A TASTE OF CHILE
June 23, 1977 NEWS OF DEBBIE SILVERB5RG VOL, I, ISSUE 1
WHAT'S GOOKIW3? Since graduation from Ozark Bible Collage on May
14th, I've been busy traveling and sharing with
groups of Christians from Indiana to Kansas,
about Ood's work in Chile and ray plans. The Lord has already provided some
of the support I need, $500,00 of the $1200,00 comraitted monthly support
and will provide what is needed, I'm sure. Of course, I enjoy the times to
be at home with my family and friends. This xtfeek I began shipping ray books
by mail - it's fun to try to sort them into 11 pound boxes. The rest of my
belongings will be sent by air freight in August, Next week I'll be at the
North Anerican Christian Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio - maybe I'll see you?
ON THE BACK BURNEK When I went to Chile on an internship, I sure
didn't have to concern myself with all of this
packing and preparing to be gone for three yearsl
Wow! Ajgust 23rd sometimes gets too close too quickly. That's when I'll
py out of Indianapolis for Miami, The non-stop flight will leave Miami at
1:45 A,li. on August 24th and is scheduled to arrive in Santiago, Chile at
10:00 A,M, Wednesday,
Nexjs from Chile - two new churches have already been started this year
and eight new groups are in the making. Praise the Lord! I'm anxious to see
how God will use me in teaching both non-Christians and Christians.
FROM THE SPICE RACK The format of the newsletter csme from the crea
tive rainds of two friends and one professor from
O.B.C. (Oh, he's a friend too!). Thanks! I'm
^ aunt again! Now I have a niece. Melody Jane, who joined her brother
recently on June 17, Horoe in Santiago will be with Ed &Sara Holt
and family, missionaries to Chile since 1970, It's nice to have a family
waiting for you - especially one that includes two little sisters and a
brother! Pray for; (l)no delay in getting passport and visa; (2)safe arrival
ot books and other belongings; (3)continued and increased monthly support
to help with working expenses in Chile-
IHE CHEF'S SPECIAL TOUCH God never stops teaching us. He has impressed
many things upon m.y mind and heart the past few
I am not alone. Oh, I knew God was al-
w^s there, but He's showed me that Christians from all over really care
about me and are joining with ne. I may not have any acquaintances on the
plane with me, but Christian brothers &sisters are with me as they join me
in thoughts and prayers and by sharing money that God has given them. I
have met so many wonderful Christians and have been humbled by their kind
ness, their hospitality, and their willingness to share. (II Cor, 8:1-5)

A TASTE OF CHI EE
SEPTEMBER, 197? NEWS OP DEBBIE SILVERBERG VOL. I, ISSUE 2
WHAT'S COOKING? Greetings from Santiago, Chilel This is my se
cond day here after being gone three years, but
it almost seems like I was never away. I'm
"home" again. Ed and Sara Holt, Chris and Carol DeWelt,'Und Woody and Nelda
Phillips, met me at the airport - what a happy reunioni /you've probably
noticed from the date of this news letter that I didn't leave on August 23rd
as previously planned. My visa finally arrived from New York on September 2nd
and I left on September 6th. The Itord really blessed me with a wonderful
~ thank you for your prayers! Now, I'm getting moved in, doing nece
ssary paperwork, and looking things over!
ON THE BACK BURNER Next week I'll start looking at some of the con
gregations here in Santiago and their specific
needs in the area of Christian Education - try
ing to see what is most urgent. When I shared my plans with the rest of the
tean of missionaries, they were happy to have someone working in that area.
I'll let you know what's happening when I can share something more
specific. Plans have already been made for the summer leadership training
camp in February. Yours Truly gets to teach Old Testament Survey - I'm
glad I have a few months to think about that one!
FROM THE SPICE RACK little sisters and brother, Christy-?, Brenda-
6, and Danny-1^, "helped" me unpack yesterday.
It's a bit different from dorm life! making
a call to the air freight office about my drums, I asked if the person to
whom I was speaking understood English. He said "yes" and we proceeded to
talk in ^glish. Finally, he asked if I knew Spanish. I said "yes", ex
plained it in Spanish and he understood everything at last...Each Thursday
morning the missionaries have a meeting to discuss what is happening in
building up the Kingdom, establish goals, and work out problems. Prior to
today, this Thursday gathering was called the men's meetingbut not anymore...
Please pray for: Increased support for work funds-things are super high,
maturity of the Chilean Christians and my readjustment to Chile. Thank you
for your faithful support already.
THE CHEF S SPECIAL TOUCH The past few weeks have really tested my patience.
I found that I didn't have very much! One del^
followed another in the process of getting my
visa. I got really upset sometimes - just ask ray Mom. Anyway, God knew I
needed to be aware of that weakness, and I need to work on it as it is very
necessary in the work here. He's something else, you know! At the time, I
couldn't understand why, but now I see many advantages in my delayed depart
ure. God knows our needs - even when we don't - How wonderful it is to be
long to Him!

