LINCOLN VIEW
L
ast month, we learned
about my high-school
friend, Debbie Carring-
ton, perseverance and how we
gain strength from others
(August 2014 Lincoln View,
page 3, Attitude + humor +
perseverance = inspiration).
It was because of her parents
and her siblings support that
Carrington has approached life
with a can do attitude. Her
brother and sister never treated
her any differently because of
her shorter height.
The attitude we have can
often be what allows opportu-
nities to come into our lives. In
the late 70s, shortly after we
both got jobs at Marriots Great
America in Santa Clara, Car-
rington was approached by the
department that put on all the
shows. They were looking for
someone to be Baby Bugs in
one of the Looney Tunes stage
productions.
While attending University of
California at Davis, Carrington
continued to work on stage at
Great America but made trips
to Hollywood whenever possi-
ble. Graduating in 1982, Car-
rington caught the movie bug
and all I could think of was Hol-
lywood and how I couldnt get
there fast enough.
Once in Hollywood, Debbie
Lee Carrington took a path in
life that can only be summed
up by how she tries to
approach life.
Its the things in life that you
dont do that you regret, Car-
rington said.
She lived out her acting bug
by working in movies and on
TV, doing stunt work and some
commercials. Carrington creat-
ed a resume that she once only
dreamed about.
Working with Arnold
Schwarzenegger in Total
Recall, portraying Mini Mimi
in the Drew Carey Show, get-
ting to know Michael Jackson
during the filming of Captain
Eo and being a part of the Star
Wars legacy are just some of
what she has accomplished
professionally.
Its not unusual for Little Peo-
ple to have various health
issues due to their small
stature.
In the beginning, they [the
doctors] told my parents I
wouldnt live to be 10 years old
and I didnt think Id live past
my 40s, she said.
So Carrington learned to
really live each day like it could
be my last. Even things that
COMBAT BULLYING - PART 2
Debbie Lee Carrington is seen here on the set
of Total Recall, with Arnold Schwarzenegger
and Rachel Ticotin. Carrington has shown the
world that our only limitations are those that
exist in our own mind. Overcoming fears that
something might be too difficult allowed her to
do stunt work in the movies, hike suspension
bridges in the Amazon and climb to the top of
the pyramids in Guatemala.
fullest
Living life to the
take a lot of effort for me
to do, Im going to do
because I may not be here
tomorrow. Ive taken a lot
of chances and done a lot
of crazy things that were
really good experiences.
Overcoming fears that
something might be too
difficult allowed her to do
stunt work in the movies,
hike suspension bridges
in the Amazon and climb
to the top of the pyramids
in Guatemala.
During the last 25 years
or so, the contact we had
with each other became
less and less, and our lives
took different paths.
If were lucky, however,
we get a second chance at
the good friendships in
life and they end up being
even better the second
time around.
Because Carringtons
parents have now made
Lincoln their home, we
have once again become
part of each others lives.
Due to her work schedule,
Carrington has been able
to visit Lincoln on a fairly
regular basis the last year.
Just like 35 years ago,
her parents always warm-
ly greet me and the
beloved moniker her
father came up with all
those years ago is spoken
again when he asks,
What are the Double
Debs going to be up to?
It still makes me smile.
The one thing about
Lincoln is there is a strong
sense of community and
people watch out for each
other, Carrington said.
When Im out walking in
the neighborhood, peo-
ple will see me from
behind and think Im a lit-
tle girl and ask, Wheres
your mommy, but then
realize their error. No one
would even bother to ask
in LA.
The teen years are
probably one of the most
difficult times we go
through in our lives
Although I always felt that
the other half of The Dou-
ble Debs had it all
together, Carrington
confessed that she felt
just as insecure as every-
one else did in high
school.
No matter who you
are, whether youre the
prom queen or the guy in
ROTC or band, its an
innate part of human
nature to feel that youre
on the outside, Carring-
ton said. We need to
teach our kids that every-
one feels like that and
that its alright.
We should make sure
that our children know
there are far more impor-
tant aspects that they
should possess rather
than the latest gadget or
the coolest clothes. Those
are just things and they
will go out of style.
However, kindness to
others, a good attitude,
embracing diversity,
standing up for whats
right those qualities
will always be in style, can
be passed down through
the generations and will
allow us to walk proud
and stand tall ... regard-
less of our height.

hile many of us have been in this town for a
long time, Lincolns oldest church has been
around even longer.
The Lincoln United Methodist Church will celebrate
its 125th-year anniversary on Sept. 28. The church has
seen many pastors in its 125 years and some will
return to be a part of this wonderful celebration.
The current Pastor, Kevin Campbell, has roots that
are firmly planted here. With his mothers family
being from Lincoln, not only did Campbell
spend many of his childhood summers here
but he was also baptized as an infant in the
century-and-a-quarter-year-old church.
During the 1980s, Campbell lived
in town with his grandmother,
while he attended college. On
July 1, 2013, Campbell
returned to become the
residing pastor.

