INTRODUCTION

Conflict is a part of relationships and life in community, but God always
forgives and always seeks reconciliation. In the Passover, God turned
powerfully toward the Israelites. Jesus calls on his disciples to forgive and
turn toward those who turn away from them. We gather in the name of
Christ, assured that he is present among us with gifts of peace and
reconciliation.

CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.

As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.

We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.

Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favor and further
us with your continual help, that in all our works, begun, continued, and
ended in you, we may glorify your holy name and finally, by your mercy,
obtain everlasting life: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from
whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration
of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify
your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have

O Lord God, enliven and preserve your church with your perpetual mercy.
Without your help, we mortals will fail; remove far from us everything that is
harmful, and lead us toward all that gives life and salvation, through Jesus

A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN

FIRST READING: Exodus 12:114

The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt:

This
month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month
of the year for you.

Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth
of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each
household.
4
If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its
closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to
the number of people who eat of it.
5
Your lamb shall be without blemish, a
year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats.
6
You shall
keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled
congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight.
7
They shall take some of
the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which
they eat it.
8
They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted
over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
9
Do not eat any of it
raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner
organs.
10
You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that
remains until the morning you shall burn.

This is how you shall eat it:
your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and
you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the LORD.

For I will pass
through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in
the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I
will execute judgments: I am the LORD.

The blood shall be a sign for you
on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and
no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall
celebrate it as a festival to the LORD; throughout your generations you shall
observe it as a perpetual ordinance.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the
dead.

Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son,
who reached out to heal the sick and suffering,

and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all.

In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

Lutherans believe the true body and blood of Christ are really present in the Supper
of our Lord under the form of bread and wine and are there distributed and received.
All baptized persons are welcomed to Communion when they are visiting this
congregation. If you wish to commune, please come forward to receive the body of
our Lord Jesus Christ with your hands cupped. If you cannot or do not wish to
commune you may come forward with your hands crossed over your chest for a
blessing.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Peter Claver, priest, missionary to Colombia, died 1654

Born into Spanish nobility, Claver became a Jesuit missionary, and served in
present-day Colombia. His ministry was focused on the slaves that arrived
there. He gave them food and medicine, learned their dialects, and taught
them Christianity.

Saturday, September 13
John Chrysostom, Bishop of Constantinople, died 407

John was a priest in Antioch and an outstanding preacher. His eloquence
earned him the nickname "Chrysostom" ("golden mouth"). Appointed
bishop of Constantinople, seat of the empire, he criticized corruption in the
court. As a result, he was exiled by the empress.

Sunday, September 14
Holy Cross Day

Helena, mother of Constantine, made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and
found what may be the actual site of Jesus' crucifixion. Her son built two
churches there, and the dedication of one of them gave rise to this celebration
of our Lord's victory on the cross.
