2) Lickerts four systems of managing and
3) The managerial grid.

1) LEADERSHIP STYLES BASED ON USE OF AUTHORITY
Leadership styles on the basis of authority have been classified under following three categories
Authoritic , Democratic , Laissez faire

a) Autocratic leadership style:
This style of leadership is based on rigid control over the subordinates .Here the leaders initiates
and plans. He expects compliance and full implementation of his ideas and plans .He direct and
control them. He of course rewards the subordinates for their performance. At the same time,
he punished them and with holds the rewards, if the performance is not his satisfaction. This
way he exercises strict discipline. control authority over the subordinates. It useful in difficult
situation when the subordinates. It useful in difficult situation when the subordinates have not
developed to desirable levels.
b) Democratic leader ship style;
In contrast to the authoritarian style, in this style the leader involves all the members of the
group in decision making. He regards them as equal partners and values their participation.
He considers the participation by the nates in essential element for the success of the
6

organization. As opposed to authoritarian leader who generally practices both way
communication i.e., upward communication as well as downward communication.
c) Laissez faire leader ship style;
In this style the leader exercises minimum power control over his subordinates. He gives
them maximum freedom to work and set their goals according to their wishes. He should
give his own suggestions when wanted by the subordinate.
2) Lickerts four system of management;
System no;1;
In this system has little confidence in his subordinate. He doesnt involve the in decision making.
He used prize & punishment to motivate the subordinates. Authority is highly centralized in the
manager.
System no:2
In this system manager adopts what is known as benevolent authoritive style .He adopts
patronizing confidence and trust in subordinate. He uses a few rewards and occasional
punishment to motivate workers. Some participation in decision making is also allowed. Most
decision continues to be taken by manager himself.
System no:3
Manager in this system adopts participative approach. He has substantial but no complete
confidence and trust in subordinate. Broad policy decision are made at top. Specific decision,
however are allowed to be taken at the lower levels also
System no:4
Managers in this system, adopts participative approach. He has complete confidence and trust
in this subordinates. He involves them in decision making. The rewards are given according to
their participation. Lickert found the system no 4 approach leaders. Lickerts systems 4 has got
7

its own limitation. Empirical support for the theory has been generated almost exclusively by
Lickert and his associates. They have ignored the impact of situational variables on
management.

INDUSTRY PROFILE
Growth of tyre industry in India the tyre industry began to grow in India
may divide into three phases. In the first phase multinationals came to India
&started selling tyre. The first among them was fire store, followed by either
multinational like good year, dunlop etc.
In the second phase the multinational started their production in India &
they became first generation tyre manufacturer in India. Among the first
19

generation tyre, dunlop was the first company that started their domestic
production at Calcutta.
The third phase of India tyre industry began when Indian companies
started producing tyre, which came to be called as second generation tyre
the important among them are MRF tyres, PREMIER tyres, good year tyres,
CEAT tyres etc. they started production in the sixties later in the 1970 s he
third generation tyres started their production. The main third generation
tyres are Apollo, VIKRANT, JK MODI tyres etc. all the tyre companies, which
started operation after70s and the tyre companies which are yet to start
production are classified under the leadership style of fourth generation.
Notable among them are S.KUMAR, RADO, SREECHAKARA, BIRLA tyres etc.
market leaders in the Indian tyre industry are MRF, JK, CEAT, APOLLO,
GOODYER tyre. They are updating their strategies in order to hold market
shares & invade others.
INDIAN TYRE INDUSTRY
Tyre made in india can be broadly classified as cross play & radial. The
body of a tyre called carcass on casting is made up of layers of rubber coated
20

nylone on rayon fabric called plies the main difference between these two
types is the direction is which the ply cords are arranged and the type of
reinforcement medium used. In a cross ply tyre the, cords run across each
other or diagonally to the outer surface of the tyres. On the other hand in a
radial tyre the cords done radically from bead to bead at 90 degree angles to
the rim or along the out of surface of the tyre.
In a cross ply tyre the major reinforcement materials used are rayon &
nylon tyre lords. In a radial tyre the reinforcing medium are polyester, nylon,
fiber glass & steel. As such there is a substantial price difference between
cross ply and radial tyre. Radial tyres are 10-15% costly compared to the
cross ply ones & naturally, in india they sell less than the cross ply ones.
The radial tyre provide certain advantage like better vehicle control,
longer tyre life, cooler running and better road holding & lower fuel
consumption. They even reduce the occurrence of flat. Even then radial tyres
have not really caught on these because road condition are unsuitable for
radial tyres.
21

