he appeared in Emmerdale as Solomon Dingle, as well as
having parts in Holby City, Doctors,
Coronation Street and A Touch Of Frost.
He is survived by three daughters and
six grandchildren. His wife Dory died
in 2001.
Tributes to the actor have been appearing on Twitter, with comedian Ricky
Gervais calling him an old school Britcom
hero.
Actress Lisa Riley tweeted: RIP Paul

UK, Denmark Eye Visas

For Afghan Interpreters
By Sylvia Hui
BRITAIN and Denmark proposed last
month to give hundreds of Afghan interpreters who worked alongside their troops
the right to settle in the UK and Denmark
in recognition of the risks they face if they
stay in their war-battered homeland.
The plans were welcomed by activists
in Britain who had argued the UK was
turning its back on Afghan interpreters and
giving them a worse deal than Iraqis who
had worked with British forces.
Britain, which contributes the secondlargest number of troops to NATOs
operation in Afghanistan after the US, is
preparing to end its combat role there by
the end of 2014. Prominent lawmakers
and activists have called for Afghan interpreters to be offered settlement options
and criticized the British government for
failing to address or account for Taliban
reprisals and other dangers.
CLEAR
The prime minister has been very clear
that we should not turn our backs on those
who have trod the same path as our soldiers
in Helmand, consistently putting their lives
at risk to help our troops achieve their
mission, a statement from Prime Minister
David Camerons office at Downing Street
said last month, referring to the volatile
southern Helmand province.
The proposals would allow about 600
interpreters who have worked on the front
lines in Afghanistan for more than a year
to relocate to Britain on a five-year visa.
Those who do not meet the requirement
will get a training and education package
with the Afghan security forces and wages
equivalent to their current salary, or be
given 18 months salary.
These proposals give them a choice:
The opportunity to go on working in
Afghanistan, learning new skills and to
go on rebuilding their country, or to come
and make a new start in Britain, Downing
Street said.
CHANGE
The statement appeared to signal a
change of heart by Cameron, who earlier last month told reporters he believed
most Afghan interpreters should stay in
their country to help rebuild after years
of conflict.
Those remarks hit a nerve in Britain,
coming as tens of thousands of people
signed a petition urging immediate asylum

Church Of Scotland Votes

To Allow Gay Ministers
SENIOR MEMBERS of the Church of
Scotland have voted to let some congregations have openly gay ministers, a
compromise first step that could lead to
the church allowing gay clergy.
The churchs General Assembly backed
a motion affirming a traditional conservative view on homosexuality, but permitted
liberal congregations to opt out if they
wish to ordain gay men or women.
The assembly vote would require the
approval of next years General Assembly
as well as votes by the churchs regional
presbyteries to become law. The process is
expected to take at least two years.
Last months decision came after a
lengthy debate on the issue, which has
divided the church of about 400,000
members for years.

for Afghan translators and as lawyers for

Afghan interpreters launched a legal bid
challenging the UK governments decision not to give them the same assistance
awarded to Iraqi interpreters.
Iraqis who qualified for assistance were
eligible for a one-time package of financial
assistance or exceptional indefinite leave
to enter the UK, outside normal immigration rules.
CONCERNS
Some welcomed Britains move though
others raised concerns that many interpreters who do not qualify for the plans may
be left in danger.
Rosa Curling, a lawyer representing
three Afghan interpreters who launched
a court case on the issue, called the announcement a step in the right direction
but said limiting the offer to front-line
staff would offer no protection to Afghan
translators who dont meet that criteria.
These interpreters remain at risk from
threats from the Taliban and to refuse them
access to the same resettlement options
would be unacceptable, she said.
Officials in Denmark, which deploys
forces to Afghanistan under British command, also announced similar proposals
last month. Afghans who worked as
interpreters for Danish forces in Helmand
would be granted visas to Denmark, where
they can apply for asylum, Defense Minister Nick Haekkerup said.
We do not have a judicial responsibility but a moral obligation to help, Haekkerup said.
The minister had no estimate of how
many Afghans would be affected.
Denmark is due to pull out of combat
operations in Afghanistan in August, leaving 300 soldiers to train Afghan forces.

Bank Of England
Sees Modest,
Sustained Recovery
By Danica Kirka
THE BANK of England predicted a modest and sustained economic recovery for
Britain last month, but tempered hope that
the worst might be over with predictions
that inflation will remain above its targets
for the next two years.
In presenting the central banks quarterly inflation report, Governor Mervyn
King offered a twinkling of optimism that
good things might be in store for a country
struggling to get back on track after the
2008 financial crisis. It has been in recession twice since then.
This hasnt been a typical recession
and it wont be a typical recovery, King
said at a press conference to explain the
reports findings. Nevertheless, a recovery is in sight.
The cautiously more cheerful outlook
gave King, who will step down as governor
in July after 10 years, a chance to deliver
his final inflation report with a bit of good
news after a tenure marred by global economic gloom.
King has presented 82 inflation reports
since joining the central bank 20 years ago
first as chief economist, then as deputy
governor and finally as governor. He will
be replaced by Mark Carney, now head of
the Bank of Canada.

British Inflation Eases

By More Than Expected
OFFICIAL figures show that consumer price inflation in Britain eased
in April, largely on the back of lower
fuel prices and airfares.
The Office for National Statistics
said May 21 that the annual rate fell to
2.4 percent in April from 2.8 percent
the previous month. The fall was bigger than anticipated the consensus
in the markets was for a more modest
fall to 2.6 percent.
Inflation nevertheless remains
above the Bank of Englands target
of two percent.
The drop in inflation hit the pound,
as investors speculated that it may
prompt the central bank to enact another monetary stimulus soon.
After the figures were released, the
pound was trading 0.5 percent lower
at $1.5190. Prior to their release, the
pound was trading around the $1.5213
mark.

Anyone can be a Father,

but it takes someone special
to be a Dad
A HAPPY Fathers Day to all you Dads, hope
you get something special other than a tie
does anyone really wear them now?
June is also the official birthday of the
Queen, and the annual Trooping of the
Guard, always loved watching that, but
unfortunately the Queen is unable to attend on horseback as she did for all those
years. She and the Duke of Edinburgh are
taking on fewer things now, which they
should be entitled to at their ages, rather
marvelous though arent they, who cannot
admire their stamina on the Thames boat
trip for her Jubilee.
Well we are officially celebrating the
Queens birthday with our Sarasota British
Club, and are going to have Tea Dance. I
expect we shall all wear hats or fascinators, although I always look a proper
Charley with them! Looking forward to
the event and having a special tea menu
I thought I would feature a special tribute
to the Queens Mum, another beloved
lady, with the Queen Mothers Cake. My
Mum was in the ATS during WW2, (also
my sister in law, Sylvia) and Mum had the
honour of being presented to the Queen
Mum. She commented on how wonderfully
gracious she was, making her feel she was
the only one being visited that day, and
what an incredible complexion the Queen
had with the most brilliant blue eyes.
My best friend Penny, who had the tea
room with me, had a sister, Jane who
loved cooking, and she would often share
recipes with me. Jane knew a former lady
in waiting for the Queen, who apparently
loved to cook, and this recipe is supposedly from her. I know it was always a firm
favourite when we had the tea room, and
is really yummy.
Dont try to substitute for the butter
used, as this really makes the flavour
great, and it freezes well. hope you enjoy

Queen Mothers Cake

3/4 cup chopped dates

1 cup boiling water
1 tsp baking powder
1 cup brown sugar
(Demarara if you can get it!)
4 Tbs butter
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Topping:
2 Tbsp butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 Tbsp cream
my version.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Put dates and baking soda in bowl,
pour over the boiling water, and set aside.
Cream sugar butter, beat in egg, vanilla,
baking powder and salt. Blend in the flour
and optional nuts. Drain the dates, and stir
in. Mix well, place in 8 square pan, and
bake 20-30 minutes or until done with a
cake tester. Place on a cooling rack.
Place topping ingredients in a saucepan, and bring to boil, boil for three
minutes, stirring all the time (this makes
a lovely fudgy topping) pour over cake,
and let sit until cool. Yield 9-12 servings

