Most people do their big cleaning early in the year Spring Cleaning they call it.
Not me! No, I wait until I am the busiest, and then I add more work on myself! Ac-
tually, I dont like major cleaning, so I put it off as long as I can!
Recently, I rented a Rug Doctor and cleaned our sofa, some chairs, and the carpet
in our bedroom. Something inside me just clicked, and off I went to the Kroger to
rent the cleaning machine. Boy, was that a lot of work! First, I put the water and
the chemicals in the wrong reservoir! I couldnt figure why it wouldnt clean proper-
ly. I was about ready to give up, when I had a thought Why not read the direc-
tions? As soon as all went well I cleaned everything in the house! After the sofa
was cleaned, the dog promptly took a seat and began to scold that awful machine that tried to eat
her spot! The cats are still skulking around lest I try to clean them!
Not only the inside needs work: we still have to do the spot painting on the house, do some repairs
to the gables, redo our garden to take out plants, separate and divide others, and to replace a
few, not to mention the regular mowing and weeding. Work always seems to materialize when you
have a home, doesnt it? Along with the daily duties of work, we all have chores at home. Somehow
we never seem to escape them!
You would think that adding a day of work for our com-
munity would be too much for us. I have chosen to look
differently at Gods work - Our Hands Sunday, 7 Sep-
tember. Instead of seeing more work, I have decided it is Gods
way of helping me to share the gospel with others! J esus did the
same kinds of things: he healed the sick, helped the poor, all the
while living the Good News of Gods reign here on earth.
Gods Work Our Hands is Zions way of focusing on our com-
munity in a more intentional way. Its the Churchs way of saying,
There are many ways of sharing the gospel with others, and sometimes it means getting out of
our pews and hitting the streets.
So, why not come join us on Sunday, 7 September as we hit the streets with the Good News of
Jesus! We have several ways lined up for you to get involved: painting chairs at the PATH Center,
helping an elderly woman with a handrail, helping out two members of the congregation, help in
Luther Hall with Quilts of Compassion, and help spruce up the playground at Good Samaritan
School. Before all the fun begins, we will worship outside (weather permitting) and have a picnic
lunch together with hot dogs and hamburgers, and homemade ice cream!
Pr. Tim

There are many ways
of sharing the gospel
with others, and some-
times it means getting
out of our pews and
hitting the streets.

was baptized on
August 2, 2014

Charlotte is the daughter of
Shaun & Alexandria Bussing of Defiance.
Sponsors: Tristan & Michelle Sanders
Grandmother: Sonia Bussing

The Eis family recently gathered around their loved one James C.
and wished him a loving journey to be with our Lord. Those of us
who remain on our journey thank our extended Zion's family for their
comforting words, their outstretched arms and our gathering just as
Jesus asked of us as his children. We thank you for your heart-
warming support. God's blessings to each of you. The family of James C. Eis.

Gods Work. Our Hands.
Sunday, September 7
GET READY TO SERVE!
Once again, we will be participating in the ELCA church-wide day of service on
September 7. We will have an outdoor service followed by a
picnic. The church will provide burgers and hot dogs. Salads,
side dishes, desserts and homemade ice cream will be pro-
vided by church members (think brownie sundaes!) Then we
will start our day of service projects.
Projects this year include: painting chairs at the PATH Center,
helping two church members, building an outside handrail,
spreading the playground material around at Good Samaritan
School, and helping with Quilts of Compassion. Bring your
rakes and shovels.

SIGN UP sheets are posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex. We need more
people to help prepare food and to help with the projects!
FALL BIBLE STUDY
Pastor Tim will be teaching a 12 week class enti-
tled "Jesus, the Forgiving Victim" will meet on
Tuesdays at 7:00 pm on September 2, 9, 23, 30;
October 7, 14, 21, 28; November 4, 11; Decem-
ber 2, 9. Books are available and helpful for this
class. It is a set of 4 books entitled Jesus the
Forgiving Victim by James Alison. The books
can be ordered through Amazon.com. In this
class, James Alisons thought provoking books
help us focus on the importance of Jesus self-
giving example. What does it mean that Jesus
emptied himself? How important is Jesus death
on the cross and what does it mean for you and
me today? These and other questions will be
tackled in the group discussion and the books.

Please register online at the church website at

Women of the ELCA

The 9
th
Triennial Gathering for the Women of the ELCA was a very enjoyable ex-
perience for me. The theme was of many generations and there were 6 generations
present. One of the highlights for me was listening to Bishop Eaton, presiding bishop of
the ELCA, speak not once but twice during the week. She is so uplifting, down to earth,
full of the Spirit, and what a sense of humor.
The first 2-1/2 days consisted of the convention or business portion. I was elect-
ed as a delegate and many things were accomplished. New officers and 12 board
members were elected to the churchwide board. Our new president is Patti Austin from
Georgia. Two of the board members are from region 6. Barbara Miller and Dawn Smith
are both from Michigan. A budget of $2,941,593 was approved. A change to the consti-
tution to reduce the size of the executive board from 12 to 9 was defeated by a vast ma-
jority. Several memorials were passed for: awareness and prevention of human traf-
ficking; bullying, harassment, and related violence; creating safe churches for children;
solar energy for Phebe Hospital in Liberia; and immigration of children in crisis.
The gathering of many generations offered several opportunities of spiritual re-
newal. Speakers during the following 2-1/2 days included Bishop Eaton, Becca Stevens
who is the founder of Magdalene & Thistle Farms which is a community and social en-
terprise that stands with women recovering from violence, prostitution, addiction and life
on the streets; Susan Sparks who is a Baptist pastor, stand-up comedian, trial lawyer,
and breast cancer survivor; Elaine Neuenfeldt from the Lutheran World Federation in
Geneva; and the bible study was led by Diane Jacobson director of the Book of Faith
Initiative for the ELCA. All of these women were so inspiring and encouraging. There
were 12 workshops and 16 servant events to choose from. It was very difficult to select
just four. There were also many exhibitors and vendors.
We were asked to participate in a listening event to discuss, share and respond
to the work of the task force that is working to develop the social statement on women
and justice called for by the 2009 Churchwide Assembly.
We had an opportunity to attend a total of 4 worship services of Holy Communion
during the week with messages from Claire Burkat, Bishop of the Southeastern Penn-
sylvania Synod; Raquel Rodriguez from Global Mission Pastor Linda Norman, treasurer
of the ELCA; and Pastor Callista Isabelle, chaplain at Muhlenberg College. Music was
provided by the Global Musicians of the ELCA.
Women working together can do great things. The offerings collected totaled
$106,510.91. Other items that were collected included: $14,780 in gift cards; 15,877 in
phone minutes; 6,635 toiletry items, 3,716 socks and underwear, 118 quilt kits, 116
quilts, and 1,508 prayer shawls. The attendance for the convention was 363 and the
gathering was 2,382 women.
The next triennial gathering will be in 2017 in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM

All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any con-
cerns or questions you may have had. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needs
and encourage you to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council which-
ever is appropriate. In turn, we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your dea-
con as a present and future friend and confidant. We also want to emphasize the importance of
speaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He wants to know your concerns to help provide a
solution or answers to your questions. He remains the best resource within our congregation to share
wisdom and knowledge.
Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to lis-
ten and we turn to our deacon. In our bi-monthly meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of top-
ics concerning the spiritual welfare of the congregation. Most importantly we are available for you
when your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pastor Tim.
We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zions Lutheran Church and we encourage
you to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. Please call the church office for any assis-
tance.