More over as against radials the cross plies can be retreated twice during
the life time of the tyre and given the cost of a new tyre it comes cheaper.
The over loading conditions in the truck light at & heavy commercial vehicles
is one of the factors responsible for none popularity of radial is these
segment.
Radial tyres account his only 5% of the total Indian tyre production as
against 60-80% is the development countries. The extent of radialicaton is
highest , at almost in the truck tyre segment which constitute about 75% of
the total value in production. The industry is looking at radializaton as one of
the ways to service in this falling market conditions. They are expecting 55-
60% radicalization is expected to attain only 13-15% by that time.
THE RAW MATERIALS
The type industry is material intensive raw material accounts for almost
70% of the production cost. The main raw materials for tyre are rubber
[natural & synthetic], carbon black, and nylon tyre cord& rubber chemicals.
The tyre segment accounts for a major chunk of total rubber
consumption, and is increasing, its share whereas, is developed nations, the
22

highly radicalized tyre industry consumer more of synthetic rubber than
natural rubber [the ratio is 80:20 ]in India it is just the opposite .
The important raw materials used are:
Natural rubber
Synthetic rubber
Nylon tyre cord[NTC]
Carbon black

STORAGE MATERIAL IN APOLLO TYRES

down the meaning of research as a care full investigation or inquiry
especially through search for new fact in any branch of knowledge. In
short, the search for knowledge objective and systematic methods of
finding solution to a problem to research.
31

RESEARCH DESIGN
a research design is the arrangement of condition for classification and
analysis of data in a manner that aims to combine relevance to the
research purpose with economy in procedure. In fact, the research
design is the conceptual structure within which research is conducted. A
constitutes the blue print of the collection, measurement and analysis of
the data.

DESCRIPTIVE RESARCH DESIGN
In this research, the researcher used descriptive research design. A
descriptive research design is concerned with the detail description of
certain functional variables and characteristics of a problem situation. The
major purpose of this research is the description of the state of affairs and
its exists in present.
SOURCES OF DATA
Sources of data can be classified into two ways,
32

Primary data
Secondary data
Both primary and secondary data collected for the purpose of study.

PRIMARY DATA
It refers to the first hand information which is original in character that
an investigator himself collected from the respondent.
Primary data required for the study where generated from individuals,
structures, questionnaire and also from the discussion made with people.
In this research the researcher collect primary data through interview
and questionnaire method.

SECONDARY DATA
The secondary data are those which have already being collected by
someone else, so which have already passed through the statistical
process. The main source of secondary data collection is
a) Books
b) Journals
c) Internet
33

SAMPLING

If the information is collected only from a representative part of
[sample] the population/universe, we can say that the data are collected
through sampling.
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES
In this project convenient sampling method is used for selecting
respondent. In this method the investigator choose the sample unit on the
basis of accessibility.
CONVENIENT SAMPLING
The convenient sampling techniques used in this project. A convenience
sample is obtained by selecting a convenient population unit. As the name
implies in this method, the researcher choose the sample units on the
basis of convenience or accessibility. This form of sampling is commonly
using the man of the street form for interviewing at time his associates
may be interviewed sample because they are accessible. It is one of the
important non random sampling.
SAMPLE SIZE
A sample size of 100 samples is selected for the study.
34

TOOLS OF DATA
The researcher obtained the response from these respondents by using
structured and open and closed ended questionnaire. The techniques
used for analysis and interpretations are percentage analysis pictures,
graphical representation like bar diagrams, pie diagrams, column graph,
pyramid chart etc
DATA PROCESSING AND ANALYSING INSTRUMENT
The data collected has been tabulated and the percentage of the
respondents for each factor has been calculated using tally mark
operation. Datas collected has been converted into quantitative figure.
The percentage of analysis has been done to draw the conclusion.
PERCENTAGE ANALYSIS
Percentages refer to the special kind of ratio. Percentages are used in
making comparison between two or more series of data it can also used
for compare the relative terms, the distribution of two or more series of
data. The easy and simplicity of calculating the general understanding of
its purpose and the universal applicability of the percent statistic have
made it most widely and standardize tool researchers.
35

Since the percentage reduced everything to a common based and
thereby allows meaningful comparison to make with the data. The
percentage analysis is conducted by dividing number of respondents with
tool population of sample.
Percentage = No. of respondent
Total no. of population 100