RRThis paper reaches the British community in all parts of Florida and, of course, the US

FABULOUS FLORIDA is 500 years old this

year. 2013 commemorates the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the first explorer
(Spaniard Ponce de Leon) who also gave
Florida its name. The year-long celebration,
an initiative by our Governor Rick Scott
features a visit from the King and Queen of
Spain and celebrations, civic and cultural
events, outlined on www.500florida.com
How do I know? There are flapping yellow
and red banners proclaiming such all over
Miami. So Happy Birthday to our Sunshine
State.
n Great news if you fly into Florida from
the UK which is the majority of my readers and your visiting relatives or clients.
Effective May 3, foreign visitors into Miami
International and Orlando Airports enjoyed
a speedier welcome into the US under the
new Global Entry Program. The paper I94
arrival forms required have been eliminated.
Instead of being processed by a passportcontrol agent you run passports and Green
Cards through an automated kiosk. MIA was
chosen for the new system because it is
the fastest-growing airport for international
arrivals and the second busiest gateway
in the country, officials said. Orlando was
included partly due to its high volume of
visitors from the UK to see Mickey. This
streamlining process was introduced to
shorten passport-control lines which have
slowed due to increased security and recent
budgetary sequester cuts affecting airports
in particular. More information at www.

Ft Lauderdale-based Irishwoman Annette
Counihan, whom I know, is organizing this
event for fellow Floridians (and other expats
from any USA state reading this who wish to

come). She has experienced this fun week

herself and recommends it highly. Featured
on US TV, unattached people from all over
the world gather in the Irish town of Lidoon
Varna to find love and/or have the time of
their lives. Fourth generation Irish matchmaker Willie Daly studies attendees profiles
before they arrive, and arranges matches.
Many marriages and relationships have
resulted from this event, but if you dont find
love, you will still have a brilliant time in Ireland with warm, wonderful people, activities
round the clock, dancing and making merry
till the wee hours. Arrangements: Annette
meets you at Shannon Airport with ground
transport to start your week of seven nights
in a four star hotel with meals, six days of
activities (one day free), seven evenings
of dancing and private meeting with a real
matchmaker. If interested, start by looking
at her website www.cupidscrusade.com to

(Thank you David). No newspaper in the UK
would insult its readers by translating Merci
Davide. First, the international name David
used since the Bible needs no translating
and even if you dont speak French is there
an adult alive who has not heard their term
for thanks? I always notice how American
editors assume a lack of education in its
readers, simplifying vocabulary or overexplaining, which British ones dont. In the
UK writers will use an erudite word or term
to suit their piece. That way you can learn
something new, a better approach.

OBITUARIES

By Cassandra Vinograd
SOME British troops will be serving longer tours of duty as the UK prepares to end
its combat role in Afghanistan, Britains
defense secretary said last month.
Philip Hammond told lawmakers that
Britains combat role will still close by the
end of 2014, but that a brigade deploying
in Afghanistan in October will serve eightmonth tours. A subsequent brigade could
serve a final tour of up to nine months.
Most tours are for six months, but that
has been judged not to be sustainable
during the final months of the drawdown,
the defense secretary said in the House of
Commons.
The arrangements which could affect
up to 3,700 troops will help maintain
continuity during the drawdown and the
handing over of security responsibilities
to Afghan forces. It will also eliminate the
need to deploy another brigade.
ADVICE
The rationale for this decision is clear
and is based on advice from military commanders, Hammond told lawmakers.
Britains role is evolving from engaging
in combat to training, advising and assisting Afghan troops. Afghan security forces
now lead 80 percent of security operations
in most of the country, and Hammond said
last month that will be up to 100 percent
by the summer.
Britain once had about 9,500 military
personnel in Afghanistan. By the end of
this year, that number is expected to fall
to about 5,200.
Those serving extended tours will get
paid extra because they are expected to
face more austere conditions as bases
close and equipment is removed, Hammond said.

Royal Infant On The Way,

But Housing Unclear
By Sylvia Hui
IS IT A BOY? A girl? Prince William and
the former Kate Middleton arent telling,
and palace officials are not revealing where
the royal baby will spend its first few
months, since renovation of their future
home at Kensington Palace is taking longer
than expected.
Williams tour of duty as a searchand-rescue pilot in Wales is scheduled
to wrap up around September, and the
Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as the
pair is formally known, are preparing to
move from an isolated cottage on a Welsh
island to new digs at Kensington Palace in
central London.
But the timing isnt quite right. Major
refurbishment works at the palace likely
wont be finished until at least a month or
two after the infant is born. The baby (and
future monarch) is due in July.
A major relocation can complicate
things for any young parents-to-be, and
William and Kate are no exception, despite
their wealth and prestige.
The couples chosen quarters at the
palace have fallen into disrepair since its
former occupant, Princess Margaret, the
sister of the Queen, died in 2002. Workers
are still upgrading it and getting rid of an
asbestos problem.
TEMPORARY
That means that once the infant arrives,
William and Kate will most likely have
to make do with their current temporary
home in London, a smaller two-bedroom
property also at Kensington Palace.
They could, in theory, bring the baby
back to their cottage in Wales, although
that seems farfetched, given that its 280
miles from London, where the duchess is
expected to give birth.
Palace officials will not comment, saying where the royal couple chooses to stay
is a private matter.
Wherever that may be, come autumn
the new family will be able to move into
their permanent London home, Apartment 1a at Kensington Palace. The name
is misleading: The property is actually a
four-story house with a nursery, 20 rooms
and a private garden.
So what will the royal nursery look like?
While few will ever get a glimpse inside
the room where the future monarch will
grow up, design experts are offering some
suggestions based on experience.

SHOWCASING
Dragons, a small British family business
that was hired by Princess Diana to design
a nursery for William and Prince Harry, is
showcasing a hotel nursery suite that offers
the royal treatment for wealthy commoners from 2,230 a night.
Despite the price, the suite is more
understated than lavish. Theres a crib
adorned with a coronet and delicate
drapes, a luxury miniature play table and
a changing unit, all painstakingly painted
by artisans in soothing, muted shades of
beige and pastels.
We wanted to create a sanctuary
where it feels very safe, very peaceful,
said the companys managing director
Lucinda Croft.
Her firm also designed nurseries for
Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrews
two daughters, Princesses Beatrice and
Eugenie.
Croft would not say whether she is
working with William and Kate on their
nursery, citing the royals privacy concerns. She recalls her mothers shock
when, three decades ago, a tabloid reporter
found out she was working with Diana to
design Williams nursery and called to ask
about the details.
DESIGNING
The late Diana who Croft says was
very hands-on, very involved in designing her nursery lived for many years at
Kensington Palace, where both William
and Prince Harry spent their early years.
Deborah Saunt, a London-based architect who has worked with many wealthy
clients, says the priorities in designing
nurseries are the same no matter the childs
background: lots of natural light and access
to the outdoors. The less elaborate the better, she says and that goes for a future
king or queen as well.
When you design for very young
children its really about trying to imagine
the world through their eyes, creating the
kind of stimulation they need, she said.
Those things dont necessarily cost a lot
of money ... (children) dont care if its
cashmere or cotton.
The child will be third in line to the
British throne after Prince Charles and
William. The royal babys soon-to-begreat-grandmother, 87-year-old Elizabeth
II, is Britains reigning monarch.

BP Withdrawing Some Staff From Tripoli

OIL COMPANY BP says it is temporarily withdrawing some nonessential
and non-Libyan staff from its office in
Libyas capital following similar action
by Britains Foreign Office.
David Nicholas, a BP spokesman, said
the move is a precautionary measure
on advice from the Foreign Office. He
wouldnt say how many staff will be affected but stressed that the Tripoli office
remains open.
The UK Foreign Office said last

month it was temporarily withdrawing

some staff from its embassy in Tripoli
in light of recent political unrest
Militias have stormed and surrounded government buildings in
Tripoli in recent weeks, and rallies to
protest the armed groups have ended
in violence.
BP has a limited presence in Libya,
where it has long-term exploration
contracts but is not currently engaged
in any operations.

