Paragraph Assignment #1 Summary Paragraph

Scientific Notation and Constellations

The distance from earth to the stars in constellations is so great that we

often use scientific notation to write that distance in miles. In math class, you
will be learning how to write scientific notation. Then, you will be using it to tell
the distance to some of the stars in a constellation that you have chosen. Each
constellation has an interesting story behind it. You will be researching your
constellation and learning the story behind it. Then, you will be summarizing
that story in your own words. Your summary will be a paragraph that is seven
to ten sentences long. We will be using the writing process. I have provided a
writing process worksheet for you. I look forward to reading about your
constellation.

Pegasus
Have you ever seen a horse in the night sky? There is a beautiful constellation called Pegasus. To
begin with, Pegasus was created when Perseus slayed Medusa. It just so happened that a few drops of
her blood fell into the sea. The blood mixed with white sea foam, and Pegasus the horse was created.
Some time had passed when a warrior by the name of Bellerophon found Pegasus and attempted to ride
him to Mt. Olympus. Zeus was not at all happy to see this. So, he sent a gadfly to bite Pegasus. When
the fly bit Pegasus, Bellerophon got bucked off. In the end, Pegasus continued to Mt.
Olympus where he supposedly still remains. Be sure to check the night sky for this special horse!
