Follow in the footsteps of Bonnie Prince
Charlie who escaped to Skye by boat after
his armys defeat at the Battle of Culloden.

throughout the island.
At Kilmuir Graveyard, near Uig, you can see

MacDonald, who helped Bonnie Prince
Charlie escape from Scotland.

built on a rock. The massive exterior is made
up of six separate buildings surrounded with
defensive battlements running the whole
length of the roof line. Enter the castle to see
the grand rooms, which are full of priceless
heirlooms and items thought to have
belonged to Flora MacDonald.

Nature
Skye & Lochalsh is home to some of the
darkest skies anywhere in Europe. With
very little light pollution and nine Dark Sky
Scotland discovery sites, it is the ideal place
to admire the wonders of the night sky.
The Kylerhea Otter Hide in Skye is set in an
incredibly impressive location. The hide is
just a short walk along the forest road and
looks out onto the shore, where you can spot
otters, grey and common seals, and a variety
of seabirds.
Enjoy an evening of Star gazing on one of the
accredited Dark Sky sites at Clan Donald on
25th October.
Ancestral
In November, you can witness the fantastic
Fireworks Spectacular at Dunvegan Castle,
which begins with the burning of the galley,
a replica Viking longship.
Explore the archives, dating back to the
17th century, at the Skye & Lochalsh Archive
Centre in Portree.

geology. See artefacts and get information on

Businesses within these sections are listed in
alphabetical order by business location, then by
business name. Each entry has a map reference
(see example) relating to the map which appears
on page 54 of this guide. The map is helpful if
you dont know where a particular location is in
relation to the area that interests you. The majority
of entries will have a postcode which can be used
to pin point exact location. Where businesses are
listed as being By a town or village it is wise
to check the exact location with the operator
before making your journey. Some listings have
a distance beside the location; this indicates the
approximate road distance in miles from the main
location. These mileages are voluntarily provided
by the businesses themselves.
Pricing
Where prices of admission, services and
facilities are included in entries, these are
based on information received from the relevant
advertisers. Please note that prices include VAT
where applicable and are for your guidance only
(VAT as at January 2014).
Smoking

environment for residents and visitors to our
beautiful country. For further information, visit

a Family Fun
There is a wealth of things to see and do that
will keep smiles on faces all day and boredom at
bay. Attractions which are particularly suitable

' Assistance Dogs
The new Equality Act 2010 protects anybody
who has or has had a disability and people
who experience discrimination because they
are linked or associated with a disabled person.
In respect of assistance dogs the law quite clearly
states that to refuse admission to a registered
assistance dog is now unlawful and constitutes
discrimination under the Equality Act 2012 under
three possible categories: 1: discrimination arising
from a disability; 2: indirect discrimination and
3: disability harassment. VisitScotland is
committed to equality of opportunity and is
working through its Accessible Tourism Project to
educate and inform all our customers about the
requirements under the law. We have encouraged
all our business customers to use the assistance
dog symbol in order to comply with law, or make
it clear in a statement that they welcome all
assistance dogs. It is always advisable to check
with each establishment prior to booking.
X Hearing Loop
Induction loop and infrared systems help people
with hearing loss hear more clearly by reducing
the effect of background noise. When a building
has been fitted with a loop or infrared system, you
will usually find this mentioned in their adverts,
newsletters and at the entrance to the building.
Informative signs and symbols should be displayed
such as the loop sign above, it is always worth
asking if it is not obvious. Please note this icon
is not verified by VisitScotland Quality and
Standards Department.
Dogs Welcome
Dogs are welcome to this establishment, on the
understanding that they are on their leash and
are kept under control. You may have to check
with each establishment whether there are
restricted areas for your dog. Please note this

Standards Department.

we cant tour you or you have a long wait for

in touch rst.
Notes
During our busier summer months there can be a wait for tour availability
on arrival at the visitor centre, as our tour sizes are limited, so advanced
booking is advised if you are on a tight time schedule or if you want to tour
at a specic time. We also strongly advise contacting us if you plan to arrive
for the last tour as this tour can book up well in advance. During the winter
we only have 4 tours a day so to guarantee a place on one of them we again
advise contacting us in advance.

The magic of Waternish
The magic of Waternish, approached by the Fairy Bridge from the
main Portree-Dunvegan road, captures the heart of every visitor. The
rst breathtaking vista takes in Loch Bay and Dunvegan Head reaching
out beyond the islands of Loch Dunvegan to the Outer Hebrides and
Atlantic skies. First-class accommodation and hospitality facilities make this
spectacular peninsula the perfect base for exploring the rich history and
wildlife of the area as well as offering a wide range of outdoor activities
and high quality visitor attractions.
Stein Inn, at the heart of the community and the oldest inn on Skye, and
the world-famous Lochbay Seafood Restaurant, complement numerous
bed-and-breakfast and self-catering facilities. Skyes only 5* visitor
attraction, Skyeskyns, offers free guided tours round their exhibition
sheepskin tannery and showroom, whilst Shilasdair shop and wool
dyehouse is another unique attraction. Youll nd artists studios and
galleries displaying high quality paintings, printmaking and photography;
earthy ceramics from resident potters and a weaver offering traditional
skills. There is also a wide variety of beautiful craftwork and delicious local
produce. With its diving centre, boat trips, jetty and moorings, historic
Stein, a conservation area, is an ideal maritime centre too.
Before leaving Waternish, visitors can walk forestry or coastal trails, see
legendary Annats temple, the Boys Cairn, Trumpan Church, the ancient
fort of Dun Hallin or trek to the lighthouse at panoramic Waternish
Point. With three dark sky discovery sites, the area is a spectacular winter
destination too and last year one of our self-catering cottages was named
by Travel magazine as the best place for a sunset view in the world! And
if all thats too much for a day out, stay a week and explore all north Skye
from this strategic and enchanting peninsula.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Its important to try to reduce waste and recycle as much as possible. You can help by saying no to bags and packaging you dont need, and using the
recycling banks youll fnd in many places across the country.
Eat Local, Buy Local, See Local
Scotlands communities have lots to ofer, from events, crafts and farmers markets to local cafes and tearooms. Ask whats in season and youll be surprised
and delighted by our rich larder of fresh Scottish produce.
3 Chill Out - Switch Of!
Help us reduce light pollution, energy use and carbon emissions by switching of lights and standby buttons when you dont need them.
4 Get Out of the Car!
Take public transport, hire a bike, or dust of your walking boots and discover some of the fantastic places to be found right on your doorstep!
5 Go Wild About Nature
Enjoy our outstanding landscapes, including national parks and nature reserves, and experience some of Europes best wildlife from coast to countryside.
But wherever you go, take care by treading lightly to avoid disturbance and taking away your rubbish.
