Dambusters Remembered
A ROYAL AIR FORCE Lancaster Bomber sweeps low over the Derwent Dam in England during the Battle of
Britain Memorial Flight, last month. The event commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Dams raid on
Germany during WWII. The raid, led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, commenced on May 16 1943 when
19 RAF Lancaster Bombers of 617 Squadron launched an air assault using bouncing bombs - destroying
the Mohne and the Eder dams, and damaging a third. As a result the Squadron has ever after been

voters appeared to punish the ruling government, fed up with economic doldrums
and austerity measures. Britains nationalist party appeared to be the recipient of a
sizeable protest vote against the political
elite and the EU, analysts said.
According to returns May 3 from 34
contests across England, the right-wing
United Kingdom Independence Party,
or UKIP, won 139 county council seats,
while the mainstream opposition Labour
Party gained 291.

The Liberal Democrats junior partners
in Britains coalition government were

Camerons ruling Conservatives lost 335
seats in the vote.
UKIP leader Nigel Farage whose party
Cameron once referred to as a bunch of

said the results will send a shock wave
through the British political establishment.
This is a real sea-change in British
politics, Farage told the BBC.

ROYAL JOBSHARE
THE QUEEN plans to scale back her public duties and give Prince Charles a
bigger role as co-head of the royal family, sources have revealed.
After Buckingham Palace and senior figures in Whitehall started discussing the monarchs
advancing years, they concluded that her 64-year-old son the longest-serving heir apparent
in British history should take a more prominent position representing the sovereign at key
events, particularly those abroad.

group that lobbies on behalf of suspected
terrorists said Adebolajo and his family
had contacted it about six months ago complaining about harassment from Britains
MI5 domestic spy service. A case worker
who spoke with him said he appeared
paranoid and erratic, the group said.
His sister contacted the office to complain about constant harassment from MI5,
which extended to Michael, his brother,
and his father also, said Moazzam Begg
of the London-based group CagePrisoners.
They were all being approached in
different ways, Begg told The Associated
Press in a telephone interview. One of
them, he lived and worked abroad. Hed
been approached by MI6 (Britains external espionage agency) at his workplace
and had been offered some money. They
wanted him to work for them.
TORTURED
Begg said Adebolajo told the caseworker he had been tortured and threatened
with rape while in Kenya, and that he had
been interrogated for several hours upon
his return to London. At first, British intelligence services let him be, Begg said, but
in March 2012 they met with him and offered him a job as an informant. Adebolajo
refused, he said.
Kenyan officials said Adebolajo was
arrested in Kenya in 2010 with five others
near the countrys border with Somalia.
Police believed that Adebolajo was going
to work with the Somali Islamic militant
group al-Shabab.
Kenyan government spokesman Muthui
Kariuki told the AP that Adebolajo, who
was carrying a British passport, was taken
to court before he was handed over to British authorities in Kenya.
Britains Foreign Office confirmed that
Adebolajo was arrested in Kenya in 2010
and said the agency provided consular
assistance.
It was not clear how Adebolajo came to
be arrested and how he returned to London.
Kenyan officials have denied allegations
that he was tortured under interrogation.
Last month, Kenyas police chief David
Kimaiyo added confusion by contradicting
earlier claims and saying that Adebolajo
had never been arrested in Kenya.
CONVERTED
Earlier, hardline Muslim leaders described Adebolajo as a British citizen of
Nigerian descent who converted to Islam
attending demonstrations and lectures with
British radical group al-Muhajiroun.
Rigbys killing and Adebolajos apparent links to radical Islam have fed a spike
in anti-Muslim sentiment in Britain, with
police and activists reporting a surge in
hate crimes, violence and vandalism.
Around 1,000 supporters of the far-right
group English Defense League marched
through central London, May 26, to
protest the soldiers killing, clashing with
a smaller group of anti-fascist demonstrators and scuffling with riot police. Police
arrested 13 people, mostly on suspicion of
causing public disorder.

