Electric power industry is the foundation of a countrys economy, it
plays an irreplaceable role in national economic development. A
scientific and sound system planning is the premise for safe, reliable
and economical operation of the electric power system. Power
system planning can guide the construction of power sources and
power grid, can effectively recommend the schedule for
construction of electric power projects and balance the investment
for safe, stable and economical operation of power grid, can
promote fast and healthy economic development and enable sound
and high-efficiency utilization of energy and natural resources to
gain maximum economic and social benefits. Thus, a reasonable
power system planning should be proposed as early as possible.
Myanmar Power SystemPlanningis donated by China Three Gorges Corporation.
A project team is set up
composed of counterpart
engineers from Ministry
of Electric Power (MOEP)
of Myanmar and

Corporation (KHIDI).
With two-year joint efforts made by China and Myanmar counterpart
engineers, the planning study reports in three stages have been completed.
Based upon the three-stage study reports, Myanmar Power System

Total proven reserves of conventional energy resources in
Myanmar are equivalent to 11.91 billion tons of standard
coal. Economically exploitable potential of hydropower is
48,550MW and accounting for 66% of total exploitable
reserves of all energy resources. Available reserve of coal is
488 million tons and accounting for 3% of total exploitable
reserves of all energy resources. Proven reserve of oil is
1.31 billion barrels and accounting for 2% of total
exploitable reserves of all energy resources. Proven
reserves of natural gas is 2,540 billion m

In Myanmar, utilization of wind power is just at the
beginning. Exploitable potential of wind power in
Myanmar is estimated to be 365TWh/Year. Wind power
resources are rich in Chin State, Shan State, coastal
regions and hilly areas in central Myanmar.
Entrusted by MOEPKHIDI has conducted the wind
power planning work in the four regions of Yangon, Chin,
Ayeyarwady and Rakhine. KHIDIs investigation shows
the total capacity of wind power in the four regions is
more than 3,000MW. Eight towers have been set up, wind
data collected have been analyzed. KHIDI has launched
wind farm selection work.
Application of solar energy
in Myanmar remains at
initial stage. Exploitable
potential of solar energy in
Myanmar is estimated to be
5,2000TWh/Year. Central
arid areas are rich in solar
energy. In dry season, solar
radiation amounts to
5kWh/m

/Day.
Myanmar is rich in
geothermal resource, 93
geothermal sites have
been discovered.
7. Myanmar Power System Planning
Hydropower resource is the major energy resource for
Myanmar, it is mostly concentrated on the upper Ayeyarwady
River in north part and the Thanlwin River in east part.
Power loads of Myanmar are concentrated in the South-
Central Region: Mandalay, Naypyidaw and Yangon.
Owing to the contradiction between power source and load
distribution, Myanmar power grid shows a general trend of
power flow transmitted from north to south.
To meet the requirement of long-distance power transmission
with huge flow capacity, Extra-high Voltage (EHV) network
is the inevitable choice for future development of Myanmar
power grid.
Three main power transmission channels from north to south
Based on the existing 230kV transmission line, one 500kV AC double-
circuit main channel shall be built along the west and the east part
respectively, while one 600kV DC transmission channel shall be set
up for direct power transmission from north of Myanmar to Yangon.
The 500kV AC West Channel and the 600kV DC channel shall be
able to transmit the electric power from the hydropower plants on the
mainstream and tributaries of Ayeyarwady River.
The 500kV AC East Channel shall be able to transmit the electric
power from the hydropower plants on the mainstream and tributaries
of Thanlwin River.
One receiving-end looped network in south
This refers to the future 500kV double-circuit looped network
surrounding Yangon region via Talkgyi - Kamarnat - Thanylin -
Twante - Katwe Talkgyi.
It will provide a safe, reliable platform for electric power
collection and distribution at the load center.

for Improved Frequency And Voltage Control
8.Innovative Technologies for Long Distance Power Transmission
for Improved Frequency And Voltage Control
1) Power System Planning
Big load should be supplied by strong grid, strong grid
should be connected with big substations by reliable
power lines, and big substations should be supported by
big power plants.
A scientific and practical system planning is the premise
for safe, reliable and economical operation of the power
system. It is also the footstone for the FrequencyStability
andVoltageControl of the power system.
8.Innovative Technologies for Long Distance Power Transmission
for Improved Frequency And Voltage Control
2) Power Source Composition
The balance of demand & supply is critical for the
FrequencyStabilityandVoltageControl.
The installed capacity and composition of power sources
should meet the requirements for power balance, electricity
quantity balance and reasonable power flow in different
seasons and different operating modes. Sufficient backup
capacity and peak load regulating capacity should also be
considered. We suggest that some large and medium-sized
hydropower projects with over-year regulating reservoir be
constructed, some gas turbine and coal-fired power plants
should be installed near the load center.
8.Innovative Technologies for Long Distance Power Transmission
for Improved Frequency And Voltage Control
3) Power Grid Structure
High voltage AC and DC transmission lines should be applied
for long distance and huge capacity of power transmission, to
reduce the transmission loss, and also to keep the Frequency
and Voltage Stable.
The grid structure shall be reasonable and has a high
adaptability, operating flexibility and safety reliability. Proper
planning and design shall be achieved to reinforce, to
coordinate different voltage networks and to simplify the
connection scheme of low voltage networks.
8.Innovative Technologies for Long Distance Power Transmission
for Improved Frequency And Voltage Control
4) On-load Tap Changer
We suggest use on-load tap changer instead of no-load
tap changer to regulate the voltage of main transformer
in the key substations.
8.Innovative Technologies for Long Distance Power Transmission
for Improved Frequency And Voltage Control
5) FACTS: Flexible AC Transmission Systems
At present, Myanmar power grid is equipped with static
VAR compensators.
SVC and SVG dynamic reactive power compensation
equipment are very helpful to maintain reactive power
balance and voltage stability of the grid by their excellent
regulation ability and short response time.
The operation of wind farms and solar power plants in the
future will raise higher requirements on reactive power
balance and voltage stability of the grid. It is urgently
necessary to furnish the power grid with SVC and/or SVG.
8.Innovative Technologies for Long Distance Power Transmission
for Improved Frequency And Voltage Control
6) Automatic Dispatching System
Automatic Dispatching System should be established for
Myanmar Power Grid.
SCADA system should be established for NCC.
SCADA system should be established in PP.
SCADA system should be established in SS.
8.Innovative Technologies for Long Distance Power Transmission
for Improved Frequency And Voltage Control
7) Advanced Intelligent Control Applications
Automatic Generation Control (AGC)
Automatic Voltage Control (AVC)
Power System Stabilizer (PSS)
Automatic High-frequency Generator Shut- down
Automatic Low-frequency Load-shedding
Ladies and gentlemen,
We believe that the rich green energy in Myanmar will surely
be developed with the harmonious coexistence of human and
