This document describes a water resistant polyvinyl acetate aqueous emulsion that is useful as an adhesive for applying to wood material. The emulsion is formaldehyde-free and exhibits excellent water resistance. It can be used alone or combined with additional cross-linking agents to further improve water resistance. When used to make plywood, the resulting product meets the standards for type 2 plywood regulated in China. The emulsion is produced by copolymerizing vinyl acetate with a silicon monomer containing an ethylenically unsaturated functional group in an aqueous medium using a catalyst.
