Routin/ Syste! ++B was developed at t(e $aboratory of %ydraulic "onstructions ?$"%@ at t(e
#cole Polytec(niAue FCdCrale de $ausanne ?#PF$@. 6(e pro/ra! si!ulated t(e for!ation of
free surface run'off flow and its propa/ation. +t !odelled (ydrolo/ical and (ydraulic co!ple;
networ8 accordin/ to a se!i'distributed conceptual sc(e!e. +n addition to particular
(ydrolo/ic processes suc( as snow!eltB /lacier !eltB surface and under/round flowB
(ydraulic control ele!ents ?e./. /atesB spillwaysB diversionsB :unctionsB turbines and pu!ps@
were also incorporated.
%avin/ as base t(e pro/ra! Routin/ Syste! ++B RS MINERE was al!ost co!pletely recoded
to produce a pro/ra! t(at is already a reference for (ydrolo/ical and (ydraulic !odelin/.
6(rou/( 8ey partners(ips and its use in !any study casesB new features and additional
(ydrolo/ical ob:ects (ave been developed. 6(e software interface (as also been ret(ou/(t
and redesi/ned to si!plify its use.
A /lobal analysis of a (ydrolo/ic'(ydraulic networ8 is essential for !ost of t(e cases li8e t(e
opti!i<ation of (ydropower plantsB t(e desi/n and re/ulation of spillways or t(e
develop!ent and opti!i<ation of an appropriate flood protection concept. RS *+,#R&#
allows suc( 8ind of analysis due to its si!ple and user'friendly interface and its open
structure facilitatin/ t(e i!ple!entation and adaptation of new develop!ents.
+n t(is new versionB r#in;#ll!runo;; +SMB S)C)N1B SAC!SMAB +R8* and H/ models are
available for !odelin/ t(e (ydrolo/ical be(avior of waters(eds. 6(e inclusion of a
consumption model allows includin/ cities and far!lands and calculates water deficits. A
hydropo9er model co!putes t(e net (ei/(t and t(e linear pressure lossesB providin/
ener/y production values and total inco!e based on t(e turbine perfor!ance and on t(e
sale price of ener/y. A structure e;;iciency model co!putes effects of disc(ar/e losses in a
structure suc( a canal or a pipe by considerin/ a si!ple efficiency coefficient.
6(e develop!ent of an RS E:pert moduleB specifically created for researc( institutesB allows
evaluatin/ easily (ydrolo/ic and (ydraulic results. 1ime!slice simul#tion facilitates t(e
analysis of lar/e data sets wit(out overloadin/ t(e co!puter !e!ory. Scen#rio simul#tion
introduced t(e possibility of si!ulatin/ !ultiple weat(er scenarios or several sets of
para!eters and initial conditions to study t(e variability and sensitivity of t(e !odel results.
A final #utom#tic c#li<r#tion module wit( t(e S"# 'A al/orit(! calculates t(e best set of
(ydrolo/ical para!eters dependin/ on a variable ob:ective function and beco!es a 8ey
ele!ent of t(e new pro/ra!.
RS *+,#R&# pro/ra! is ;reely distri<uted to interested users. Several pro:ects and t(esis
(ave used and use t(is pro/ra! for study basins in Swit<erlandB Af/(anistanB SpainB Peru and
France. +n addition to t(e researc( center CREALP and t(e en/ineerin/ office
HydroCosmos SAB w(o currently develop RS *+,#R&#B two universities ?Ecole
Polytechni6ue (.d.r#le de L#us#nne and "niversit#t Polit=cnic# de #l=nci#@ wor8 closely
to/et(er to i!prove and use wit(in courses for *aster students of "ivil #n/ineerin/ and

6(e Routin/ Syste! ++ pro/ra! was developed at t(e $aboratory of %ydraulic "onstructions

%ernGnde< et al.B 2007@. +t was already used in different pro:ects and t(esisB suc( as by

Syste! ++. RS *+,#R&# is developed by t(e "R#A$P and %ydro"os!os SA wit( t(e
collaboration of t(e $aboratory of %ydraulic "onstructions ?$"%@ at t(e #cole Polytec(niAue
FCdCrale de $ausanne ?#PF$@ and t(e niversitat PolitHcnica de &alHncia ?P&@. +t (as been
