Epilogue: Finding Favor With God and Man
Epilogue: Finding Favor With God and Man
EPILOGUE
Favor in Hebrew comes from the same word as the word grace. Simply put, favor is a function of God's
grace. We cannot find favor with God or man without experiencing the unmerited grace of God. Throughout
the Bible, God desires to favor us. However, just as we grow in grace, we must grow in favor.
The Gospel writer, Luke, tells us that "Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and
man" (Luke 2:52 — KJV). Jesus ultimately is our example and model. We ought always want to be more and
more like Him. If Jesus increased in favor with God and man, we ought to as well. An Old Testament text,
Proverbs 3:1-13, and a gospel lesson, Luke 2:41-52, will serve as the instructional instruments for this
epilogue. With every instruction comes a promise of what's going to happen afterwards.
Proverbs 3:1-13 (KJV)
1
My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
2
For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
3
Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the
table of thine heart:
4
So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
5
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
7
Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.
8
It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
9
Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
10
So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
11
My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction:
12
For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he
delighteth.
13
Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
Luke 2:41-52 (KJV)
41
Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
42
And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the
feast.
43
And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind
in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
44
But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and
they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
45
And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
46
And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the
midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47
And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
48
And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why
hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49
And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about
my Father's business?
50
And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51
And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but
his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Summary
God's grace is not only sufficient for salvation, but it also overflows into God's blessing-ocean and causes
us to be able to find favor with God and man.
God wants us to find favor with Him and man by obtaining wisdom and understanding. How? First, by
making our hearts treasure chests of His principles and standards. Second, by leaning not on our own
understanding, and third, by consecrating our substance by honoring Him with the first fruit of our increase.
The major reason many of us do not find favor with God and man is that we reject correction from God.
God corrects us so He can bless us, but we reject His correction.
Ultimately we are to grow in wisdom and understanding and find favor with God and man as Jesus did.
How? First, by stepping away from the crowd and marching to the beat of a different drummer. Second, by
being about our Father's business and minding our own business. And third, by having a submissive spirit,

even as Jesus was submissive to His earthly father and mother, and of course His and our Heavenly Father.
