Tutorial 4 Building Services
1

Question 1
A two storey office building of floor area 400 m
2
has the following toilet configuration
with all sanitary wares closed grouped together:
Ground floor: 2 WCs (6L), 2 wash basins and 3 urinals with flush valves.
First floor: 3 WCs (6L) and 2 wash basins.

All the toilet blocks on each floor can be assumed to be located exactly one above the
other so that the duct riser is common to both floors to allow routing of main stacks.
uPVC pipes are used for routing of waste and sewer services.

Information provided:
a. A system IV separate discharge stack system is envisaged for this building
b. DU for WC is 2.0, DU for WHB is 0.3 and DU for Urinal is 0.3.
c. The frequency factor K is 0.5.
d. Velocity of effluent to be between 0.5 and 1.0 m/s.
e. The discharge stack has secondary ventilation but the discharge branches are
unventilated.
f. Swept entries are used in all cases.

Determine the following:
1) The schematic representation of the waste and sewer network showing both the
waste and sewer discharge branch and stack connecting to the gully trap and
sewer manhole.
2) The sewer stack and sewer discharge pipe sizes for both floors, taking reference
from the schematic layout.
3) The waste stack and waste discharge pipe sizes for both floors, taking reference
from the schematic layout.
4) The main waste discharge pipe connecting to the gully trap and the main sewer
discharge pipe connecting to the sewer manhole.
5) The waste and sewer ventilating stack pipe size connected to their respective
discharge stack.

Question 2
One toilet 6m wide by 5m deep and one kitchen 5m wide by 5m deep are located in a
one storey office building. Assume the height of each room to be 3m. All ductwork used
shall be in galvanised metal sheet. Calculate the following:
1) The volume air extraction rate for the toilet and kitchen.
2) The main duct and branch duct sizes.
3) The pressure drop due to duct and fittings along the index path.
4) The total pressure drop along index path.
5) Rating of the fan in terms of flowrate and pressure drop.

The schematic layout is provided below.

Information provided:
a. Air change rate (ach) for toilet is 6 and for kitchen is 10.
b. The vertical height of the cold water pipe can be assumed to be 3m.
c. The pressure drop due to the extract diffuser in the toilet is 10Pa.
d. The index path is 1-3-4.
e. The duct lengths along all sections are as follows: 1 to 3 is 5.5m, 2 to 3 is 5m
and 3 to 4 is 6m.
f. The air velocity in the branch duct (1-3 and 2-3) is 5.5 m/s and the air velocity
in the main duct (3-4) is 6 m/s.
g. There is one bend on the branch duct 1-3 and one branch on the main duct 3-4.
h. Formula for pressure drop due to fittings = No of fittings x (k V
2
)/2
where k is 0.5 for bend and entry from room fittings, 0.3 for branch
V is the air velocity in the duct
is the air density (1.21 kg/m
3
)
i. For selection of extract fan, a margin of 10% can be considered on the flowrate
and a margin of 20% can be considered for the total pressure drop along the
index path.
