Dear MP,

I am writing to express my deep concern about the insufficient measures taken by the UK
government to help the Kurdish people in Northern Iraq, who are face-to-face with one of the
largest humanitarian tragedies of recent history. The world is watching a genocide unfold,
and our leaders are not taking the required action!
We have been watching in the news how insufficient the aid efforts have been even after 8
days in to this crisis; people are still dying from hunger and thirst. There are tens of
thousands of people, Yazidis and Christians, displaced only to find themselves in cities
without shelter and basic needs for survival. This is an utter shame for this government that
has promised 8m aid to help the region. The government should take immediate action to
address this tragedy and to provide the necessary aid in an effective manner and help
people to get to safety using helicopters and appropriate transportation. The Chinook
helicopters sent should not only be used for aid, but for moving people to safety!
Appropriate camp sites with sufficient supply of food and water, and the required hygiene
conditions, should be built for people until a safe and secure environment is established for
them to return to their homes.
At the same time it is imperative that UK takes the necessary military action to suppress
ISIS, this should not just be through air strikes in the manner US has done, but more
targeted ground action. The least this government can do is provide military support to the
Kurdish forces on the ground, who have so far been the only ones protecting and helping the
civilians.
As Borris Johnson has written in the Daily Telegraph on Sunday, "we should help because
we have a moral duty to that part of the world. It was the British who took the decision in the
early Twenties to ignore the obvious ethnic divisions, and not to create a Kurdistan. (Indeed,
on one notorious occasion the British actually used gas to suppress a Kurdish revolt.)" It is
long overdue that we correct this wrong and help the Kurdish people get some peace, this
nation has suffered enough genocides and aggression at the hands of autocratic rulers,
aided and armed by western governments that pretend to be peaceful.
Please push the government to take action and sign any EDMs relating to stopping this crisis
and helping the people in the region.
Yours Sincerely,
Name
