Analysis: Coal India & LPG cap hike effect on oil & gas stocks FIIs throng mid-and small-caps INSIDE 20 January 2014, Mumbai Clifford Alvares P rivate companies have been increasing their dividend payouts at a much faster pace than their public sector counterparts, although some PSU companies are making huge payouts in absolute terms. Private companies have been increasing their dividend payouts at a compounded annual growth of 22.5 percent compared to 16.7 per cent made by PSUs in the last four years, an analysis of BSE 200 companies shows. While PSUs have distributed dividends of Rs 46,198 crore in FY13, a bulk of these were accounted for by just a handful of them. The top five companies out of 36 government-owned companies account for nearly 60 per cent of the total payouts.Recently, Coal India announced an interim dividend of Rs 18,371 crore, which is more than 207 per cent its last payout of Rs 8,843 crore and it's also the highest single dividend payout by an Indian company. PSUs have pushed up their dividend payouts to around 34 per cent of net profits in FY13 from 28 percent in FY09, largely due to bulk payouts from the larger PSUs. Overall, though, dividend payout policies of Indian companies have been getting better in the past four years. Indian companies have been raising dividend payouts by a CAGR of 19.7 per cent in the last four years,.The case was not the same in FY09 when dividends were significantly lower as a percentage of net profits. Payouts have increased from 23 per cent of net profits in FY09 to around 29.8 per cent of profits in FY13 in a sign that companies are not retaining capital but are preferring to distribute it to their shareholders. Analysts say that while dividends are improving, they should be looked at specifically with the historical practice of companies. Sonam Udasi, head of research, IDBI Cap says One should look at historical dividend payouts as a policy and how companies are improving them. It shows how confident the company is of its future. Domestic companies have been retaining higher earnings as they say that they want more capital for growth. Analysts also point out that although the overall improvement in dividend trend is encouraging, the increase in payouts should be more broad-based across sectors as retaining profits tends to decrease returns on net worth. Jitendra Kumar Gupta I t seems neither Coal India (CIL) nor its shareholders know what to do with the huge cash pile of Rs 62,000 crore the company is sitting on. A back- of-the-envelope calculation of extrapolating the cash flows in the previous financial years, this kitty is likely to swell to Rs 82,000 crore in FY15, or nearly 44% of its current market capitalisation (m-cap). If things remain as they are, at some point in time, the market will start putting more value for the cash CIL holds in its books rather than its business of coal mining! One argument suggest that the company should deploy the funds more productively by investing in assets that would yield high returns or return it to the investors through the buyback / special dividend route. Simply keeping money in a bank deposit would not yield a high return for CIL since the average yield on such bank deposits may not be more than 89%. On the other hand, those investors who do not wish to tender the shares in a buyback could still play the stock for dividend. CAPEX VS BUYBACK Another sensible step for the company could be to start deploying cash in the business through capex that will not only help in growth but will also help boost valuations once earnings improve. Even from the shareholders perspective, if the company deploys money in the business, every rupee of earnings will add 12 times (based on price to earnings ratio of 12) to its m-cap. In this case, investors will make more money if the cash is deployed in the business as stock price could increase on account of an overall improvement in the return / financial ratios. Another way the company can utilise the cash is to go in for a buyback. At current market price, the company is making almost 10% earnings yield, which is better than the bank rate. However, a buyback may not be a feasible option considering that it will lead to the liquidity issues and price manipulation in the event of a low float. If things remain as they are, at some point in time, the market will start putting more value for the cash CIL holds in its books rather than its business of coal mining LPG cap hike sees oil & gas stocks bleed Puneet Wadhwa I nvestors have not taken too kindly to Congress vice-president, Rahul Gandhis populist measure to increase the cap on subsidised LPG cylinders from the exiting nine to 12 per year. Reacting to the development, HPCL, BPCL and IOC lost 2%, 1.8% and 1.1% in early trades on Monday. The S&P BSE Oil & Gas index ended down nearly 1.2%.Investors are resenting the move of the government of once again going back into the subsidy regime and making a bigger hold in the countrys balance sheet by adding to the fiscal deficit. This is clearly getting reflected on how the stocks are behaving in trade, said Deven Choksey, MD & CEO, K R Choksey Securities. The move is likely to increase under-recoveries by Rs 3,300 crore 5,300 crore per year on the exchequer in the form of subsidy. The total under-recoveries are likely to increase by 35% for FY2015, as per our estimates. We await final approval from the Cabinet before we incorporate increase in subsidy due to increased quota, said an analyst from Angel Broking. Points out Sudeep Anand, an analyst tracking the sector with IDBI Capital: As per IOCs estimates, the impact of the move is around Rs 5,700 crore. As estimate FY15 under- recoveries at Rs 1.1 trillion (Rs 110,000 crore) excluding the burden due to the latest move. However, what needs to be seen is how this is shared among players in the sector. 4 Tulemino Antao M arkets ended higher on Monday, shrugging off weak global cues, with IT majors gaining the most after they reported better-than-expected third quarter earnings. Analysts suggest that post the rally in the large-cap counters, mid-cap stocks would have appeared more attractive based on valuation for the FIIs to up their holding in these stocks/companies. Of the 453 mid-and- small cap firms that have so far declared their December quarter shareholding pattern reveal that FIIs have increased their stake in nearly 42% or 190 companies and in 101 companies, their holdings remain unchanged. While, in the remaining 162 firms they have reduced their stake during the recently concluded quarter. Among individual stocks, Ceat, Pennar Industries, UPL, APL Apollo Tube, Natco Pharma, HDIL and Zee Learn have seen FIIs up stake between 48 percentage points during the recently concluded quarter, data suggests. FIIs stake in personal products maker Gillette India has increased by 6 percentage points to 7.81% from 1.68%. The overseas investors have bought shares in offer for sale (OFS) by Gillette India promoters. Equity flows continue unabated with CY13 receiving $20 billion (third highest equity flow ever). Private Financials, Utilities, Technology and Automobiles were the top sectors seeing maximum FII inflows during CY09-CY13, said Rajat Rajgarhia, managing director - institutional equities at Motilal Oswal Securities. RACING AHEAD A strong buying by overseas investors have seen, the market value of the companies in which FIIs increased their stake has appreciated by an average 19% against an average less than 12% gain recorded by the remaining companies. The gush of liquidity has seen the mid-and small-cap indices outperform their large peers during the period. Since October, the S&P BSE mid- and small-cap indices have rallied 15.7% and 18.5% respectively, as compared to a modest 8.7% gain on the S&P BSE Sensex. FIIs stake in information technology (IT) companies such as eClerx Services, Polaris Financial Technologies and Persistent Systems has increased 34 percentage points on hopes of uptick in spending by clients and a rise in discretionary spending during 2014 on better macro- economic environment in United States and European Union. Aurobindo Pharmaceuticals, FDC, Biocon, Oberoi Realty, Indiabulls Real Estate, Amara Raja Batteries and PVR have seen FIIs up their stake between 13 percentage points, data shows. On the other hand, their holdings in Ashok Leyland, Voltamp Transformers, Jubilant Life Sciences, Peninsula Land and Tilaknagar Industries have declined more than 2 percentage points each. With the US Federal Reserve tapering its bond buying programme, India could see moderation in flows. This will particularly impact the sectors / stocks where the FII holding is high. With four months remaining for the Lok Sabha elections, a lot of action is expected on the political front which is likely to keep markets volatile and the environment uncertain, Rajgarhia cautions.