AS A RESIDENT of Woolwich
area, my heart has been broken by
the events that transpired in this
leafy suburb. Lee Rigby, a drummer
and gunner for the Royal Regiment
of Fusiliers, was mercilessly hacked
to death yards away from The
Woolwich Barracks.
Coming home from school, my
roommates were glued to the TV
screen, the images were sickening,
we were sure it was not a terror
attack, (we thought it was road
rage, why else would someone
be run down?) How wrong we
were... Traffic was routed out of the
neighborhood, and a bizarre quiet
descended over the area. We had not
seen the video of the impromptu
interview with blood soaked hands,
fielding calls from back home,
assuring them it was some violent
gang fight (it happens around here
sometimes) we did not know the
full hell that had reined down. As
the horror unfolded and what really
had happened came to light, I was
sickened.
The poor soldier going about his
day, going through whatever random
thing that was on his agenda, had
survived duty in Afghanistan only to
be slaughtered on the quiet tree lined
streets of Woolwich. While we were
wrapping our heads around a fallen
soldier in our own neighborhood,
the news started to pour out. The
three Angels of Woolwich rushed
in to try to prevent further harm and
sought to comfort the soldier. While
a mother placed a hand on his back
and prayed, her daughter stood over
her and the soldiers body. Another
woman put her hands in her pocket
and asked one of the attackers for the
knives; she had balls of steel. When
the attacker told her, they wanted to
start a war she responded, There
are few of you and many of us. Just
sit with that for a minute. She spoke
on the morning news about how she
thought it was better if they attacked
her than a child. She has gumption,
something we all need. The two

ESCORTED by Britains Prince Harry
and swimming superstar Missy Franklin, a
US Navy officer blinded by an improvised
bomb in Afghanistan lit an Olympic-style
cauldron last month to launch the Warrior
Games for wounded service members.
Lt Bradley Snyder, Harry and Franklin
completed the last leg of a brief torch
relay at the US Olympic Training Center
in Colorado Springs to formally start the
games.
All three lifted the torch to the lip of the
cauldron to ignite the flame.
It was a touching start to the Paralympic-style games last month. About 260
athletes competed in basketball, volleyball,
shooting, archery, track and field and
swimming Snyders sport.
Britain sent a 35-member team, and the
prince met with the athletes earlier. He also
sat on a gymnasium floor in a circle of 12
sitting volleyball players, batting the ball
around amid whoops and laughter.
Harry served as a combat helicopter in
pilot in Afghanistan, and the British veterans said that makes him easy to talk to.
INTEREST
He knows what its like out there, said
Army Capt Dave Henson, a member of the
volleyball team. Hes been on the ground
and in the air.
Henson, 28, lost both legs when an
improvised bomb exploded in Afghanistan two years ago. He said Harry took a
personal interest in the athletes recovery
and the quality of their health care.
Royal Marine Matthew Hancox, 25,
said the prince recognized some wounded
veterans he had met before and asked them
how they were recovering.
Hes very down-to-earth, said Hancox, who was shot in
the chest in Afghanistan in 2011.
The prince also
attended a volleyball
match later on the
Saturday night.
The visit to Colorado got underway
when Harry charmed
dozens of dignitaries,
British expatriates,
students and military
officers at a cocktail party welcoming
him to Colorado. He
also joined the crowd
in singing Happy
Birthday to Franklin, a Coloradan who
was celebrating turning 18 at a golf club
south of Denver.
She won four gold
medals in the 2012
Olympic Games in
London.
A captain in
Britains Army Air
Corps, Harry has deployed to Afghani-
stan twice, and he wore a brown camouflage uniform and tan combat boots when
he met with the British team.
His first deployment, as a forward air
controller in 2007-2008, was cut short after
10 weeks when details of his whereabouts
were disclosed in the media.
On his second deployment, he was a copilot and gunner on an Apache helicopter.
He acknowledged to reporters he had
targeted Taliban fighters, and when asked
if he had killed anyone, said, Yeah, so,
lots of people have.
Hes was attending the Colorado games
because he believes the wounded deserve
recognition, according to a statement from
St James Palace in London, the official
residence of the royal family.

