This document provides instructions for extracting benthic taxonomic data from the EPA's STORET database for samples collected by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. It describes a 6 step process: 1) Go to the STORET query criteria page, 2) Select the geographic location by county or HUC code, 3) Select the NCDENR as the organizing body, 4) Select the date range or leave blank, 5) Select benthic macroinvertebrates as the community sampled, and 6) Download the results zip file and open the tab-delimited BioResults text file in Excel.

Extracting NCDENR Benthic Taxonomic Data from STORET
Step 1. Go here: http://ofmpub.epa.gov/storpubl/dw_pages.querycriteria Step 2. Select Geographic Location. There are several options here. If restricting by county, first select NORTH CAROLINA for the State Name, then press [Look Up] to select from the county names displayed (you can hold down [Ctrl] to select more than one county from the list). Restricting by 8-digit HUC is also useful. Click [Look Up] then select from the list (in HUC code order). HUCs represented in North Carolina are: HUC_8 HU_8_NAME

Step 3. Select Organizations. Go to Option 2 under Organization, Station & Project. Enter NCDENR in the Organization Search box, then click on [Search]. Four entries should result. Click on the first entry, then hold down [Shift] and click on the last entry. This will highlight the four entries. Hit [Select]. The result should look like this:
Step 4. Select Date Range. Go to the section Date, Administrative Filters. This part should be straight-forward. If you want all records for a given area, dont enter anything to this section. Step 4. Select Community Sampled. Go to the section Activity Intent and Community Sampled. In the box on the right select Benthic Macroinvertebrates. Step 5. Go to the bottom of the page and click on [Result Download].

Step 6. A new page will open. The only part that needs to be filled out is this:
Finish. If you select immediate processing you should get two messages fairly quickly. The second message of the two will give a link to a zip file that can be downloaded. There will be two files in there; you want the BioResults. Once extracted, open that text file in Excel (it is a tab delimited file). There will be a bunch of fields there you wont need. The most important ones are: Station ID, Station Latitude, Station Longitude, Activity Start (the sample date), Subject Taxon, and Result Value as Text.
