teachers journal
We were the members of the research group. We
kept a journal in which we recorded our thoughts
and reflections about all process, mainly, the
lessons. These journals were intended to construct
an academic view of our practices (Barbour, 2008).

CLASS OBSERVATIONS
During the lessons, two researchers interchanged their roles
as observers and teachers.
QUESTIONNAIRES

Students Background.
2
Learners Current Motivation.
3

IN- DEPTH INTERVIEWS
Two in-depth interviews (Kvale, 1996) were carried
out with the participants at the end of each lesson
and after finishing the intervention in order to
validate the information gathered by the other
instruments and, also, to provide individual
perspectives of the lessons taught.
Including social and cultural aspect
of the target language increases
students motivation.
I like to know about peoples life style
because I know more expressions from the
U.K now. The class were more interesting
for me.
Social and cultural aspects of the
target language help students to have
an open mind regarding aspects like
values and social issues.
Colombia and the U.K are different. In
football matches, we can see that people do
not act violently. British people are very
polite. They do not hurt others. I like that.
INCREASING MOTIVATION THROUGH the
inclusion of socio-cultural aspects in
L2 lessons help students improve
academic performance positively.
I did homework because this topic really
likes me. I was waiting to come to my
English class again. I love when you bring
songs for the class. I get a 5 because I love
music.
Students motivated by the implementation
of social-based and cultural-based lessons
tend to have fewer difficulties with regard
to self-confidence, shyness, stage fright
and the like.
I always want to participate because I
know about the topic.
It was found that when it comes to implementing lessons focused on
aspects of the target culture students -in their majority- feel
motivated to learn the target language.

CONCLUSIONS
CONCLUSIONS
If students have the possibility to learn a language integrated with
those aspects, they would have a more clear vision of the world as a
multicultural environment.
CONCLUSIONS
From the findings of this study, it can be concluded that motivation is
increased positively when including social and cultural aspects in L2
lessons.