Controversial Lord
Ahmed Resigns
From Labour Party
A MEMBER of Britains House of Lords
quit the Labour Party last month, two days
before he was due to face a hearing over
allegations he made anti-Semitic remarks
in a television interview.
Nazir Ahmed was suspended from the
Labour Party in March following a report
that he blamed a Jewish conspiracy for
his 2009 prison sentence for dangerous
driving.
Ahmed had insisted he did not recall
making the alleged comments to an Urdulanguage broadcaster in Pakistan, but was
due to appear before Labours National
Executive Committee on Wednesday
about the accusations.
CONFIRMED
His lawyer Stephen Smith said he did
not think Ahmed would have received a
fair trial from the Labour panel, and the
party confirmed that Ahmed had resigned.
He remains a member of the House of
Lords.
The alleged remarks came to light when
the Times said it had obtained footage of
an Urdu-language TV interview where
Ahmed blamed his 12-week prison sentence on pressure put on courts by Jewishowned media organization.
The controversy came a year after
Ahmed was suspended from the Labour
Party amid reports he offered a bounty for
the capture of President Barack Obama
comments he denied.

Boston Exhibition
Shows British-Owned
Treaty 1763: A
Revolutionary Peace
A NEW exhibition at Old State House,
Boston, features exclusive original British signed copy of Treaty of Paris, never
before shown in North America.
Last month The Bostonian Society
opened a new exhibition, 1763: A Revolutionary Peace, exploring the history and
significance of an epoch-making peace
on the occasion of its 250th anniversary.
Britains original signed copy of the 1763
Treaty of Paris, which forever redrew
the geo-political boundaries of European
North America, is the featured object of
the exhibition, and has never been seen
on the North America continent until now.
On February 10, 1763, the Treaty of Paris
was signed, putting an end to the seven
year war. Celebratory fireworks exploded
in the night sky over London and Paris. In
Boston, a great crowd gathered beneath
the balcony of the Old State House to hear
peace officially proclaimed
Belonging to the British United Kingdom, the Treaty on display at the Old State
House is one of three manuscript treaty
texts signed by representatives of Britain,
France, and Spain. The exhibition has been
on view at the Old State House from May
25, and will run until October 7.

Mud, Sweat
And Tears
By Bear Grylls

AS A book reviewer for the Union Jack, I finds

books to review in unexpected places. Last
April while attending the NBC TV Summer
Preview day in Pasadena I got to meet the
one and only Man vs Wild Bear Grylls. He was
there to promote his latest TV series which
is airing this summer on channel 4 here in
the US. As well his latest book was the in the
oversize goodie gift bag for the press. I didnt
know he was an author of several books. He
is a multi-faceted individual though many
people just associate him with crazy ways to
survive. Edward Michael Bear Grylls turns
39 on June 7, yet to look at him is to look
at a fit 25-year-old man. Bears is a British
adventurer writer and television presenter
and he is known for his TV series Man vs
Wild, (Born Survivor in the UK). In July 2009,
Grylls was appointed the youngest-ever Chief
Scout at the age of 35. His autobiography is
a captivating read and a great gift to share.
He touches base on the many aspects of his
life and his insights. He is as charismatic in
person as he is on screen.
Grylls first book, Facing Up (UK) / The
Kid Who Climbed Everest (US), described
his expedition and achievements climbing to
the summit of Mount Everest. It went into the
UK top 10 best-seller list. Grylls second book
Facing the Frozen Ocean was shortlisted for
the William Ham Sports Book of the Year
Award 2004. His third book Born Survivor:
Bear Grylls was written to accompany the TV
series of the same name. It features survival
skills learned from some of the worlds most
hostile places. This book reached the Sunday
Times Top 10 best-seller list. He wrote an
extreme guide to outdoor pursuits, titled Bear
Grylls Outdoor Adventures. In 2011, Grylls
released his autobiography Mud, Sweat and
Tears: The Autobiography, followed by A
Survival Guide for Life in late 2012.
Grylls grew up in Donaghadee in County
Down, NI until the age of four when his family
moved to Bembridge on the Isle of Wight.
He is the son of the late Conservative Party
politician Sir Michael Grylls and Lady Sarah
Grylls. Lady Grylls was the daughter of Patricia
Ford, briefly an Ulster Unionist Party MP, and
cricketer/businessman Neville Ford. Grylls
has one sibling, an elder sister, Lara Fawcett,
a cardio-tennis coach, who gave him the
nickname Bear when he was a week old.
Grylls was educated at Eaton House,
Ludgrove School, Eton College, where he
helped start its first mountaineering club and
Birbeck, University of London, School of Continuing Education (aka the Faculty of Lifelong
Learning) where he graduated with a degree,
obtained part-time, in Hispanic studies in
2002. From an early age, he learned to climb
and sail from his father, who was a member
of the prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron. As
a teenager, he learned to skydive and earned
a second dan black belt in Shotokan karate.
He practices yoga and ninjutsu. At age eight

he became a Cub Scout. He speaks English,

Spanish, and French. Grylls is a Christian, describing his faith as the backbone in his life.
After leaving school, Grylls considered
joining the Indian Army and hiked in the
Himalayan mountains of Sikkim. Grylls joined
the Territorial Army and served part-time with
the Artists Rifles 21 Regiment, 21 SAS(R),
for three years until 1996.
In 1996, he suffered a freefall parachuting
accident in Zambia. His canopy ripped at
4,900 metres (16,000 ft), partially opening,
causing him to fall and land on his parachute
pack on his back, which partially crushed three
vertebrae. Grylls later said: I should have cut
the main parachute and gone to the reserve
but thought there was time to resolve the
problem. According to his surgeon,
Grylls came within
a whisker of being
paralysed for life
and at first it was
questionable whether he would ever
walk again. Grylls
spent the next 12
months in and out
of military rehabilitation at Headley Court before being discharged
from his medical treatment and directing his
efforts into trying to get well enough to fulfil his
childhood dream of climbing Mount Everest.
His incredible achievements are well documented on film for future personal exploration.
Grylls married Shara Grylls (ne Cannings
Knight) in 2000. They have three sons: Jesse,
Marmaduke, and Huckleberry. A family on
the move, they live in a house boat on the
Thames River.

Grylls is an ambassador for The Princes Trust, an

organisation which provides training, financial, and
practical support to young people in the UK. He is VP
for The JoLt Trust, a small charity that takes disabled,
disadvantaged, abused or neglected young people on
challenging month-long expeditions.
Global Angels, a UK charity which seeks to aid
children around the world, were the beneficiaries of his
2007 accomplishment of taking a powered para-glider
higher than Mount Everest. Gryllss held the highest
ever dinner party at 7,600 metres (25,000 ft) in aid of
The Duke of Edinburghs Award Scheme, and launched
the 50th anniversary of the Awards. His successful
circumnavigation of Britain on jet skis raised money for
the Royal National Lifeboard Institution. Grylls Everest
climb was in aid of SSAFA Forces Help, a British-based
charitable organisation set up to help former and serving
members of the British Armed Forces and their families
and dependents. His 2003 Arctic expedition detailed in
the book Facing The Frozen Ocean was in aid of The
Princes Trust.

New TV Show
Based On Oz
Virginity Auction
FOLLOWING the auctioning of a Brazilian girls virginity last year, the filmmaker
is now promoting a reality TV show based
on the same content.
Australian, Justin Sisely filmed Virgins
Wanted, a documentary film project in
which both a man and a woman auctioned
off their virginity, last year.
Now Sisely is promoting it as a reality TV series, which is set to debut at
an entertainment trade fair in October in
Cannes, France.
It is now a factual series, Sisely told
The Huffington Post. We have signed a
distribution contract with a leading global
multi-national distributor of television
content.
Catarina Migliorini, the female virgin,
reportedly received a winning bid of more
than 500,000 for her virginity from a
Japanese man known as Natsu.
Predictably, her male counterpart, Alex
Stepanov, only received a top bid of about
2,000, from an Australian woman identifying herself as Kasandra Darlinghurst.
Sisely says the project created a huge
amount of interest and he was receiving
at least 50 emails a week from virgins and
potential bidders wanting to be involved
in a follow up.
We have received over 500 videos of
men and women from all over the world
outlining why they should be the next
virgin to auction their virginity, he said.