His secret is to have linked his obsession
with leaving the European Union to immigration by claiming that the EU causes the
excessive immigration.
PROMINENCE
One of the major changes in the past three
years has pushed him into undue prominence. This is the retreat of the Lib Dems
from the political scene. For generations they
have attracted the protest vote, contentedly
opposing everything
and causing violent
swings in by-elections
and council votes.
It will come as no
surprise to you to learn
that in the council vote
on the night when Ukip
Nigel Farage swept so much before it,
that the Lib Dems fared worst of all parties,
losing a third of all their council seats.
Indeed in the parliamentary by-election on
that day when the Labour stronghold of South
Shields came up for grabs following David
Milibands resignation, the Lib Dems came
seventh, miles behind the British National
Party candidate and with only 150 more
votes than the Loony candidate Howling Laud
Hope. Little wonder then that in the same
election Ukip came second behind Labour
with the Tories out of sight in third place.
WORST
Protest vote or not, Ukip has put the wind
up the Tories. The Conservatives share of
the council vote stood at 28 percent, their
worst-ever performance. It was estimated
that Ukip took three-quarters of their votes
from the Tories and a quarter from Labour.
This would have a devastating effect at the
next election most seriously on David
Camerons party.
The single issue which has powered Ukip
is the EU and the necessity of leaving it. But
it is the most toxic of matters for the Tories,

BRITISH media say comedian Jimmy
Tarbuck was arrested and questioned about alleged child abuse
the latest in a
long list of British entertainers
to face sex crime
allegations.
The BBC, the
Press Association and others say
73-year-old Tarbuck was arrested April

Police in Britain dont usually

a 73-year-old man has been arrested
in connection with a historic child sex

The force said the alleged victim was
a young boy in the 1970s.
A comedian and quiz-show host,
Tarbuck has been a fixture on British

OBITUARIES
Paul Shane,
Hi-deHi! Actor
PAUL SHANE, 72, the actor, has died
following a short illness, his agent has said.
The star of the 80s BBC sitcom Hi-deHi! was surrounded by friends and family
in a hospice in his home town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
Shane played holiday camp host Ted
Bovis in Hi-de-Hi!, but also starred in
You Rang MLord and Oh, Dr Beeching!
His role in the fictional Maplins holiday
camp saw him regularly trying to scam
holiday-makers out of money.
He starred alongside Su Pollard, who
played chalet maid Peggy Ollerenshaw,
and Ruth Madoc, who played chief yellow
coat Gladys Pugh.
The show, set in 1959, was inspired by
the experiences of co-creator Jimmy Perry,
who worked in Butlins after the war.
It ran for eight series between 1980
and 1988 and also launched Hi-de-Hi! as
a catchphrase.
Linda Kremer, Shanes agent for 15
years, said: Paul Shane was a consum-
mate professional, a
true gentleman, a good
friend, and a joy to
work with.
He didnt suffer
fools, always maintained his sense of humour, never stinted on the time he gave
to his fans.
He lightened my life and Ill miss him
enormously.
Shane was a coal miner before starting
out as a cabaret act touring working mens
clubs in the 1960s.
In his later career he appeared in Emmerdale as Solomon Dingle, as well as
having parts in Holby City, Doctors,
Coronation Street and A Touch Of Frost.
He is survived by three daughters and
six grandchildren. His wife Dory died

