My brother Mike runs a camp at Raglan up on the hill
which is open to 7-16 year olds during the holidays
and is rented out by schools and other groups
throughout the year to utilise this wonderful facility
and have it occupied as much as possible throughout
the year. Camp Raglan is situated on the bush-clad
slopes of Mt Karioi and has views of the Tasman sea
and beach. The camp is 6km beyond Raglan at 578
Wainui Road, on the way to Whale Bay.
I always try and take time out of our busy Amped4Life
schedule to make time for family and helping my
brother out. The age group that come to survival
camp are 11-16 years of age and so a bit more the
audience I am used to speaking to. I love this camp
as it oers so much for the young people. They oer
many activities including Condence Course
Trampoline Flying Fox Volley Ball (indoor & outdoor)
Basketball Table tennis Archery BMX Bikes Native
Bush Surng Sand Castle Competition and heaps of
other activities.
The camp runs for seven days and so it gives my wife
and daughter some special time together while I take
my son Seth to camp for a week. I was in charge of 6
guys and at the end of the week many new and lasting
friendships had been made. Thanks Mike for the
awesome opportunity to share.

A great time was had by all as I spoke to a group of a 30-40+ elderly folk from
the Greenwood Park Life Style Community in Welcome Bay. They absolutely
loved our message and were so eager to hear about our work, but I must say
that I drew from their knowledge and experience on many other life issues. So
much collective wisdom in the room. I love sharing with these wonderful people
and it never ceases to amaze me what questions they ask and the personal
experiences they have had or have members of their own family struggling with
substance abuse issues.

Hey, so you came to my school the other day
(Pukekohe high school) and I just really wanted
to say thank you. Honestly, it helped so much! I
went home later that day because it really made
me think and I wrote a letter to my mum and it
made her cry. Thank you so so much! Really! I was
going through a bit of a hard time with my family
and you know how it goes and I think I may have
depression but you really did help me! Thank you
KATELYN STUDENT-PUKEKOHE HIGH SCHOOL
Im Kelli from Waihi College and I would just like
to say a huge Thank-you on behalf of our school
for your valuable time spent with us today! I loved
every bit of your presentation and it meant a lot
and taught me a lot. I will now take much more
care and put lots of thought into what I do. And
I will denitely always remember there will be
consequences for my actions good or bad. Keep
up the awesome work Pat.
KELLI STUDENT WAIHI COLLEGE
Hey Pat, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for
coming to talk to year 13 at Mahurangi College. I
know we all left that hall with greater knowledge
of what is out there and the eects it has on us
personally and society. I know I was touched by
some of the things you had to say and I think I
could speak for the rest of the year when I say that.
I am so fortunate to have heard you speak. So thank
you again
ANGELA-STUDENT -MAHURANGI COLLEGE
Hey Pat. My name is Leilani . and im sixteen
years old. Ive been smoking weed since I was
fourteen and only recently have I begun to realize
it was a problem. Alot of your stories resonated
with me like having an alcoholic father walk out and
being a drug dealer. Recently I tried to overdose
at a party. I took alot of pills, drank heavily and
passed out. I was lucky to have people there that
cared about me and saved my life. Your talk have
given me the motivation to give up weed and ease
up on the drink. I have alot of respect for you
and the positive impact you are making on kids
everywhere. Take care.
STUDENT MAHURANGI COLLEGE
Thought Id text you instantly. My names Sammy,
in yr. 13 sat in front row. Your talk was legit. I feel
we need more people like you who are willing to
pass on their experiences in a very real way. Ive
had addictive traits in my life, battled them since
13. Im now 18 and only just this year Ive come to
terms with s..t. Replacing drugs with lifting weights
I feel and look so much better. That doesnt mean
It was an outstanding and captive presentation
in which all of our students were engaged and
were hanging o Pats every word. Pat has an