Gandhis Blood
Sample Fails To
Sell In Britain
DOZENS of Mohandas Gandhis
personal items have been sold at
an auction, but a sample of blood
purportedly from the Indian independence leader didnt draw high
enough bids.
The memorabilia offered by British auction house Mullocks in Ludlow, England, included a handwritten
will, a shawl, a pair of worn leather
sandals and a rice bowl said to come
from the house in India where Gandhi
lived from 1917 to 1934.
One item was described as a bit of
Gandhis blood on two glass microscope slides, said to be provided by
the leader when he was recovering
from an operation for appendicitis
in 1924.
Spokesman Richard WestwoodBrookes said bidding for the blood
didnt meet the 10,000 reserve price.
He said about 50 other items took in
287,000 in the auction.

Irishman Charged
With 1982 IRA
Hyde Park Bombing
A 61-YEAR-OLD Irishman has been
charged with the Irish Republican Army
bombing of the queens ceremonial cavalry in Hyde Park in 1982 that killed four
soldiers and seven horses.
State prosecutors say John Downey was
arrested last month at Gatwick Airport and
was to be arraigned later on four counts
of murder and one count of causing an
explosion.
Nobody has been successfully prosecuted for the IRAs July 20, 1982, twin
bomb attacks on ceremonial troops performing in London.
The IRAs first bomb in Hyde Park was
planted in a parked car and detonated by
remote control. A second that had been
hidden in a bandstand in Regents Park
killed seven army musicians during a
performance.

IMF Calls On Britain To

Do More For Growth
By Danica Kirk
THE INTERNATIONAL Monetary Fund
has called on Britain to do more to support
the economic recovery, urging the government May 22 to speed up investment in
infrastructure and come up with a plan to
privatize its bailed out banks.
In a review of Britains policies, which
had been hotly anticipated after the IMF
last month criticized the governments focus on budget austerity, the IMF applauded
the greater flexibility shown by Treasury
chief George Osborne.
But it warned that more needed to be
done for the economy, saying the government should capitalize on the nascent
signs of momentum to bolster growth.
Infrastructure projects such as building social housing could create jobs and
stimulate economic activity. But that alone
is not enough, given that the economic
downturn has been one of the most prolonged since the Great Depression.
Our view is there is no single silver
bullet, said David Lipton, the IMFs first
deputy managing director and previously a
top economic adviser to President Barack
Obama.
The IMF also urged the government
to develop a clear strategy for two banks
which received government funding to stay
afloat even if it requires another capital
infusion. The government plans to return
the Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds

to private ownership but when and how

remains unclear.
VALUE
Any strategy should seek to return the
banks to private hands in a way that maximizes the value for taxpayers, strengthens
confidence and competition in the sector,
and minimizes outward spillovers, the
IMF said in its statement. In this context,
if a sovereign backstop is required to meet
a capital shortfall, it should be provided.
The IMF made headlines in Britain last
month when it criticized Osbornes plans
to reduce debt quickly, at the expense of
economic growth.
The governments spending cuts and
tax increases in recent years have damped
growth as companies and consumers were
unable to plug the gap left by the retrenching state. That contributed to pushing the
economy into recession twice since 2008.
While the Washington-based IMF last
month called for the government to do
more, the tone of its report was decidedly
less heated than some had predicted.
The assessment came just hours after
minutes to the Bank of Englands last
meeting in May showed policymakers
remain reluctant to offer more monetary
stimulus to the economy.
The IMF noted in its report that inflation
was easing, which should allow the Bank
of Englands policies which it described
as vigorous and appropriate to remain
accommodative for the time being.

Brookss Ex-Bodyguard Charged

In UK Hacking Probe
A MAN who provided protection for
the former chief executive of News International has been charged in relation
to Britains wide-ranging phone-hacking
investigation, British authorities said
last month.
Scotland Yard said David Johnson,
47, allegedly conspired with Rebekah
Brooks and five others in July 2011

to conceal computers and other items

from officers investigating allegations
of phone hacking and bribery at Rupert
Murdochs News of the World and The
Sun tabloids.
Johnson is charged with conspiracy to
pervert the course of justice. He appeared
at Londons Westminster Magistrates
Court on May 8.

England Scheduled For A Full

Summer Of Cricket

ENGLAND RETURNED home after drawing

the New Zealand series 0-0, with the Kiwis
not far behind them. The sides clashed
again in May ending June 27, but this time
on Englands home turf. The rest of the
English summer will see the eight nation ICC
Champions Trophy, June 6-23, and later,
June 26-September 16, the Australians will
begin the big five Test match, Ashes series.
The Kiwis opened their English tour with a
three day, 107 run win at Derby. New Zealand 289-5 dec and 199-5 dec. Derbyshire
154 and 227. Rain interfered at Grace Road,
Leicester, where the four day match against
the English Lions was drawn. New Zealand
285 (Hamish Rutherford 126). The Lions
444 (Joe Root 179)-7 at close. England won
the first Test at Lords by 170 runs, after the
bowlers tore apart the Kiwis second innings
with still a day left to play. England 232 and
213. New Zealand 207 and 68 all out.
West Indian batsman Chris Gayle, went
into the history books during the India Premier
League T20 series, April 3-May 26. Playing
for the Royal Challengers of Bangalore
against the Pune Warriors, Gayle hit the
faster century in T20 cricket, followed by 175
run total, a record for a 20 over match. Gayle
hit the ton in just 30 deliveries. The IPL appears to have a credibility problem however,
after three players from the Rajasthan Royals
were arrested on spot-fixing allegations and
11 bookies were arrested too. Zimbabwe
drew their short home Test series 1-1 with
Bangladesh. Zimbabwe won the first Test
by 335 runs. Zimbabwe 389 and 227-7 dec.
Bangladesh 134 and 147. Bangladesh won
the second match by 143 runs. Bangladesh
391 and 291-9 dec, Zimbabwe 282 and 257
(Hamilton Masakadza 111 not out).

Murray Injury, Laura Robson

Improving

The Madrid Open, May 3-12, witnessed

Andy Murray take out Florian Mayer of
Germany in his first match, while world
number one Novak Djokovic was eliminated
by a Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria who won
in three sets. The Scot then labored badly
against Gilles Simon of France, before winning in straight sets, while Tomas Berdych
ended Murrays participation in the following
round, by punishing the Britons rather lack
lustre display in three sets. British number
one Laura Robson, who has suffered a
series of first round losses in recent tournaments, parted with her Croatian coach of
just eight months, Zeljko Krajan, before the
start of the Spanish event. She beat Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia in her opening
match, and then prevailed against Agnieszka
Radwanska, the Polish world number four,
6-3, 6-1. It was a milestone for the British
youngster, having beaten some-one in the
top world five for the very first time. The next
round however, the former 2011 French Open
champion Ana Ivanovic, ousted Robson after
a third set decider went in the Serbs favour.
Andy Murray did not have a good 26th
birthday at the Italian Open in Rome, May
11-19, where a back injury forced him to
retire from his opening game with Marcel
Granollers, after the score stood at one set
apiece. Its suspected, that the injury will
force the Scot to miss the French Open.
Laura Robson tangled with the Williams
sisters. She beat Venus Williams 6-3, 6-2,
but lost to Serena, who was coming off

David Lynn came close to winning his

first American tour event, at the Wells Fargo
Championship at Quail Hollow, Charlotte,
NC, May 5. The Stoke-on-Trent resident
finished a stroke better than Phil Mickelson,
two better than Lee Westwood, for an eight
under 280,that put him in a play-off with
Derek Ernst, an American rookie playing in
only his ninth PGA event. The Englishman
unfortunately found the bunker on the first
play-off hole, while Ernst hit the green, and
went on to win.
The Players Championship at Ponte Vedra
Beach, Florida, often referred to as the fifth
Major, concluded May 12, with Tiger Woods
earning his 78th PGA victory. Woods carded
a 13 under 275, two strokes ahead of the
field. Scotlands Martin Laird was the top Brit
finisher, three distant with a ten under 278
Graeme McDowell captured the WorldMatch Play crown at Kavarna, Bulgaria, May
19, beating Thailands Thongchai Jaidee
2-1 in the final. Its very special, cooed the
delighted Northern Irelander.

