ABSTRACT

Maryono. INTUITION CHARACTERISTICS OF STUDENTS IN SOLVING

MATHEMATICS PROBLEMS ON COMPARISON SUBJECT REVIEWED FROM
COGNITIVE STYLE AND GENDER DIFFERENTIATION (Research held at SMP
Negeri 1 Kaliwungu kab. Semarang Academic Year 2013/2014). Thesis. Education and
Teacher Training Faculty, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. July 2014.
The objectives of this research are: (1) to find out the intuition characteristics of male
students in SMP Negeri 1 Kaliwungu which have field independent (FI) cognitive style in
solving the problems of essay questions on comparison subject, (2) to find out intuition
characteristics of female students in SMP Negeri 1 Kaliwungu which have field independent (FI)
cognitive style in solving the problems of essay questions on comparison subject, (3) to find out
the intuition characteristics of male students in SMP Negeri 1 Kaliwungu which have field
dependent (FD) cognitive style in solving the problems of essay questions on comparison subject,
(4) to find out the intuition characteristics of male students in SMP Negeri 1 Kaliwungu which
have field independent (FI) cognitive style in solving the problems of essay questions on
comparison subject.
This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The research subject is VII E class of
SMP Negeri 1 Kaliwungu and it is determined using purposive sampling technique. Subject
selection is based on two criteria, these are: (1) it is on the category of field independent (FI) and
field dependent (FD) cognitive style (2) gender (males, females). In this research, two students
are chosen with the category of field independent (FI) cognitive style which consists of male and
female students, and two students with the category of field dependent (FD) cognitive style
which consists of male and female students. Technique of collecting data used in this research is
task-based interview, meanwhile the data validity is using time triangulation technique. Data
analysis consists of three activities include data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion.
Based on the analysis result, data shows that characteristics of students intuition of class
VII SMP Negeri 1 Kaliwungu in solving mathematics problems on comparison are: (1) in
understanding the problem, the male Field Independent (FI) subject using affirmatory intuition
with coerciveness intuition, the female Field Independent (FI) using affirmatory intuition with
intrinsic certainty intuition, the male Field Dependent (FD) subject without using intuition, and
the female Field Dependent (FD) subject using affirmatory intuition with self evident intuition;
(2) in making accomplishment planning, the male Field Independent (FI) subject using
anticipatory intuition, the female Field Independent (FI) subject using anticipatory intuition, the
male Field Dependent (FD) subject using intuition, and the male Field Dependent (FD) subject
using anticipatory intuition; (3) in doing accomplishment planning, the male Field Independent
(FI) subject without using intuition, the female Field Independent (FI) subject using anticipatory
intuition, the male Field Dependent (FD) subject without using intuition, and the female Field
Dependent (FD) subject using anticipatory intuition; (4) in checking back the answer, the male
Field Independent (FI) subject using conclusive intuition, the female Field Independent (FI)
subject using conclusive intuition, the male Field Dependent (FD) subject without using intuition,
and the female Field Dependent (FD) subject using conclusive intuition.