Bank Of England
Sees Modest,
Sustained Recovery
By Danica Kirka
THE BANK of England predicted a modest and sustained economic recovery for
Britain last month, but tempered hope that
the worst might be over with predictions
that inflation will remain above its targets
for the next two years.
In presenting the central banks quarterly inflation report, Governor Mervyn
King offered a twinkling of optimism that
good things might be in store for a country
struggling to get back on track after the
2008 financial crisis. It has been in recession twice since then.
This hasnt been a typical recession
and it wont be a typical recovery, King
said at a press conference to explain the
reports findings. Nevertheless, a recovery is in sight.
The cautiously more cheerful outlook
gave King, who will step down as governor
in July after 10 years, a chance to deliver
his final inflation report with a bit of good
news after a tenure marred by global economic gloom.
King has presented 82 inflation reports
since joining the central bank 20 years ago
first as chief economist, then as deputy
governor and finally as governor. He will
be replaced by Mark Carney, now head of
the Bank of Canada.

SOME British troops will be serving longer tours of duty as the UK prepares to end
its combat role in Afghanistan, Britains
defense secretary said last month.
Philip Hammond told lawmakers that
Britains combat role will still close by the
end of 2014, but that a brigade deploying
in Afghanistan in October will serve eightmonth tours. A subsequent brigade could
serve a final tour of up to nine months.
Most tours are for six months, but that
has been judged not to be sustainable
during the final months of the drawdown,
the defense secretary said in the House of
Commons.
The arrangements which could affect
up to 3,700 troops will help maintain
continuity during the drawdown and the
handing over of security responsibilities
to Afghan forces. It will also eliminate the
need to deploy another brigade.
ADVICE
The rationale for this decision is clear
and is based on advice from military commanders, Hammond told lawmakers.
Britains role is evolving from engaging
in combat to training, advising and assisting Afghan troops. Afghan security forces
now lead 80 percent of security operations
in most of the country, and Hammond said
last month that will be up to 100 percent
by the summer.
Britain once had about 9,500 military
personnel in Afghanistan. By the end of
this year, that number is expected to fall
to about 5,200.
Those serving extended tours will get
paid extra because they are expected to
face more austere conditions as bases
close and equipment is removed, Hammond said.

SHOWCASING
Dragons, a small British family business
that was hired by Princess Diana to design
a nursery for William and Prince Harry, is
showcasing a hotel nursery suite that offers
the royal treatment for wealthy commoners from 2,230 a night.
Despite the price, the suite is more
understated than lavish. Theres a crib
adorned with a coronet and delicate
drapes, a luxury miniature play table and
a changing unit, all painstakingly painted
by artisans in soothing, muted shades of
beige and pastels.
We wanted to create a sanctuary
where it feels very safe, very peaceful,
said the companys managing director
Lucinda Croft.
Her firm also designed nurseries for
Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrews
two daughters, Princesses Beatrice and
Eugenie.
Croft would not say whether she is
working with William and Kate on their
nursery, citing the royals privacy concerns. She recalls her mothers shock
when, three decades ago, a tabloid reporter
found out she was working with Diana to
design Williams nursery and called to ask
about the details.
DESIGNING
The late Diana who Croft says was
very hands-on, very involved in designing her nursery lived for many years at
Kensington Palace, where both William
and Prince Harry spent their early years.
Deborah Saunt, a London-based architect who has worked with many wealthy
clients, says the priorities in designing
nurseries are the same no matter the childs
background: lots of natural light and access
to the outdoors. The less elaborate the better, she says and that goes for a future
king or queen as well.
When you design for very young
children its really about trying to imagine
the world through their eyes, creating the
kind of stimulation they need, she said.
Those things dont necessarily cost a lot
of money ... (children) dont care if its
cashmere or cotton.
The child will be third in line to the
British throne after Prince Charles and
William. The royal babys soon-to-begreat-grandmother, 87-year-old Elizabeth
II, is Britains reigning monarch.