Ronnie Dominates

Comments about retirement and a lack

of enthusiasm for the game of snooker
have followed Ronnie OSullivan, the reigning world snooker champion, from press
interview to recent press interview. At last
months World Snooker Championships at
the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, April 20-May
6, he dominated the championship however,
retaining his world crown with a 18-12 victory over Barry Hawkins. Its the fifth world
championship for the 37-year-old from
Wordsley in the midlands. Hawkins ranked
14th in the world and in his first major final,
saw the frames slip from him as OSullivans
talent burst over the green felt. OSullivan
dispatched Marcus Campbell (10-4) Ali
Carter (13-8) Stuart Bingham (13-4) and
then Judd Trump 17-11, in the semi-finals.
At the post-championship press conference,
he made no promises to come back next
year and said his future snooker plans were
undecided.

Rugby Union
The rugby season ended with the final
of the European club championship, the
Heineken Cup, May 19, with Toulon beating
Clermont Auvergne 16-15, in an all French
contest. Irish club Leinster, won the Amlin
Challenge Cup the day previous, after a
34-13 victory over Stade Francais. On the
domestic side, the Saracens (77pts) topped
the Aviva Premiership with Leicester runners
up with 74pts. Newcastle won the English
Championship with 98pts, Nottingham was
second with 74pts. Ealing Trailfinders won
Division One. Hull Ionians won Division two
north and Henley, Divison two south. Ayr
are the Scottish Premiership champions
with72pts, three ahead of Gala, while the
Glasgow Hawks won the Scottish National
League title. Pontypridd were well clear at
the top of Wales Principalty Premiership
with 96pts, while Ebbw Vale won the Welsh
Swalec Championship with 123pts.

Boxing ; Big Sheffield Punch-Up

A plethora of fisticuffs erupted at the
Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, late April,
where a full card of contests had boxing
fans full attention. Amir Khan topped the
bill, winning a unanimous decision over Julio
Diaz (40-8-1) of Mexico. The former WBA &
IBF light-welterweight champion (28-3) from
Bolton, fighting in front of British fans for the
first time in two years is looking to reclaim
his throne. Its been five years since an
American held the world heavyweight title, but
an unbeaten 27-year-old from Tuscaloosa,
Alabama, by the name Deontay Wilder (280, all KOs) could change that. The American
forced Audley Harrison into retirement after
a 70 second demolition of the former Olympic
gold medalist. Harrison (31-7), who won
the recent prizefighter contest in February,
got to his feet at the count of ten, but the ref
ruled he was in no fit state to continue. Also
on the under card, was Amir Khans brother
Haroon Khan, making a winning pro-debut
over Staffordshires Brett Fidoe. Olympic
London bronze medalist Anthony Ogogo of
Lowestoft, made his pro-debut too, beating
Kieron Gray in the second round.
Same weekend, Martin Murray had WBC
middleweight champion Sergio Martinez
(51-2-2) down twice at Buenos Aires, in both
the eight and tenth rounds, but the judges still
gave a unanimous decision to the Argentinian. The former unbeaten St Helens pugilist
goes 25-1. He was generally the aggressor
in a fight where home town advantage
proved the ultimate fringe benefit Wladimir
Klitscho (60-3) easily retained his WBA,IBF
and WBO heavyweight titles at Mannheim,

Germany, May 4, with a sixth round stoppage
of the formerly unbeaten, Francesco Pianeta
(29-1). Klitscho had the Italian down in both
fourth and fifth rounds Floyd Mayweather
went to 44-0 at Las Vegas, where a unanimous decision gave him victory over Robert
Querro (31-2).

champion Carl Froch (31-2) delivered a

second defeat to Mikkel Kessler (46-2),
this time at the O2 Arena, London, May 25.
The Nottingham fighter took a unanimous
decision over the Dane in a rather physical
encounter where both men performed at a
furious pace.

Horse Racing & Cycling

Late Sport

Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, prime-minister of the United Arab

Emirates arrived in England to sort out his
Godolphin stables problem, and witnessed
one of his top horses, Dawn Approach, win
the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. The 11-8
favourite won by five lengths, from 150-1
shot, Glory Awaits. Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni, was banned from the sport
for eight years by the British Horseracing
Authority (BHA) after a doping scandal that
shook horseracing fraternity at one of the
biggest and wealthiest stables in the world.
Al Zarooni is appealing the length of the ban,
while Sheik Mohammed seeks to put Saeed
bin Suroor back in charge. Sky Lantern (9-1)
won the 1,000 Guineas, (which was celebrating its 200th running) by half a length from the
previously unbeaten, The Judge.
Chris Froome, the runner up in last years
Tour de France, won the Tour de Romandie in
Switzerland, late April. The 27-year-old lead
Team Sky rider, won five of the six stages,
while a third place finish during the final
stage gave him a 54 second overall winning
advantage.

Wigan Win The Cup

Half a dozen major injuries and eventual

relegation from the Premier League, saw
Wigan, perceived as hardly an equal match
for Manchester City in the FA Cup Final at
Wembley, May 11. But Wigan, who were
playing non-league soccer 35 years ago
and has struggled in the lower reaches of the
Premier League since its promotion from the
Championship eight years ago, shrugged off
the gloomy predictions and won the first major trophy in the clubs history with a 1-0 win
over Manchester City. The Latics displayed
confidence and enthusiasm, never frightened
to push forward, and edged a sky blues side
that struggled for rhythm and cohesion. The
game turned drastically in the 83rd minute,
when Citys Pablo Zabaleta got his marching
orders. As the game neared the end, Wigans
Ben Watson headed the ball directly from a
corner in to the net, leaving the City defense
suitably stunned. Later, Roberto Martinez
glorious achievement would be tempered by
the fact that Wigan will play in the Championship next season, after a 4-1 loss at Arsenal
saw them relegated. City coach Roberto
Mancini, barely had time to get home from
the match, before he was fired.

Playoffs & More

Newport County returned to the Football

League for the first time in 25 years, after
beating Wrexham 2-0, in the Bluesquare
Conference play-off final at Wembley. The
goals came in the last four minutes of regular
time in front of a 16,000 crowd. Spennymoor
Town beat Tunbridge Wells 2-1, to win the
FA Vase, at Wembley. Also at Wembley,
May 19, Yeovil Town beat Brentford 2-1 in
the Division One play-off final. Yeovil were
promoted to the football league ten years ago,
and it will be the first time they have reached
the Championship tier. Earlier, Bradford (who
beat Premier sides Wigan, AstonVilla and
Arsenal to reach the final of the League Cup
where Swansea prevailed 5-0) hit three goals
in the first thirty minutes, to beat Northampton Town 3-0 in the Division two play-off
final. On May 27 Crystal Palace overcame
Watford 1-0 at Wembley to win promotion
to the Premiership.

