The ceramics industry in the UK might not be as thriving as it was
pre the Industrial Revolution, but we do have a number of talented
factories producing very fine designs and high quality glazes in this
country. The potteries collection is hand finished in Stoke on Trent
and is based on our amazing archive of 16th and 17th century delft
tiles held at our HQ in Oxfordshire. Meanwhile the tiles produced
for our collaboration with London Transport to celebrate the 150th
anniversary of the Underground, are made in Ironbridge at a tile
works that for generations has manufactured some of the finest
ceramics available.
Shape and pattern has been at the forefront of our minds recently.
The star and cross of the Bazaar range is a shape known from
antiquity and was inspired by a visit to the Louvre where we saw the
amazing Islamic galleries. The Bazaar Khamees feel very Mid-Century
modern when seen tiled up (see page 56).
The Rhombus design creates a gorgeous look that we feel is perfect
for kitchens and hallways, Malmo porcelain is a cubed effect tile,
whilst the hand painted design on Trellis almost seems to stand out
from the wall. Hexagons continue to feel exciting and graphic. We
have added Hex, a porcelain perfect for floors, and in our very
popular Marrakech collection we felt it time we added a hexagon
too, seen at left in stunning Grey.
Surface finish is all important too. Furnace porcelain replicates beaten
metal panels whilst deco glass is a tile that feels beautifully evocative
of romantic restaurants and intimate boudoirs. North Beach
porcelain, that cleverly looks just like polished marble, is set to
become a classic in its own right.

Although we loved these tiles for their Spanish charm
they look right at home in the Victorian and 20th century

STONE
& SLATE
HONED
A lovely soft feel is achieved by careful surface finishing
to create a smooth subtle sheen to the stone.
POLISHED
Stone that has been polished to a high gloss finish almost
with a reflective quality, for a sleeker look.
ANTIQUED
To create a time-worn finish the surface is brushed and
the edges are rounded to give an antique appearance.
SANDBLASTED AND BRUSHED
As it sounds, sandblasting is the process of firing small
grains at the stone creating an aged finish whilst wire
brushes finish the stone for a natural worn look.
FILLED AND UNFILLED
Filled tiles have the voids and natural holes in the stone
prefilled with resin. Any pits or natural voids in an unfilled
tile will require filling with grout during installation.
TUMBLED
Here the stone is literally tumbled to help produce a
more aged and 'worn in' appearance.
FLAMED
A textured or antiqued finish is achieved by submitting
the surface of the tile to high temperature flames.
To the layman, stone can seem a bit of a mystery and is a
term often used to describe a number of materials,
including limestone and marble. Below is a description of
some of the different finishing styles employed in
production.

of different uses. Please see below the definition of each category:
Wall - Suitable for use on the wall, please check the chart to
ensure suitability for wet areas, etc.
Floor - Suitable for use on the floor and able to withstand a
reasonable amount of traffic.
Kitchens - Suitable for use in a busy family kitchen.
Bathrooms - Suitable for use in a busy family bathroom as a
decorative wall or floor finish (check suitability) that is not expected
to be excessively wet (check shower suitability and wet room floor
suitability if the tiles intended use is to include these areas).

provided the tiles are installed at least 30cm from the heat source.
The heat may still cause crazing and smoke, wood sap and other
fuel by-products may stain or discolour the tiles.
External - Due to the risk of damage caused by frost, we
generally do not recommend our tiles for use outside. Should
you have a specific query, please contact our technical
department on 01295 814271.
Swimming pool - Suitable for use within a swimming pool where
tiles are continuously submerged.
Swimming pool surrounds - Suitable for use around the edge of
a swimming pool with care.
Worktops - Suitable for use as a food preparation or bathroom
worktop. Please note that in this environment it is still necessary
to use appropriate chopping boards/pot stands.
Over underfloor heating - Suitable for use over the Fired Earth
underfloor heating systems.
Steam room and saunas - Suitable for use in a steam room or
sauna, floor or wall. Please check the chart to ensure no
exceptions apply.
CHARACTERISTICS
Colour variation - Shade and colour variation can occur as a
result of the products being made from natural materials and/or
from one batch to another. Please ensure sufficient tiles are
ordered on one order as we cannot guarantee that further
product will be available from the same batch. Please note a single
sample should not be taken as an accurate indication of colour.
Our sales team can guide you with examples of the colour
variation from one sample to another. In addition, all our tiles have
been assessed for colour variation and have been graded 1 to 5
dependant on the extent of variation you should anticipate:

