Performance Notes
Saxophone Multiphonics
Select  two  low,  murky  multiphonics.  These  will  be  played  at  the  beginning  of  the  
piece  and  at  measure  75.  The  higher  of  the  two  will  be  rapidly  articulated.  Both  will  
be  played  no  louder  than  mp.  They  are  notated  below  the  staff,  below  the  tenor’s  
playable  range.    

Piano Extended Techniques

Some  notes  are  played  with  a  wide  gong  mallet.  These  are  indicated  by  a  small  
circle.  The  notehead  indicates  which  of  two  gestures  to  use:  
 
 
 Sweep  the  strings  upward  
from  that  low  F  to  low  C.  
 
 
 
       Strike  the  cluster  of  the  
lowest  A  to  C  strings.  

Violin
At  rehearsal  letter  F,  gliss  between  tremolo’d  notes  as  desired  to  create  a  feeling  of  
off-­‐kilter  tension.
