Librarianship has
always been a service
profession. People
attracted to service
want to help others,
which is great. But they
can sometimes suffer
mental, physical
and/or emotional
burnout. Hopefully
some of the tips below
will remind you to treat
yourself well. Because
if you don't do it, who
will?
1. Get optimal amounts of healthful food, sleep, exercise,
and medical care. The mental and physical benefits o f
good food, sleep, and exercise are woefully
underestimated by most people. Continual exhaustion,
physical pain, and/or stress are not "a part of life" or a
sign of your indispensability. Rather, they are indicators
that something is amiss. It is very important that you stay
healthy. Medical check-ups should help catch problems
early, which saves time, anguish, and expense.

2. Enlist support and technology. Many, many people make

New Year's resolutions to lose weight, eat better, "get in
shape," etc. only to fall back off the wagon in a few
months. Avoid this fate with realistic goals, concrete
deadlines, and visible reminders. Decide what you need to
do differently: center less of your social gatherings on fast
food? Go to meet-ups with people who share your health
goals? Don't forget to seek emotional support, whether it
is in person or online. If you have a mobile device, there
is a plethora of health-related apps to choose from.

3. Your health is not just physical. Although our society still

stigmatizes mental illness, 1 in 4 people have an issue
with it at some point. It's nothing to be ashamed of, any
more than conditions such as diabetes, asthma, or
allergies. Get professional help if you can afford it, or talk
to friends or look for support online if you can't.

4. No one is irreplaceable (at work). Don't push yourself to

the point of no return. If you are doing extra work or double
duty, give a thought about what is essential and what
needs to be let go. Use concrete figures and mission
statements to check your case. If at all possible,
delegate. It will save you time in the long run, and your
delegate gets some much-needed experience. Win win!

EBSO 2013 Grand finale concludes with much fanfare!

Article contributed by
Mr. Mukesh C Bharti (Sr. Librarian),

One of the most anticipated Quiz campaign by

Elsevier South Asia, the Grand Finale of Elsevier
Basic Sciences Olympiad (EBSO) - concluded with
the same euphoria and hype that is traditionally the
hallmark of this programme. With its first successful
flight to medical colleges outside India, this
Olympiad had seen participation of over 15,000
students from more than 200 medical colleges
across South Asia.
This Olympiad is a unique platform that encourages
the budding medical students to take the basic
sciences seriously. It is much appreciated by both
students and faculty, and has been dubbed as a
massive success and a great initiative from Elsevier.
In words of Prof. Junaid Ashraf, Principal, Dow
Medical College, Karachi, "Elsevier is one of those
very few organizations which have been working to provide educational resources for the under privileged students around the world. It
is a pleasure for us that Dow Medical College was selected as one of the institution for conducting the Elsevier Basic Sciences
Olympiad".
The grand finale of EBSO was held on 15th February, 2014 at the India International Centre, New Delhi. Top 22 bright and enthusiastic
MBBS students from India, Pakistan and Nepal competed with each other to achieve the top 3 slots. Esteemed author Prof Colin
Robertson, Dr Vishram Singh, Dr Satyanarayana, Dr Dinesh Puri and Dr Indu Khurana were part of the programme as the rich panel of
jury.

Announcing the roll out of:

from Seth G.S. Medical College (Mumbai)

1st runner- Mr. Dhan Bahadur Shrestha

from Nepalese Army Institute of Health Sciences (Nepal)

Prof. Robertson's Visit to South Asia - a huge success!

Libraries have seen significant

challenges in the new digital
publishing environment. The growth of
eBooks databases, e-learning and
electronic journals has been changing
the value of a library. Libraries are
successfully moving from analog to the
digital age by providing access to a broad range of digital and
multimedia tools that will prepare future generations with 21stcentury technology skills. Across the nation, libraries are
providing online access for people, and are finding creative
ways to address patrons' technology demands.
Libraries are more relevant than ever. They are a place for
human's growth and reinvention, a place for help in navigating
the information age, a gathering place for education society
and culture, human engagement. While the technology for
accessing library materials has changed and will continue to
change, our mission - to inform, to share and to gather - will not.
In the first thirteen years of the 21st century we were enjoying
information technology in different forms like on line
information technology, literature printing technology,
teaching technology, study and e-learning technology, videoconferencing technology in libraries. In current years
publishers are developing practical and dynamic platforms of
information in entire subjects of education, for example
MD Consult, Student Consult, Clinical learning, ScienceDirect,
ExPharmaPro and many other sources consortiums. Technology
has impacted the library working environment. Present time
librarian has taken place of information officer and is changing
the dimensions of information for users because it's a demand
of libraries. Most libraries have accepted the changing values in
the education society and are upgrading themselves with
digital information technology. Today 85-90 % libraries have
facilities of internet, online sources, non-book materials and
reprographic services.

In Feb 2014, Prof. Colin Robertson, Professor of Accident and Emergency

Medicine and Surgery at The University of Edinburgh, Scotland and renowned
author of the Elsevier's best seller MacLeod's Clinical Examination, visited many
leading colleges, such as DY Patel Medical College, Balaji Medical College,
Medical College Kolkata, Dhaka Medical College etc. as a part of his lecture tour
to India & Bangladesh, supported by Elsevier.

Library user services have traditionally focused on collection

support educational activities to help patrons use their libraries
more effectively. Virtual information system is rising in modern
time of information technology and libraries are following trend

The much-awaited visit of Prof Robertson, took the health science education
community by storm. More than 8 colleges and 2000+ students and faculty
interacted with the esteemed author regarding topics like Clinical Case Studies,
Risks in Clinical Medicine etc.

We welcome your articles, photographs

A beaming student, Prakash Amrapali, of Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical

College had this to say after one such interaction, "Great learning from the guru of
Medicine, facilitated by Elsevier- this is one of the best things that could have
taken place.
The entire tour of the author concluded with his being a member of the panel of
jury who judged the Elsevier Basic Sciences Olympiad Grand Finale, and lastly his
visit to the New Delhi World Book Fair at Pragati Maidan, where he met many
students at the Elsevier stall and also gave them the signed copies of his books.

of virtual learning with support of high speed internet and Wi-Fi

facilities. Many libraries of the world have blossomed on the
internet. The current research results suggested such type of
services are most effective in education learning because any
type of information are available at a mouse click.
There have been claims that college undergraduates have
become more used to retrieving information from the Internet
than a traditional library. As each generation becomes more in
tune with the Internet, their desire to retrieve information as
quickly and easily as possible has increased. Finding
information by simply searching the Internet could be much
easier and faster than reading an entire book. In a survey
conducted by NetLibrary, 93% of undergraduate students
claimed that finding information online makes more sense to
them than going to the library. Also, 75% of students surveyed
claimed that they did not have enough time to go to the library
and that they liked the convenience of the Internet. While
retrieving information from the Internet may be efficient and
time saving than visiting a traditional library, it's the demand of
time to make hi-tech libraries with presence of digital
information environment and user friendly services. It is also a
need of publishers to create more supportive digital
information for libraries.
