In a submission for the 2012 Land Art
Generator Initiative Competition, we
proposed a landscape installation
reflecting the flightpath (particularly
600 metres of this journey) for migratory
birds. The installation, to be located in
Freshkills Park, Staten Island NY (on top of
an old landfill) would involve capturing 50
variations of a birds wing movement, all
welded together in a steel tensile structure;
each wing would span 60 metres and rise
a maximum of 2 storeys. Resistance to
lateral movement would be provided by
way of a galvanized steel mesh covering
(rather then penetrating) the landfill.
Use of a photovoltaic fabric membrane
(made of renewable and natural organic
materials) for the wings could be expected
to generate enough energy to power 550
homes.

Complementary to the competition, an architectural program was proposed
in the studio, sited in Freshkills North Mound, across from the installation.
The Freshkills Park Visual Interpretive Centre creates an interactive learning
experience through five unique viewing galleries, each themed to represent
an element of the park. A collection of viewfinders, manifested by way of
windows and lookouts accompany each gallery. A system of elevated paths/
walkways culminates in the strategically placed lookout points. The galleries
surround a large interior courtyard designated for picnics, outdoor games
and a general rest area for visitors.

To move away from the monotony of low-income
housing, in which apartment buildings of solid
blocks are repeated endlessly, the aim of this
project was to provide an alternative approach to
designing approximately 200 units. In anchoring
the project contextually to its site, a row of single-
family housing is integrated along the southern
edge, adjacent to existing informal housing. The
remainder of the site incorporates 6 stories of
multi-residential units in apartment blocks of
similar height to existing formal housing north
of the site, but in concept fundamentally reliant
on cut-outs to provide lighting, ventilation and
breathing space otherwise not found in typical
apartment blocks. These social cut-outs, also
present in the single-family housing units, consist
of permanent courtyard spaces that are essential
to the basic housing unit in Colombia as well as
cut-outs designated for use as a home-based
enterprise. Both types of housing are to be built
in phases the multi-unit initially encompassing a
two-storey shell with only the first level built and
the single-family unit developed one level at a
time with the onus being on the homeowner. The
project was informed by a two-week study period
in Bogota.
A blog encompassing photographs, thoughts
and sketches were kept of my travel experiences:

Intrigued by the notion of lessons to be learned from
natural construction methods, I became involved in the
conceptualization and construction of a Sheiling Hut for
the Deanery Project located along the Eastern Shore of
Halifax. The hut, to provide a gathering and cooking space
for campers and travelling cyclists, manifested into a physical
and visual exploration of a variety of natural construction
building techniques cob, wattle and daub, torchi, cordwood
and straw/hay bale.

In collaboration with the Mikmaq
community, particularly the local
high school students, a group of
us as part of Dalhousies Cities
& Environment Unit designed
and constructed an outdoor
equipment storage building to
house six canoes, six kayaks and
20 mountain bikes. The rectilinear
structure, running about 20
metres, abuts against a narrow
deck that widens to culminate
into a large square platform in
the rear, offering a distant view of
the Bras dOr Lake. Excluding wall
and roof cladding, the project was
entirely of wood construction.

For Dalhousie Universitys Sexton
Campus, an Innovation and Design in
Engineering and Architecture (I.D.E.A.)
building is proposed in its future.
Developing my own design scheme for
this academic building, the buildings
collaborative nature is to be visually and
programmatically apparent through
the collision of activities and users.
Labs, design studios and classrooms
would collect together to create a
thriving, creative and active work
environment. Materiality is interwoven
both in interior and exterior facades to
reflect the individualism of the different
spaces within the larger context of
various programs and activities coming
together.

LUNENBURG HOUSE DESIGN - An infill dwelling is
introduced into the existing fabric of the old town of
Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. It is situated in the middle of
a three-unit rowhouse. At the urban scale, the dwelling
contributes to the provision of a social facade that is
continuous throughout the neighbourhood. Internally,
the house reflects a sectional parti, with bedrooms/living
placed on the ground level in a cellular layout and an open
plan double-height living space raised to the second level.
A central core throughout the building develops into a
double storey mezzanine office space.

SHELTER: Essentially a private retreat for the
individual, the Room is developed around a very
simple programmatic plan: for sleeping, eating and
writing. The project plays with what defines and
transitions the indoors to the outdoors. Pathways
extrude out of a central core and ultimately come
to rest in outdoor writing pods.