Controversial Lord
Ahmed Resigns
From Labour Party
A MEMBER of Britains House of Lords
quit the Labour Party last month, two days
before he was due to face a hearing over
allegations he made anti-Semitic remarks
in a television interview.
Nazir Ahmed was suspended from the
Labour Party in March following a report
that he blamed a Jewish conspiracy for
his 2009 prison sentence for dangerous
driving.
Ahmed had insisted he did not recall
making the alleged comments to an Urdulanguage broadcaster in Pakistan, but was
due to appear before Labours National
Executive Committee on Wednesday
about the accusations.
CONFIRMED
His lawyer Stephen Smith said he did
not think Ahmed would have received a
fair trial from the Labour panel, and the
party confirmed that Ahmed had resigned.
He remains a member of the House of
Lords.
The alleged remarks came to light when
the Times said it had obtained footage of
an Urdu-language TV interview where
Ahmed blamed his 12-week prison sentence on pressure put on courts by Jewishowned media organization.
The controversy came a year after
Ahmed was suspended from the Labour
Party amid reports he offered a bounty for
the capture of President Barack Obama
comments he denied.
Boston Exhibition
Shows British-Owned
Treaty 1763: A
Revolutionary Peace
A NEW exhibition at Old State House,
Boston, features exclusive original British signed copy of Treaty of Paris, never
before shown in North America.
Last month The Bostonian Society
opened a new exhibition, 1763: A Revolutionary Peace, exploring the history and
significance of an epoch-making peace
on the occasion of its 250th anniversary.
Britains original signed copy of the 1763
Treaty of Paris, which forever redrew
the geo-political boundaries of European
North America, is the featured object of
the exhibition, and has never been seen
on the North America continent until now.
On February 10, 1763, the Treaty of Paris
was signed, putting an end to the seven
year war. Celebratory fireworks exploded
in the night sky over London and Paris. In
Boston, a great crowd gathered beneath
the balcony of the Old State House to hear
peace officially proclaimed
Belonging to the British United Kingdom, the Treaty on display at the Old State
House is one of three manuscript treaty
texts signed by representatives of Britain,
France, and Spain. The exhibition has been
on view at the Old State House from May
25, and will run until October 7.

Virginity Auction
FOLLOWING the auctioning of a Brazilian girls virginity last year, the filmmaker
is now promoting a reality TV show based
on the same content.
Australian, Justin Sisely filmed Virgins
Wanted, a documentary film project in
which both a man and a woman auctioned
off their virginity, last year.
Now Sisely is promoting it as a reality TV series, which is set to debut at
an entertainment trade fair in October in
Cannes, France.
It is now a factual series, Sisely told
The Huffington Post. We have signed a
distribution contract with a leading global
multi-national distributor of television
content.
Catarina Migliorini, the female virgin,
reportedly received a winning bid of more
than 500,000 for her virginity from a
Japanese man known as Natsu.
Predictably, her male counterpart, Alex
Stepanov, only received a top bid of about
2,000, from an Australian woman identifying herself as Kasandra Darlinghurst.
Sisely says the project created a huge
amount of interest and he was receiving
at least 50 emails a week from virgins and
potential bidders wanting to be involved
in a follow up.
We have received over 500 videos of
men and women from all over the world
outlining why they should be the next
virgin to auction their virginity, he said.

Gandhis Blood
Sample Fails To
Sell In Britain
DOZENS of Mohandas Gandhis
personal items have been sold at
an auction, but a sample of blood
purportedly from the Indian independence leader didnt draw high
enough bids.
The memorabilia offered by British auction house Mullocks in Ludlow, England, included a handwritten
will, a shawl, a pair of worn leather
sandals and a rice bowl said to come
from the house in India where Gandhi
lived from 1917 to 1934.
One item was described as a bit of
Gandhis blood on two glass microscope slides, said to be provided by
the leader when he was recovering
from an operation for appendicitis
in 1924.
Spokesman Richard WestwoodBrookes said bidding for the blood
didnt meet the 10,000 reserve price.
He said about 50 other items took in
287,000 in the auction.
Irishman Charged
With 1982 IRA
Hyde Park Bombing
A 61-YEAR-OLD Irishman has been
charged with the Irish Republican Army
bombing of the queens ceremonial cavalry in Hyde Park in 1982 that killed four
soldiers and seven horses.
State prosecutors say John Downey was
arrested last month at Gatwick Airport and
was to be arraigned later on four counts
of murder and one count of causing an
explosion.
Nobody has been successfully prosecuted for the IRAs July 20, 1982, twin
bomb attacks on ceremonial troops performing in London.
The IRAs first bomb in Hyde Park was
planted in a parked car and detonated by
remote control. A second that had been
hidden in a bandstand in Regents Park
killed seven army musicians during a
performance.