Late Boxing

Two British boxers made first forays on

the North American continent last month.
Super-middleweight James DeGale (15-1)
ventured to Quebec, where he took out Beijing
gold medalist Sebastien Demers (31-6) in
the second round. Colchester welterweight
Lee Purdy (20-4-1) moved up to a fiercer
class of opponent to fight IBF Champion,
Devon Alexander (25-1) at Atlantic City in a
non-title bout. While he certainly gained from
the experience, his corner pulled him out in
the seventh round IBF super-middleweight

A sellout crowd gathered at Wembley,

for the all-German Champions League Final,
May 25, where a goal with a minute to go, by
Arjen Robben gave Bayern Munich a 2-1 win
over Borussia Dortmund. The following day
at Hampden Park, Celtic won their 36th Scottish Cup with a 3-0 victory over Hibernian.
Gary Hooper got two, while Joe Ledley got
the third ten minutes from time Crystal
Palace will be playing Premier League soccer next season after beating Watford 1-0, in
the Championship play-off final at Wembley,
May 27. Kevin Phillips, put away a penalty
in the 105th minute as the match went in to
extra-time Vincenzo Nibali won the Giro
dItalia, May 4-26, while Mark Cavendish
who won the last two stages came away with
the red points jersey. Cavendish riding for the
Omega Pharma-Quick Step team won five of
the races 21 stages. A chest infection forced
seven time Olympic medalist Sir Bradley
Wiggins, last years winner of the Tour de
France, out by the 14th stage, but fellow Sky
Team member Alex Dowsett did win the time
trial in stage 8.
The county championship mid-May after
some five or six matches completed, has
Sussex on top with 85pts, and Middlesex a
point behind. The top four clubs have won
three of their games so far, including Durham
(78.5pts, and Yorkshire 76pts. Northamptonshire led division two by some 25 pts, after
accumulating 87pts from their five games.

Retirements & Passings

David Beckham hung up his boots last
month, announcing his retirement from a
sport that made him a soccer icon. The
38-year-old midfielder ended his career at
a Paris St Germains home match, May 18.
Teary eyed and emotional he was roundly
applauded by a 40,000 plus crowd and a
couple of dozen family members. In a playing
career spanning over 20 years, he won 19
trophies with Manchester Utd, Real Madrid,
the Los Angeles Galaxy, and a final French
league championship at PSG. He made 115
appearances for England, 58 of them as
captain. Hell be remembered for a number
of awesome nettings. However, many will
remember that spectacular free kick against
Greece in the final seconds of a World Cup
qualify game, that curled round the Greek
defensive wall to give England a 3-2 win, and
qualify for the 2002 World Cup
A lethal yachting accident on San Francisco Bay took the life of British Olympian
Andrew Bart, Simpson. The yachtsman
was with other crew-members of Artemis
Racing, training on a catamaran for the
approaching Americas Cup. The catamaran
tipped and he got caught underneath. Efforts
to revive him proved unsuccessful. Known
affectionately as Bart, he teamed up with
Iain Percy to win the Star class yachting
gold at Beijing, the world Star class championships in 2010, and a silver medal at the
London Olympics. Andrew Simpson from
Sherbourne, Dorset, was 36.
Saturday afternoon wrestling was so
popular on TV in the 1960s & 70s, that retailers in the High Street petitioned broadcasters to reschedule the sport to another time
complaining about lack of shoppers in their
empty stores. Mick McManus was only five
foot six inches, but he was one of the crowd
pulling favourites, and with his belligerent and
nasty disposition he was the man everyone
loved to hate. His feud with rival Jackie Pallo,
saw 20 million TV viewers tune in to see the
pair fight each other live in 1962. The New
Cross Londoner was born William George
Matthews, and started wrestling in the late
1940s, where he became appropriately
skilled with short-arm jabs, half nelsons and
Boston crabs to take advantage of the new
sporting phenomena that was topping the TV
ratings on those distant Saturday afternoons.
Tag-teamed with Steve Logan, his infamous
unpopularity brought in the crowds, and he
was rarely beaten. Mick McManus was 93.

Johnson Hired As Scotlands

Director Of Rugby
SCOTLAND has hired Scott Johnson as
its new director of rugby, with his replacement as national coach set to be named
after this summers tour of South Africa.
Johnson guided the Scots to an impressive third-place finish in the Six Nations
after taking over as interim coach following the departure of Andy Robinson in
November.
Scotland said a worldwide search
to identify a full-time coach is ongoing,
with Johnson taking up a role that is
absolutely integral to Scotlands standing
on the world stage in the next decade and
beyond.
Johnson says I am looking forward to
the challenge of the new role as well as
continuing with the Scotland team.
He will stay in charge for the tour of

Froome To Lead Team Sky

At Tour De France
THE HEAD of Team Sky says Chris
Froome will lead the British outfit at this
years Tour de France, denting Bradley
Wiggins hopes of successfully defending the title.
Team principal Dave Brailsford said
last month that given Chris step up in
performances this year, our plan, as it has
been since January, is to have him lead the
Tour de France team.
Wiggins said early last month that he
was hoping to pull off a rare Giro dItaliaTour de France double this year, having
previously suggested he would play second
fiddle to Froome at the Tour.
Brailsford says the decision process for
this summer will be evidence-based but
it is crucial there is clarity of purpose and
for that reason we will go to the Tour with
one leader.

McDonnell Wins Vacant

IBF Bantamweight Title
JAMIE McDONNELL won the vacant
IBF bantamweight title when he edged
the previously unbeaten Julio Ceja with a
controversial majority decision in his home
ring last month.
The favored Ceja, who entered with a
24-0 record and 22 knockouts, threw meaty
shots throughout the 12 rounds, none better than a left hook to McDonnells chin
in the 11th.
But McDonnell absorbed everything
thrown by the 20-year-old Mexican, and
a strong final round persuaded the judges
to give the local the fight with scores of
114-114, 115-113 and 118-110.
I was actually enjoying it, McDonnell
(21-2-1, 9 KO) said after claiming his first
world title. He had a big record with 22
knockouts but I dug in because I wanted
this belt. I controlled that fight.

June 2013

Arsenal: The Gunners qualified
for the Champions League for a
16th straight season after edging
Newcastle, 1-0, to claim fourth
place. Lucas Podolski got a pair of goals,
including one during a burst of three goals
in eight minutes, in a 4-1 defeat of Wigan.
Theo Walcott (with his 21st goal) and Aaron
Ramsey also scored as the Gunners broke
open a 1-1 tie in the 63rd, 68th, and 71st
minutes. Walcott struck in the first minute at
QPR and the Gunners held on all the way for
a 1-0 win.
Aston Villa: Darren Bent opened
the scoring at Wigan in the fifth minute
and after Villa fell behind, Ron Vlaar
earned a 2-2 tie with a superb volley
on the hour. Gabriel Agbonlahors two secondhalf goals powered Villa to a 2-1 victory at
Norwich City that all but cemented their place
in the Premier League next season.
Chelsea: Juan Mata scored
early and Fernando Torres won
it late as Chelsea concluded the
season by downing Everton, 2-1,
to clinch third place. Frank Lampard broke
Bobby Tamblings all-time club record by
scoring his 202nd and 203rd goals in a 2-1
defeat of Aston Villa, after which he signed a
new contract with the club to play for Jose
Mourinho, most likely, next season.
Everton: After 11 years and
518 matches, David Moyes signed
off as manager in a 2-1 loss at
Chelsea. Tim Howards fumble of
a routine save led to Chelseas opener and
though Steven Naismith equalized Everton
couldnt reply again. Goals in each half by
Kevin Mirallas brought Moyes a victory in his
final game in charge at Goodison Park, a 2-0
triumph over West Ham United.
Fulham: The reeling Cottagers
ended a seven-match winless run
by finishing the season in style, winning 3-0 at Swansea. Alex Kacaniklic, Dimitar Berbatov and Urby Emanuelson
scored to secure 12th place, three spots lower
than they finished last season. Bryan Ruiz
scored twice within a seven-minute span that
also featured a Hugo Rodallega shot off the
crossbar as the Cottagers rallied but fell short
in a 4-2 loss to Reading.
Liverpool: A 1-0 defeat of
relegated Queens Park Rangers
left Liverpool in seventh place and
with 61 points, nine more than
they earned last season but still
in arrears of Merseyside rival Everton. Philippe
Coutinhos goal midway through the second
half ensured that Jamie Carraghers Anfield
farewell would be a winning one: he retires
with 737 club appearances and more than
16 years of service, seventh-highest in club
history. The week before, Daniel Sturridge hit
a hat trick to fuel a rally that downed Fulham,
3-1, on the road.
Manchester City: Jack
Rodwells two equalizers werent
enough to prevent a 3-2 home
loss to Norwich City in the season
finale played with interim manager Brian Kidd
in charge. Roberto Mancini was given the boot
after City lost to Wigan in the FA Cup final,
precisely one year after clinching the 2011-12
Premier League title. Sergio Aguero and Edin
Dzeko scored late in each half in Citys 2-0 win
at Reading in the wake of Mancinis dismissal.
Manchester United: Javier
Hernandez scored Uniteds fifth
goal in the season finale at West