Crazing - The tile will be delivered with a crazing (fine cracks
running through the glazed finish) or the glaze is likely to craze
over time due to changes in the environment. These tiles are
developed to have this characteristic and therefore this is not
deemed to be a product fault.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRODUCT
The advice given in this chapter, including suitability, appearance, application etc., is all given on the basis that the tiles are installed with
appropriate products and have been fitted in accordance with our installation guides. All our guides can be downloaded from our

Requires sealing - The product is porous and requires sealing to
protect the tile from water ingress and/or staining.
Other characteristics - Other than colour variation some of our
products are also subject to minor chips, blemishes and pin holes.
In many instances these imperfections are considered a desirable
characteristic of the tile and should not be viewed as a fault.
Our store sales team can talk you through the expected
characteristics of your tile selection to ensure you are happy
before placing your order.
The chosen grout colour and joint width can greatly affect the
overall appearance of the tile installation. Please ensure you have
considered your choice carefully and ask in store for examples of
our grout colours. It is important to have a joint to allow for
movement (unless otherwise specified) in the structure of your
installation. Tiles should not butt against one another. See our price
guide or website for grout joints.

or more modern depending on the stone you choose. For a selection of our stone ranges we have two classic pattern options; Verona
Opus and 3 Tile Pattern, as illustrated below, helping you to achieve a stunning floor. Whichever you choose, its important to lay out an
area of the complete pattern to confirm grout joint sizes required for installation. For other floor tile pattern layouts please speak to
our showroom staff, who are always on hand to help.

Please note that the dimensions listed in this catalogue are
approximate and may be subject to a degree of inaccuracy.
They are intended as a guide only and may change without notice.
The number of tiles supplied per square metre for a particular
sized tile may differ from one range to another due to the
allowance given with some tiles for width of grout joints. For
information on tiles per square metre and recommended grout

SUMMARISED TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Order Amendments/Cancellations: Orders (except special order
items) may be cancelled at any time before any agreed delivery
date. Amendments to orders can be made at any time up to the
packing day. Please contact your showroom for assistance.
Order Collection from Showrooms: Small orders up to 50kg in
weight can be delivered to your local showroom for collection.
Please arrange to collect your goods within 10 working days. If you
need assistance loading the product into your vehicle please
contact the showroom in advance as team members are not
permitted to leave the showroom unattended. Orders left in store
for longer than 10 working days may be returned to the
warehouse for safe storage.
Delivery: Please advise our home deliveries team if access to the
delivery address will be difficult for an 8ft 6in wide, 30ft long, high-
sided vehicle. Wherever possible, deliveries will be made using our
own fleet of vehicles with a two man crew. Where a carrier
service is required i.e. overseas deliveries, small parcels or express
deliveries, we will use a carefully selected carrier service. These
deliveries are made to the nearest access point to the delivery
address. If you have any concerns regarding this matter, please
contact Home Deliveries on 01295 814313.
Checking Your Order: Please check your order within 10 working
days of receipt. We reserve the right to refuse claims for damaged
or missing goods made after this time.
We strongly advise you to arrange delivery at least 10 working
days in advance of any installation work to allow you sufficient
time to check your order and report any incorrect, delayed,
damaged or postponed deliveries. Where stock availability permits
we aim to replace goods within two working days. We sadly
cannot accept responsibility for lost working time.
Returns Policy (excluding special order items): The following
items, returned in good condition to a Fired Earth showroom
within 28 days of purchase will be refunded in full with proof of
purchase: Tile samples, wood samples, unopened tins of paint and
bathroom accessories.
We want you to be entirely happy with the product you have
ordered, therefore if you wish to return an item not listed above
please inform us within 10 working days of receipt of delivery.
Goods should be returned unopened, unused and wherever
possible in their original packaging. Please contact Customer
Services on 01295 814396 for assistance.
Installation Guides: We have free downloadable installation
guides available from our website. Installations should only be
carried out once the relevant guide has been read and
understood by the installer. Installation constitutes acceptance
of the product.