Arsenal: The Gunners qualified
for the Champions League for a
16th straight season after edging
Newcastle, 1-0, to claim fourth
place. Lucas Podolski got a pair of goals,
including one during a burst of three goals
in eight minutes, in a 4-1 defeat of Wigan.
Theo Walcott (with his 21st goal) and Aaron
Ramsey also scored as the Gunners broke
open a 1-1 tie in the 63rd, 68th, and 71st
minutes. Walcott struck in the first minute at
QPR and the Gunners held on all the way for
a 1-0 win.
Aston Villa: Darren Bent opened
the scoring at Wigan in the fifth minute
and after Villa fell behind, Ron Vlaar
earned a 2-2 tie with a superb volley
on the hour. Gabriel Agbonlahors two secondhalf goals powered Villa to a 2-1 victory at
Norwich City that all but cemented their place
in the Premier League next season.
Chelsea: Juan Mata scored
early and Fernando Torres won
it late as Chelsea concluded the
season by downing Everton, 2-1,
to clinch third place. Frank Lampard broke
Bobby Tamblings all-time club record by
scoring his 202nd and 203rd goals in a 2-1
defeat of Aston Villa, after which he signed a
new contract with the club to play for Jose
Mourinho, most likely, next season.
Everton: After 11 years and
518 matches, David Moyes signed
off as manager in a 2-1 loss at
Chelsea. Tim Howards fumble of
a routine save led to Chelseas opener and
though Steven Naismith equalized Everton
couldnt reply again. Goals in each half by
Kevin Mirallas brought Moyes a victory in his
final game in charge at Goodison Park, a 2-0
triumph over West Ham United.
Fulham: The reeling Cottagers
ended a seven-match winless run
by finishing the season in style, winning 3-0 at Swansea. Alex Kacaniklic, Dimitar Berbatov and Urby Emanuelson
scored to secure 12th place, three spots lower
than they finished last season. Bryan Ruiz
scored twice within a seven-minute span that
also featured a Hugo Rodallega shot off the
crossbar as the Cottagers rallied but fell short
in a 4-2 loss to Reading.
Liverpool: A 1-0 defeat of
relegated Queens Park Rangers
left Liverpool in seventh place and
with 61 points, nine more than
they earned last season but still
in arrears of Merseyside rival Everton. Philippe
Coutinhos goal midway through the second
half ensured that Jamie Carraghers Anfield
farewell would be a winning one: he retires
with 737 club appearances and more than
16 years of service, seventh-highest in club
history. The week before, Daniel Sturridge hit
a hat trick to fuel a rally that downed Fulham,
3-1, on the road.
Manchester City: Jack
Rodwells two equalizers werent
enough to prevent a 3-2 home
loss to Norwich City in the season
finale played with interim manager Brian Kidd
in charge. Roberto Mancini was given the boot
after City lost to Wigan in the FA Cup final,
precisely one year after clinching the 2011-12
Premier League title. Sergio Aguero and Edin
Dzeko scored late in each half in Citys 2-0 win
at Reading in the wake of Mancinis dismissal.
Manchester United: Javier
Hernandez scored Uniteds fifth
goal in the season finale at West