temptation doesnt come about in my life. I do
slip up every so often but then resort back to the
weights. Dont really know what Im tryna say here..
but people like yu amaze me. Talking to people like
yu is so benecial.
STUDENT DELASALLE COLLEGE
Thank you so much for your talk. I really can relate
to everything you were saying about only you can
determine your future. Finally a speaker who
actually speaks reality! I think your talk was
something a lot dierent from the others cant quite
put my nger on it though, thanks again! Now its
just up to me to get my life together and put the
work in.
STUDENT RUTHERFORD COLLEGE
Hey im one of the students from Waihi college and
was touched by your speech. I have had a hell of a
life, worse than people realise, like you i have lost
friends and family to drugs i lost my dad and am
losing my mum to cancer. Thank you for the speech.
STUDENT-WAIHI COLLEGE
Hey Pat, my name is Jordan and I was just in youre
audience in Pukekohe high and I have to say thank
you. Your speech was extremely moving, Im 18 and
Ive been a reman for 2 years and Ive been to car
accidents such as the one showed in the video you
showed and each time I see that video it gets harder
and harder but each time it makes me stronger.
So thank you for showing us a part of your life, it
really does mean a lot. Cheers mate, Jordan.
STUDENT- PUKEKOHE HIGH SCHOOL
Hey Pat... Just wanted to say a huge Thankyou
for coming and talking to us today. It made
me realise whats important in life and how
precious it is... You have been through so much
and taught me heaps, would love to talk to you
about any problems i have....
STUDENT-RUTHERFORD COLLEGE
It was an outstanding and captive presentation
in which all of our students were engaged and
were hanging o Pats every word. Pat has an
ability to deliver key messages that enhance an
adolescents life in a way that the students could
connect to. I was blown away by the eectiveness
of the real life stories and the impact these had
on the students. The students were buzzing as
they left the hall, and a number of students have
been in contact with Pat since. The content
is a lasting memory for the students and
his ability to engage all of the students is
commendable. I will denitely be contacting Pat
for more presentations in the future as I believe
they are benecial in helping our students make
informed decisions and know the consequences
of these decisions for their future life.
STEPH WARD-HEAD OF HEALTH-PAKURANGA COLLEGE
Pat came into Papakura High School today and
did a presentation. Im a year 13 student and
I have a year 12 brother. Pat really got me, my
partner, brother and friends thinking and it lead
to great discussions on where wed like to go in
life, my brother and I grew up in a broken home
with an abusive father and mother when we were
younger, our biological father doesnt have much
to do with me and my 4 other siblings now but my
step dad took the role of a father as well as Pat
did. My brother and I decided to stop smacking
our siblings when they play up, we gured if we
stop now then we can stop the pattern forever
because we dont want to raise our kids that way.
My partner and I discussed what kind of home
wed like to raise kids in if it got to that point Id
like to thank him for his talk, I didnt ll out a
survey but what he said really did have an aect
on us kids and I think it was denitely needed -
To whoever reads this, thank you for caring
and stay safe god bless
STUDENT-PAPAKURA HIGH SCHOOL
My name is Shania. Im a year 11 student from
Pakuranga College. I really enjoyed your visit to
our school today. It really made me think about

things in a lot more detail then what i normally
would and to consider what the consequences
might be from my decisions that i make. Your talk
also has made me realised that life is worth living
even through all the rough times and that things
will always get better and people will always be
there to help. I just need to nd the right person.
Yea im guessing that I kind of just needed to hear
it from someone that im not close to or not related
to for me to be able to actually believe it all and to
be able to take it all in. You are a gift to the world
and people like me are lucky to have you come
to our schools and able to talk to us and make us
see life more clearly and that life isnt just one big
misunderstanding. If It werent for people like you a
huge inspiration to my life along with a band I listen
to. But you are the biggest inspiration out of the
people that have come to schools to talk to us.
STUDENT-PAKURANGA COLLEGE
Hey Pat, my name is Chester and I was at the
presentation you gave yesterday at Pakuranga
College. Just wanted to say that I found your
experiences and your advice very insightful and
genuine. It helped me to think more about the
friends I keep and the choices I make. I wish you all
the best for the future! Student-Pakuranga College
From the very rst word of his presentation, Pat
caught his audiences attention and had them
conned to the edge of their seats. He showed
a lot of passion about what he was saying and
quickly built up a good relationship with the
students. He was honest and spoke from the
heart; which was enthralled in a respectful manner
from our students. His powerful words and life
experiences about the eects of drugs and alcohol
provided deep insight for our students. After the
presentation, it was evident that students had
learnt about the implications of abusing drugs
and alcohol by the discussions happening in the
classroom and playground. As a teacher I am
grateful for a presenter like Pat for sharing his life
experiences and the consequences that come
with poor decision making. His words were truly
inspiring and I know this will have an impact on
our students.
TROY ENGLAND-TEACHER (PAPAKURA HIGH SCHOOL)
I attended the amped4life presentation with my
junior class on Monday. I was so impressed that I
have recommended to 3 other colleagues in other
schools to request Pat to give the presentation
at their institutions. After the talk I personally
shook Pats hand and thanked him for such a frank,
honest, inspirational talk. He connected with the
students in a way that most cant and delivered
some of the most important messages that our
young people need to hear. I would love to see Pat
return to our school and reinforce his message
with a whole series of lectures. An inspiration to
teachers and students, I hope he can continue
his important work forever more.
CHERYL MITCHELL SCIENCE HOF PAPAKURA HIGH SCHOOL
It was an immense privilege to have Mr Pat Buckley
presenting to our Huntly College community today.
Pats message was powerful, dynamic and personal,
I felt as if I lived and experienced every step of Pats
life story. Pat spoke at a level every student could
identify with; the graphic pictures conrmed the
words that rolled o his tongue. Pat was convincing,
passionate and sobering. I found the work with
St John exemplied each story and gave a nal
outcome, no stone was left unturned.
From a personal perspective, Pat opened some old
scars these quickly healed with his empathetic
approach and the reiteration that everyone has
choices.
Thank you to Pat, for generously and selessly
sharing your life experiences with our community,
you touched many lives and I now feel an integral
part of your journey. I will be forever grateful for
Pats message today. Pats presentation has left
us richer with the knowledge he shared. Pat is a
legend, one of lifes true taonga [treasures]
