hen she was in high school,
Kelly Everhard watched old-
er students march off to col-
lege, take out thousands of
dollars in loans and then
graduate into an economy where jobs were
scarce. For Everhard, it didnt make sense. So
she skipped college, went to trade school, and
learned to repair cars. She now works as pro-
duction manager at Anthonys Auto Body in
Shrewsbury. The economy got so bad, said
Everhard, 28, of Keyport. I saw so many people
going to college and wasting time and money

ATLANTIC CITY Last hand, the pit boss called out
at the lone blackjack table still taking action at the
Showboat Casino and Hotel, which closed Sunday after-
noon after 27 years.
Bets were placed, the dealer flipped over the jack of
hearts to the chagrin of all at the table. Spirits picked
back up when she next turned over the four of spades,
giving the house 14. And when the jack of spades was
added next, a small crowd that had gathered around the
table to watch a little bit of Atlantic City history let out a
cheer along with the players who had profited from the
bust.
Afterward, dealers embraced familiar customers,
and slot attendants and security personnel smiled and
hugged and whispered well wishes to each other. Many
people players and employees walked off the
124,700 square-foot casino floor with tears in their eyes.

TRENTON A controversy that has played out in the
municipal building in Manalapan and the Hall of Rec-
ords in Freehold is now set to take center stage in court
here as former Manalapan Mayor Andrew Lucas goes
on trial on criminal charges related to a questionable
land deal that netted him nearly $1.2 million in taxpayer
money.
Lucas trial on charges contained in an 11-count fed-
eral indictment is scheduled to begin in U.S. District
Court on Sept. 8. The process of selecting a jury for the
trial is set to begin on Wednesday, officials said.
Lucas, 37, a Republican who served on the Manala-
pan Township Committee from 2005 until his resigna-
tion last October, has come under scrutiny since 2010,
when, as the townships mayor, he first applied for pub-
lic farmland preservation money for property he owns