Bromich Albion and that was just enough to

obtain a 5-5 tie, the first such result in Premier
League history. Also hitting the net were Shinji
Kagawa, Alexander Buttner, and Robin van
Persie (plus an own goal). Rio Ferdinands goal
assured that manager Sir Alex Fergusons final
game at Old Trafford would be a winning one.
Ferdinand scored his first goal since 2008 to
edge United past Swansea, 2-1, and after the
final whistle Ferguson lifted the 13th Premier
League championship trophy won by United
since Ferguson took over at United in 1986.
Newcastle: A 1-0 home loss
to Arsenal on the final day of
the season meant a 16th-place
finish. The Magpies put a small
star on an otherwise dim season by avoiding
relegation with a 2-1 defeat of already-down
Queens Park Rangers on the penultimate
weekend of play. Afater falling behind early,
Newcastle assumed command before halftime
with a Hatem Ben Arfa penalty and a Yoan
Gouffran strike.
Norwich City: The Canaries
were singing after a late winner by
Jonathan Howson brought them a
3-2 victory at Manchester City and
11th place. Goals by Anthony Pilkington and
Grant Holt had provided one-goal leads, but
Howsons tally in the 65th minute held up. Norwich closed out the home season at Carrow
Road by hammering West Bromwich Albion,
4-0. Robert Snodgrass set the rout in motion
with the first goal, Holt added a second, and
after an own goal Howson delivered the fourth.
Queens Park Rangers: Loic
Remys penalty kick in the 11th
minute was matched and then
surpassed as QPR fell in the
home finale, 2-1, to Newcastle. The goal broke
a 376-minute goalless streak. Their only point
in the last four matches came when they tied,
0-0, in late April at Reading, with which they
tied for worst goal difference at minus-30.
Reading: Nigel Adkins registered his first victory as Reading
manager in a 4-2 victory at Fulham
sparked by Hal Robson-Kanus
pair of goals. The already-relegated Royals
needed additional goals from Adam Le Fondre
and Jem Karacan and eight saves by Alex
McCarthy to hold off a Fulham rally and claim
their first win since early February.
Southampton: Ricky Lambert
equalized 10 minutes after the
Saints had fallen behind against
Stoke City but they were unable
to ride the momentum of the home crowd to
a second goal and ended up tied, 1-1. After a
goal by Steven Nzonzi in the third minute, the
Saints were under siege at home by Tottenham, which eventually prevailed, 2-1.
Stoke City: Michael Owen came
off the bench in his final game, a 1-1
tie at Southampton in which Peter
Crouchs goal in the 47th minute
was matched 10 minutes later. Owen replaced
Jonathan Walters in the 74th minute to end his
injury-marred career with 362 appearances
and 163 goals. Walters scored in the ninth
minute at Sunderland but despite going up a
man in the 34th minute the Potters could only
manage a 1-1 tie.
Sunderland: The Black Cats
closed out the season with a
1-0 loss at Tottenham after tying Stoke City and Sunderland at
home by 1-1 scores. Those latter results help
explain why Sunderland finished below both
those teams and just above the relegation zone
in 17th place. John OShea scored to rescue

a point against Stoke after Sunderland went

down to 10 men when Craig Gardner was sent
off. Philip Bardsleys equalizer and a great save
by keeper Simon Mignolet in the final minutes
preserved the point against Sunderland.
Swansea City: A 3-0 loss to
Fulham in the season finale didnt
appreciably dampen spirits at the
Liberty Stadium, for the Swans
finished ninth and won the Capital League
Cup. Angel Rangel, Itay Shechter and Dwight
Tiendalli got the goals in a 3-2 victory at Wigan,
and a Michu goal at Old Trafford tied up a
match the Swans lost only in the final minutes.
Tottenham Hotspur: Despite
compiling 10 points from four
matches played in the final 16 days
of the season, Spurs finished short
of a Champions League spot in
fifth. Gareth Bales goal ended 89 minutes of
frustration for Spurs, which squeaked past
Sunderland, 1-0, despite a 35-8 edge in shots.
Clint Dempsey scored with a spectacular
sliding chip and then laid on the winning
goal for Emmanuel Adebayor for a 2-1 Spurs
comeback win against Stoke City.
West Bromwich Albion: After
back-to-back blankings imposed by
Manchester City (1-0) and Norwich
City (4-0), the Baggies exploded for
five goals on the final day of the season to tie
Manchester United in the Premier Leagues
highest-scoring draw. They were trailing,
3-0, when James Morrison scored just before
halftime, and closed to within a goal when
Romelu Lukaku connected five minutes into
the second half. They conceded two more, but
trailing, 5-2, struck three times in six minutes.
Lukaku netted his third goal in the 86th minute
to complete the comeback.
West Ham United: Kevin Nolans hat trick carried the Hammers past relegated Reading, 4-2,
after theyd coughed up a 2-0 lead
supplied by Nolans opener and Ricardo Vaz
Tes goal in the 34th minute. West Ham lost
for the 12th time in 17 away games when it
fell, 2-0, at Everton. That loss mark tied for
second-worst in the Premier League.
Wigan Athletic: The Latics
somehow won more games on
the road (five) than they did at
home (four). Eight years in the top
flight ended with a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa in
which they came back from a 1-0 deficit with a
goal by Emmerson Boyce and an own goal but
couldnt hold on. Relegation had already been
confirmed for the FA Cup winners by losing 4-1
at Arsenal, despite a Shaun Maloney equalizer
just before halftime.

Rio Ferdinand Retires From

International Football

ENGLAND defender Rio Ferdinand has retired

from international football to focus on his
Manchester United career.
Ferdinand was recalled to the England
squad in March by Roy Hodgson after almost
two years out of the national set up.
But Ferdinand provoked the fury of fans
by withdrawing from the squad citing fitness concerns only to fly to the Middle East
to commentate on the World Cup qualifiers.
Ferdinand was annoyed last year with
Hodgson after believing he had been overlooked for a place in the squad for the European Championships amid the fallout from a
case in which his brother was racially abused
by England defender John Terry.
Now, after making 81 appearances, Ferdinands England career appears to be ending
more amicably.

Wolves Fire Saunders After

Relegation To Third Tier

WOLVERHAMPTON Wanderers has reacted

to its demotion to English footballs third tier
by firing manager Dean Saunders.
The club in central England was playing
in the Premier League last season but has
slipped to back-to-back relegations.
Saunders, a former Wales and Liverpool
striker, became Wolves fourth manager in
12 months when he was hired in January
but couldnt halt the teams slide down the
League Championship standings. It finished
next-to-last after a 2-0 loss at Brighton in its
final match.

OLeary Receives Compensation

After Al Ahli Firing

FORMER Ireland defender David OLeary

will receive compensation of $5.2m from Al
Ahli after a legal battle with the Dubai club
following his firing in 2011.
OLeary took the case to FIFA after he was
fired 12 months into a three-year contract,
with Al Ahli claiming he abandoned his job.
Al Ahli said in a statement that it would
appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport,
calling the FIFA ruling unfair and contrary to
the actual events which occurred.

