10 worst Hurricanes of all time

This massive storm is considered the deadliest hurricane of all time. while there isnt much
data recorded, what is known is that the storm caused winds up to 200mph (320 kph), and
blasted its way through the Caribbean killing approximately 22,000 people. Among the
dead were British and American soldiers who had been part of the Revolutionary War.

Mitch is the second deadliest hurricane on record and the worst to hit the Western Hemisphere in more
than 200 years. The slow moving hurricane poured up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of rain an hour for two
days, causing mudslides and deadly flooding along the way. Killing approximately 11,000 people, and
thousands more missing. This storm caused more than $5 billion in damage.

The Galveston Hurricane is considered the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history. The storm
brought 20 foot (6 meter) storm surges and flash flooding, more than 3,600 homes were
destroyed in the hurricane, and killing an estimated of 6,000 to 12,000 people. This
hurricane damaged a total of $30 million.

Hurricane Katrina is often referred to as a man made, rather than a natural disaster, the Federal
Emergency Management Agency calls it the single most catastrophic natural disaster in U.S. history. The
hurricane reached the city, the water topped over the levee system causing them to brake and streets to
flood, Eventually 80 percent of the city was underwater. The Hurricane killed 1,833 people, and caused
$108 billion in damage considering it the costliest hurricane in U.S. history.

This storm is known as the Labor Day Hurricane because the practice of naming hurricanes did not
begin until 1953, this hurricane is considered the strongest to hit the U.S. in the 20

had waited for an evacuation train that never came, tracks were washed away.

Gilbert was one of the largest hurricanes ever observed in the Atlantic basin. With 500
nautical miles (926 Kilometers) Gilbert covered the entire island, damaging 80 percent of
homes. The storm killed 318 people, and causing $5.5 billion in damage.

Camille was another hurricane to hit the U.S. since 1900. A nasty storm that brought heavy
flooding and 200 mph (320 kph) Camille continued to pour upward of 20 inches ( 51
centimeters ) of rain as well as flash flooding and mudslides on a region just 120 miles from
the national capital. The storm killed 256 people, and caused $1.4 billion in damage.

The hurricane Sandy is also referred to as the supperstorm Sandy because as it
approached New York it had characteristics of a winter storm rather than a tropical one.
The hurricane damaged about 650,000 homes, and killing 117 people. The hurricane is
second most costly hurricane in U.S. history causing damage of $65 billion.

Andrew was originally considered a weak formation when it developed, but ended with a
bang. Andrew demolished scores of homes, it turned low laying streets into waterways. The
hurricane killed approximately 15 people, and a estimated damage of $26.5 billion that
made Andrew the costliest hurricane in U.S history for more than a decade.
