Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop

So, what are they anyway?

Illustrator and Photoshop is a raster-based image editing software that allows users to modify,
analyze and adjust the pixels of an image.

Key Terms & Concepts:
Vector based an image that is mathematically
created without the use of pixels. It is resolution
independent. Shapes and text are often vector
based images that can change size without losing
clarity. Changing the size of a font in a word processing program is
a good example of this.

Raster based an image that is comprised of pixels that depend on
PPI (pixels per inch) and resolution quality for clarity. It allows
extensive detail and gradients in color to be seen, as in a photograph.

Pixel the smallest part of a digital image that has a
specific color assigned to it.
PPI Pixels per Inch. Equivalent to DPI dots per inch.
Resolution the amount of pixels that exist in a square inch (i.e. 300 PPI)
- The lower the resolution, the smaller the file and image size, and vice-versa, the
higher the resolution the larger the file size.
- Internet images operate at 72 DPI.
- Images above 300 DPI do not gain much clarity. 300 DPI is the optimum working
resolution.
Digital space, including files, software and hard drive space, is measured in kilobytes,
megabytes and gigabytes:
- KB Kilobyte
- most 1 page word or text documents are about 25 KB.
- MB Megabyte (1000 Kilobytes)
- one CD holds 705 MB.
- the average size of an MP3 is about 4 MB.
- GB Gigabyte (1000 Megabytes)
- A 4 GB IPod will hold 1,000 4 MB songs.
- A 60 GB IPod will hold about 15,000 songs.