WARREN GATLAND saw red when he selected

the squad to go Down Under this month. There
were a number of controversial choices, none
more so than taking Sam Warburton to captain
the team. Warburton was widely tipped to assume the role this time last year as captain of
the Grand Slam champions Wales. Since then,
English fortunes have dramatically improved
even to the point of beating the All Blacks in
the autumn series.
At that point no-one could see past Englands leader, Chris Robshaw.
It all changed on March 16 this year in Cardiff when Wales beat England 30-3. That was a
game where Warburton could have captained
Wales but he stood aside to give the responsibility to Gethin Jenkins. Robshaw lost out.
First he was overlooked for the Lions squad
then he was even rested by Stuart Lancaster
for Englands tour of Argentina. Gatland has
promised him that he will be called up in the
event of injury.
The full squad below shows the rewards
of Six Nations success with Wales literally
getting the lions share of the spoils. They are
represented by a full side with ironically only a
fly half traditionally the strongest of Waless
contributions to Lions sides. There are in fact
only two fly halves: Johnny Sexton and Owen
Farrell will contest the spot. Scotlands Stuart
Hogg is normally a fullback but apparently
Gatland sees him as a strong contender for
the No 10 jersey should Farrell or Sexton not
come up to scratch.
Remarkably Richie Gray is summoned
from Scotland having given next-to-nothing to
Scotlands Six Nations campaign. He looks full
of potential but it is a travesty of justice that he
should go in place of Robshaw whose place
unaccountably.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON shocked

the football world last monhby
announcing his retirement a
few games before the end of the
season.
Though everyone knew it was coming,
one day in the relatively-near future, the
announcement came suddenly and Uniteds new manager was quickly announced.
Sir Alex said: The decision to retire is
one that I have thought a great deal about
and one that I have not taken lightly. It is
the right time.
It was important to me to leave an
organization in the strongest possible
shape and I believe I have done so. The
quality of this league-winning squad, and
the balance of ages within it, bodes well
for continued success at the highest level
whilst the structure of the youth setup will
ensure that the longterm future of the club
remains a bright one.
Our training facilities are amongst the
finest in global sport and our home Old
Trafford is rightfully regarded as one of
the leading venues in the world.
Going forward, I am delighted to take
on the roles of both Director and Ambassador for the club. With these activities,
along with my many other interests, I am
looking forward to the future.
DEVASTATED
The morning of the announcement, just
a short walk from Old Trafford stadium,
a woman wearing a Manchester United
shirt sat slumped over a pint of cider in a
deserted pub.
Lifelong United fan Rita Doherty was
watching the news of Alex Fergusons
retirement on the TV sports channel.
Im devastated, I cant believe it, said
Doherty, still clearly in shock and settling
into her second pint in The Trafford.
Its like a death in the family.
After waking up on her day off to the
news that Ferguson was ending his illustrious 26-1/2-year stint as United manager,
Doherty a 45-year-old council worker
from Derbyshire took two buses and traveled two hours just to be at Old Trafford
on this historic day for the club.
Yap Chao Wei, a 23-year-old Malaysian
student, had the same idea. He travelled
an hour from Wrexham, in north Wales,
with his Chinese girlfriend, Macy Zhong,

and sat in a daze on a bench overlooking

a statue of Matt Busby, another legendary
United manager.
WORLD
Camera crews from TV channels
all over the world Sweden, Norway,
China, among others scattered around
the ground. A member of a TV crew from
Hong Kong said he had been dispatched to
the northwest of England at late notice the
previous night after rumors of Fergusons
announcement spread.
Tourists from China took turns posing
for photos in front of Fergusons statue,
outside the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, under
grey, overcast skies. The weather summed
up the mood on a grim day for United fans.
Like most United fans milling about,
Doherty believed David Moyes, the current Everton manager, should replace
Ferguson.
I know everyone is going on about Jose
Mourinho, but Ive seen David Moyes for
years. Hes done really well at Everton
with not a lot of money and hes young,
she said.
She was prophetic, Moyes was installed
just days later as the new manager, on a
six-year contract.

CHELSEA PROVED that half-chances

make the difference between good sides
and Champions, when they won the Europa League trophy final at Amsterdam,
May 15, beating Benfica 2-1. Tight marking and cup final tension was prominent
in the early stages of the game. In the
59th minute, Fernando Torres caught
on to a ball deep from the heart of the
blues defence, catching Benfica flatfooted, as he sprinted forward, took the
ball around the goal-keeper and slotted
it in to the net. Cesar Azipilcuta was
penalized for hand-ball, thus putting the
Portugese back in the game as Cardozo
scored from the penalty spot. The game
heated up considerably, and it looked like
extra-time would be added. However, a
stunning 90th minute header from Branislav Ivanovic, delivered the coup de

grace for Chelsea (last years European

Champions) to claim their fifth European
trophy since 1971.
Earlier the Blues moved to the final of
the Europa League Trophy after winning
both semi-final legs, April 26 & May 2,
against FC Basel. In Switzerland, Victor
Moses put Chelsea ahead in the 12th
minute while drama filled the final three
minutes of the game when Basel put a
penalty away and David Luiz scored in
the last seconds for a 2-1 win. At Stamford Bridge, three goals in a nine minute
period, starting in the fiftieth minute, saw
Chelsea prevail 3-1 after Salah, had put
the Swiss in front on half-time. Fernando
Torres, Victor Moses, and David Luiz
were the marksmen. Benfica overcame
Fenerbahce with a 3-2 aggregate in the
other semi-final.
factors in Citys undoubted regression this
season, ultimately costing Mancini his job.
All signs are pointing to City appointing
Manuel Pellegrini as its new manager.

Pulis Leaves As Stoke Manager

By Mutual Consent

STOKE SAYS Tony Pulis has left as manager

by mutual consent, ending his seven-year
tenure at the Premier League club.
By guiding Stoke to a 13th-place finish this
season, Pulis secured the teams status in
Englands top division for a fifth straight year
but he came under increasing fire for failing to
change its direct and physical style of play.
Pulis was the second longest-serving
manager in the Premier League, behind
Arsene Wenger of Arsenal, in the wake of
Alex Fergusons retirement from Manchester
United last month.

Stink Over Locker-Room Vandalism

BRIGHTON has formally apologized to Crystal

Palace after excrement was found on the floor
of its fierce rivals changing room before
the second leg of their second-tier League
Championship playoff last month.
Brighton chief executive Paul Barber said
we apologized to Crystal Palace as soon
as the vandalism in their dressing room was
discovered, and again more formally a few
days after the match.
Palace won the match 2-0 at Brightons
Amex Stadium on May 13 to advance to the
playoff final.

Roberto Martinez To Leave Wigan

ROBERTO MARTINEZ answered the speculation last month, when Wigan announced
his resignation from the club he took to FA
Cup Final glory last month. All roads point
to Everton being the new club for Martinez.

Mancini Pays Price For Citys

Stagnation

AFTER ENDING Manchester Citys long wait

for silverware and tipping English footballs
balance of power to the blue half of the city,
Roberto Mancini established the perfect
platform to dominate the Premier League for
years to come.
Poor dealings in the transfer market, the
appointment of new personnel in the clubs
technical staff and an apparent lack of motivation among players are the underlying

Hull Back In Premier League After

Three-Year Absence

HULL RETURNED to the Premier League last

month after a three-year absence by clinching
a second-place finish in Englands second
tier ahead of Watford on a dramatic final day.
After drawing 2-2 with already-promoted
Cardiff, Hull would have been denied the
automatic promotion place if Watford had
beaten Leeds in a match ending later. However, Watford conceded a late goal to lose
2-1 and finish two points behind Hull.

City Celebrate MLS Deal With

Yankees By Beating Chelsea Twice

MAN CITY and the New York Yankees have

joined forces to establish a $100m Major
League Soccer team.
New York City Football Club will be the
MLSs 20th team and is set to start playing
from the 2015 season.
This is not a marketing gimmick, City
chief executive Ferran Soriano told AP. This
is about developing a team that will play very
good football and will have a chance to win.
City, which is owned by Sheik Mansour
bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi,
will be the majority owner of the team.
The venture is being launched by City amid
difficulties in England after the team failed to
win a trophy in the 2012-13 season, leading
to manager Roberto Mancini being fired.
But given their recent woes, City still beat
Premier League rivals in two friendlies in the
US last month. First match between the two
giants was at Busch Stadium in St Louis, Mis$250City
