In two cases the teeth of
the dog had penetrated the

around the Eagle River Sch-

are usually from fifteen to

at all times. In almost ev-

CHEGL\K CHICKBN
"' familiar sight to motorists
along the Glenn lligh,vay ev:ery
morning is the many groups of
small children waiting to be
picked up by the school bus.
,it some of the points ex-
tremely large numbers of child
ren congregate sometimes tlven-
ty or more.
It has been brought to our
.... attention that at least at one
of these ctops the chjldrcn
are amusing themselve::; with
a very dangerous game . It is
the local version of the game
"chicken".
The rules for the game here
seem to be that when a caris
approaching the childrcn ,, ill
truce turns dashing across the
road in front of the car, the
main idea being to sec hO\v
close they allow the car to
cnme before they run out .
Onemotorist noticed this
group of children ing and
scuffling alongside the rond
and ble\v his horn to 1-:arn them,
thereupon a small boy ran out
in front of his car and across
the road. He blew his horn a
second time and another child
followed in .the path of the
first one. Then to really
complicate matters one of the
many dogs 1vho also seem to
a permanent fixture of every
bus stop dashed out into the
road and stayed there. The
driver of the car attempted
to.nfiss the dog and his car
skidded on the icy road and
he came very near plowing into
the group of children.
Needless to say this
was very shaken by this exper-
ience, and is wondering ,hat
can be done about thiH situat-
ion.
Unfortuantely the school
authorities have novjurisdict-
i0n over children before they
the bus, at this
poirt their behavior is the
responsibility of their par:
ents. (next col.)
( editorial)
But in cases like this the
parents usually are una1mre
of the behavior of the child-
fen as in most instances the
1hild lives some distance
rrom t'1e point where he board
1 he bus.
The seriousness of this mat
1er is obvious to everyone,

.'.NCHOR:.GE.: :.ccidental killing
of moose along the tracks of
the \laskn :<ai lroad has been
unusually high this winter.
According to flr . Frank,
chief dispatcher for the rail-
road at least eighty of the
have been killed by
trains in the month of
.. alone; ll'i th the total
climbing in January.
,
Frank said that attempts to
keep the moose off the trncks
have been made by putting an
auxiliary blade on the train
snob plows and clearing a sh-
oulder along the tracks for
the moose, who are attempting
to the deep crusted
snow. This has helped some,
but the animals will still
get on the tracks and Jeefuse
to get off. Even when the
engineer l is able to stop the
train in time to keep from
hitting the moose, the an-
imals will charge the locomot-
ives and usually ingure them-
selves that way.