December, 1977
Evidences of new life are all around during this spring
season. Beautiful flowers, cute puppies, budding
trees. and the most marvelous of all, new Christians!
Year-round, God touches the hearts of men, and, also, throughout the world. Sunday School
is a means we can use to teach children about the love of God, and through the children,
to reach their parents. The Chilean Christians need no one to convince them of the need
for Christian education. They are pleading for help, suggestions, and advice to fulfill
this ministry. Presently, I am helping four churches In Santiago In the area of Christian
education: In one of the churches, we are at the organization stage and In the other
three churches, we are having weekly teachers meetings. At the weekly meetings, I lead
a study on the Scripture that the teachers will be teaching to the children. Then we
work together on lesson plans for the different age groups, setting objectives, and select
ing learning activities. God Is,., also, molding the ten missionary families in Santiago,
into a unified team. We shareideas, and ourselves, with each other as we work as members
of God's team in Chile.
ON THE BACK BURNER While I enjoy working In the area of Christian educa
tion very much, I am looking forward to becoming
more involved in personal evangelism in the future.
There is still much follow-up work that must be done with graduates of the Bible corres
pondence course, "El Encuentro". The final day of school for the missionary kids Is De
cember 7th. Soon after, Cindy Shead, one of the missionary wives, and I are going to be
having classes for the eight of them in English. Both Cindy and I are really excited
about this opportunity to teach them about Jesus. The week folloyang Christmas, we will
be having a retreat with Brother DonjQeWelt and Brp. WgodrQw Phillips and their wives.
I am anticipating some great fellovrehlp arid a blessed time of learning from God's Word.
There is a strong possibility that Christian education courses will be Integrated into
the curriculum of the Leadership Training Institute, beginning this summer, at the summer
camp. The interest and demand for such classes is great among the Chileans, and really
excites me about my ministry,
FROM THE SPICE RACK I got to play "Mom for ten days while Ed and Sara
Holt went on a vacation. We came through it without
a major disaster...speaking of disasters, we've been
having- a lot of earth tremors lately. No damage done, but it kind of shakes you up...
spring also brings babies, and God has blessed our group girls since"'!ast
I wrote. ..Caris^sa^Fish, ^Idl Phillips and Sara Phillips... all'thirty^'6^ of us, counting'
kids, got to^th^T for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. The only thing untradltlohal
was the high temperature outside...the missionaries are having a Monday night fellowship
now - what a relief It is to sing praises to God in English.'
THE CHEF'S SPECIAL TOUCH
God's understanding is limitless. He cares when
we're sad. He's happy when we are rejoicing. As
members of the body of Christ, we are to be sensitive

in this niartner to the feelings of our brothers and sisters* God has been teaching me to
be more sensitive toward those around mej by putting me in situations where I aa made to
understand what other people are going through. by day, I am becoming more aware
of the needs of brothers and sisters, and am trying to minister to them in a more effec
tive way* It just comes down to denying ourselves and servin| others, being more like
