Pre Professional Performance Company: UGA Ballet Ensemble

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course offers the practice and experience of performing in a dance company. Training and participation
in all areas critical to the operation of a dance company, including main stage performance, touring, and
management of all production concerns.

The UGA Ballet Ensemble offers pre-professional performance and rehearsal activities as one or two variable
credit hours which are repeatable - requiring completion of two semesters before advancing.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The practice, preparation and presentation of stage performance in a dance company.

Training and participation in all areas critical to the operation of a dance company, including
rehearsals, main stage performance, touring, and management of all production concerns.

Pre-professional training for pursuing a career in concert dance.



TOPICAL OUTLINE

DANC 2850 is the first year, DANCE 3850 is the second year and DANC 4850 is the third year and DANC
5850 is the fourth year as a company member in the UGA Ballet Ensembles pre-professional company. The
dance lab will consist of training and participation in all areas critical to the operation of a dance company,
including preparation and presentation in a main stage performance, touring, and management of all
production concerns. The dance lab also includes intensive guest artist residencies requiring supplemental and
varied training, interdisciplinary collaborations and outreach.

The course syllabus is a general plan; deviations announced by the instructor may be necessary.



SPECIFIC COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum 2 semesters/1year commitment

Concurrent enrollment in technique class

Concurrent enrollment in Pointe/Pas de Deux for members performing en pointe

Consistent weight training outside of rehearsal for male members


Attendance to ALL studio rehearsals, photo shoots, technical production rehearsals and performances

Acceptance of all casting decisions made by the director or choreographer.

Commitment to understudy assigned dancers and works.


Participation in artistic and administrative tasks relative to rehearsals and performances

Provision of minimal fees relative to touring performances such as food & gas money

Maintenance of an acceptable GPA.


UGA DEPARTMENT of DANCE policy Any student who drops this course will lose performance
privileges with the department for the period of one year

GRADING POLICY

Grading is based on the instructors evaluation of the following requirements

Rehearsal Ethic/Attitude/Teamwork 30%
Improvement of Technique/Artistry/Performance 30%
Professional Behavior and Studio Etiquette 20%
Artistic and Administrative Duties 20%

Withdrawal from the course after the UGA posted drop/add deadline will result in WF

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Attendance to all studio rehearsals, technical rehearsals, photo calls and performances is mandatory.

Students are allowed one excused absence per semester in the case of illness, a death in the family, a serious
academic dilemma or other emergency circumstance which must be submitted in writing on the attached
Absence Request Leave Form prior to the absence or no later than 3 days after the absence occurs.

Absence from photo shoots theatrical rehearsals including spacing, lighting, tech and dress will not be
considered excused and may result in the loss of performance privilege.

Unexcused absences will lower the students final letter grade by 1/3
rd
per occurrence and may result in the
student being removed from works and/or assigned to an understudy position.

REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS

Three pairs of pointe shoes per year for members performing en pointe

Stage make-up kit containing all required elements

Provision of all required under garments for performance costumes and fittings
