Madras and now Chennai enters the 375
th
year
- A Chronicle!
If we trace the ancient history of Chennai, it is heart rendering and
we all should feel proud of its glory. It is one of the very important
trade centres of the British India and got into prominence under Robert
Clive, then Governor General of Indiawho set foot here and then
expanded the British Empire through his sheer diplomacy other than
the trade for which they ventured in. Madras became the first in all
fields right from civic administration, education etc. Chennaipattinam
was a small fishermen hamlet which was under the direct control of
Vijayanagar rulers under whom Raja of Chandragiri, a place near
Chennai, ruled this place well before 119 years back of the birth of East
India Company in India.
VenkatagiriNaicker was the local chieftain of Poonamallee and
Chennaipattnam with a 5 km periphery was bought by the East India
Company after a long search upto Pondicherry.Francis Deyand Andrew
Hogam made it as their headquarters for the trade dealings. Francis
Dey and Andrew Hogam, the company officials hit the deal with the
key assistance of PeriThimmappa, the notable local businessman. The
place was called as Madras by the British and it was a barren land
without any notable habitation. Francis Dey, Andrew Hogam and
PeriThimmappa were the founders of great Madras which has 375
years of history to cherish.
In 1947, Madras had become the capital of compositeMadras
state comprising parts of Andhra and Kerala and Karnataka. In 1923,
the periphery of Madras was barely 80 square k.ms. and it was
expanded to129 square k.ms. In 2011, the Chennai City was expanded
to a periphery of 426 square K.ms. comprising of 8 Municipalities, 8
major panchayats and 25 panchayats and merged with Chennai
Corporation. Madras state was rechristened as Tamilnadu state and in
1996, Madras was made as Chennai.
The first English Hospital was formed in 1664 which was inside
Fort St.George. Then in 1842, it was transferred to the present site
which was called as Government General Hospital where treatment
was offered equally to Indians also. The first Madras Corporation was
formed in 1668 in Ripon Buildings which has the distinction of the
first in the country. It was the first Local Body in the whole of Asia.
Madras also was the battleground for wars with Bijapur Sultan,
Aurangazeb and British got Madras with a treaty with Aurangazeb.
The Fort St. George was constructed between 1756 and 1783 at a cost
of 77 lakhs which had a mint, a hospital, armoury, a stone house and a
church.Madras was once captured by the French and the English
regained it in 1748 by a treaty with them in exchange of an island in
North America.

P
rime Minister
Na r e ndr a Modi s 68
t h
Independence day
address from the ramparts of Red
Fort, New Delhi is something
different, something special and
invigorating. It evokes a sense of
new thinking, belonging and
responsibility for achieving a
faster and sustainable growth
path and empowering the poor
and needy to be better citizens.
He is the first one to address
in the open arena without using
bullet proof protection which
shows his courage and nearness
to the people. Normally,
Independence Day speeches by
Prime Minister fall into the
category of mandatory prepared
texts and take over events but his
speech was extempore. It was
more like a running commentary
than a cricket match.
The speech was mostly
watched, mostly tweeted and
mostly talked about lists
dragging the crowd with rapt
attention.The common man was
allowed to participate in the great
national event.He was attired in
a Bandhini Kutch origin, a purely
Swadeshi dress. He entered
exuding confidence. He verily
emphasized and said I am not
Prime Minister, I am first servant
reminding the true state of elected
representatives as servants of the
people who have chosen them to
act on their behalf which shows
his modesty that drew huge
applause from the crowd.
Gandhiji was the first to
proclaim that the President is the
chief servant. He began with a
salute to those who sacrificed
everything for the nation. He
suggested that a nation is not
made by great men but built by
its people, built by its soldiers,
farmers, youth, workers, teachers,
scientists and martyrs. Politicians
and government do not build a
nation but they merely rule it. A
good speech is judged by its style
and substance but above all its
impact. His message was
abundantly clear without any
hype back to the basic.
Modi said that leaders are
meant to take responsibilities
seriously which come from
popular mandate or nomination.
The keyword is Service in a
democracy just or seva or service
for a true spiritual seeker to reach
salvation. He added that I am not
here to rule, I am here to serve
the masses.
He said loud that small steps
taken quickly taken across the
country can have a greater impact
than big schemes implemented
slowly with tardy progress. Just
imagine that 125 crore people
take a step forward, the country
will move 125 crore steps forward
and he offered to work harder as
Indias Prime Minister. He laid
emphasis on a dirt free India as
on a digital India. He promised

changes in governance, a swifter
government in the place of
bureaucratic establishment,
pulling in different directions for
a red tapism, corruption and
malfeasance putting the people
all sorts of sufferings and
difficulties.
He started with the basics
that he intended to ensure
separate toilets for girls and boys
in all schools in the country. He
called for corporate houses to
observe total social
responsibility of serving the
societyand assistance in this
noble and onerous task rather
than being always in profit
motives. He spoke at length to a
shared national character by
speaking to shared shame like
rapes.
He cautioned that rapists are
also somebodys sons. He also
has parents if restrictions are
placed on sons like daughters,
there will be no rapists. With good
governance and development as
his buzzwords for progress, he
announced PradhanMantri Jan
DhanYojana scheme aimed at
financial inclusion that would link
the poor with the bank account
and provide them a debit card
and insurance cover worth Rs 1
lakh.
He announced the big
reform of dismantling the
Planning Commission which is in
vogue for the past 50 years which
is adopted to Socialist Russias
style will be soon carved into a
new institution will have new
body and outlook for a greater
role to states for which he
welcomed suggestions from the
public. Despite his big push for
change, he lustily paid
encomiums to his predecessors
the great works done by them for
attaining development since
independence which shows his
political maturity and acumen. He
voiced his concern for moving
forward on the basics of
consensus rather than on the
basis of majority mark in parties.
He vehemently attacked casteism
and communism as poison which
acts as a great hindrance to
progress which should be totally
rooted out from the society.
He attacked communalism
that there should be a 10 year
moratorium on violence. On
terrorism, it is done by misguided
youth who should renounce
violence and should strive to take
to the path of peace. What is
needed is an initiative of creative
thinking for an optimum
utilization of youth capability.
He exhorted the
manufacturers of products and
gave a slogan of No defect, No
effect. A product should be of
high quality and should be
environmentally sensitive. He
called for Made in India slogan
for achieving global excellence
and new dream of Swadeshi.
There should be more impetus in
export oriented manufacturing
units like China, Taiwan and Korea
since the country is spending
billions and billions of dollars on
oil imports, electronic goods and
iron and steel implements. He
called for manufacturing
revolution for financial inclusion
and digital makeover. He then
examines the inwards of society
Viz. agricultural suicides which is
a scar and could not be a decent
society.
The tenor of his speech was
about sanitation, dirt, toilets and
cleanliness attempting to evoke
everyday civics. He laid emphasis
for model villages to drag rural
India for attaining all sorts of
developments and urged every
M.P for the cause. Overall he was
very cautious of addressing all
Indians as directly as possible.
He sent a stern message
across the border too. If our
ancestors could throw the
colonizer out, together cannot we
just get along now? Instead of
internally fighting each other, let
us fight poverty altogether. How
India renew itself and face the
challenges can be seen in his true
implementation for building a
strong India.

instead make the people to lead a
healthy life. It is to give equal
rights to all people irrespective of
religion, creed and gender and
make them to participate equally
in the national development. Our
motto should be to give
unfettered freedom for ordinary

development. Let us keep united
in the service of the nation and
follow his ideals in full measure.