Sept. 28 will begin at 10 a.m.,
followed by a luncheon and
tour. According to Pastor Camp-
bell, the United Methodist
Women are providing refresh-
ments and some of the women
have been lifelong members of
the church. Campbell went on
to say, We are celebrating 125
years of ministry. Inviting every-
one to come back has kind of
been a homecoming and we
hope we will have a full house.
After the special service, a
reception will be held where old
friends can get reacquainted,
letters from those who couldnt
make it will be read and former
pastors and/or their surviving
spouses will share memories of
their years in the church.
A new banner will be dedi-
cated to celebrate the occasion,
and guests will be able to view
old photos and memorabilia,
Campbell said.
During the celebration, the
first pastor of the congregation,
Rev. McKnight, who served from
1889 to 1890 and from 1892 to
1895, will be remembered.
As one can imagine, the
church is full of history.
However, there is one mystery
that remains to be solved.
The beautiful stained glass
windows have been a part of our
church for a long while, Camp-
bell said, but we dont know
how they got here. The windows
were purchased by Peter Ahart
but we dont know who he pur-
chased them from or why.
Campbell declared that all the
pastors whose names are on the
windows came to California
during the Gold Rush in the
1850s and 1860s.
People think the names are
the early pastors of our own
church but they arent. They are
the pastors involved in the
Methodist movement who
brought the Methodist church
to this part of the state, Camp-
bell said. The windows repre-
sent the history even before our
church in Lincoln was found-
ed.
How often do you attend
church where hometown histo-
ry is combined with a beautiful
sanctuary and a celebration that
has been 125 years in the mak-
ing? Whether youve attended
church services every Sunday
for years or youre new to the
church, Sept. 28 is sure to be a
special day to visit LincolnUnit-
ed Methodist Church.
For more information about
the celebration or attending
church services, call the church
at 645-3588 or visit the venue
at 629 I St.
According to Pastor Kevin Campbell, the churchs stained-glass windows were brought here
during the Gold Rush. Sept. 28 will be a great opportunity to learn more about this churchs
rich history.

parent will tell you,
if you treat some-
thing with importance
and value, your children
will often follow suit.
Teaching your children
about the love of books
and reading is no differ-
ent.
If you talk to some
adults, theyll tell you how
they can get lost in a
book, while, for whatever
reason, others havent
found the appeal of recre-
ational reading.
Although we know our
children cant talk the
minute theyre born, we
still speak to them and
carry on conversations,
albeit one-sided ones.
Just as language is
developed before the
child actually speaks, lit-
eracy is also developed
before the child learns to
read. Even before a child
can read, its not unusual
to see a little one pick up a
book and pretend to
read, maybe trying to
repeat the story as it was
previously read to them.
This is the first step in
learning to love to read ...
having the desire to read.
Literacy is the corner-
stone of education, and
because of its impor-
tance, getting our chil-
dren to love to read is
something that will bene-
fit them for the rest of
their lives. To get your kids
off to a great start to the
school year, try some of
the following tips to
encourage more reading.
positive reinforcement
and incentives. The
incentive to read will be
different for each child.
Regardless of whatever

events of the year, is on Sept. 27.
Hosted by the Lincoln Area Cham-

The inaugural event was in October

Hundreds of hours are involved in
making this event happen. Chamber

with about half the volunteers being
chamber members.
Lincoln chamber volunteers create
a beautiful setting around the down-

tables along Fifth and F streets. The
fountain area is set up with a stage to
feature the Time Bandits, who will
perform dance tunes from 7:30
to10:30 p.m.

Use caution with flea
products and pesticides
around cats!
Recently, three kitties
were presented to our
clinic by a distraught
owner for symptoms that
included ear flicking,
twitching, stumbling and
paw flicking. The symp-
toms were getting worse
over the course of three
days and were first
noticed after the gardener
sprayed for ants with a
pet safe product.
The symptoms were
classic for
pyrethrin/pyrethroid poi-
soning, an ingredient
commonly found in pesti-
cide products, including
those used in the garden,
around the house and in
some commercial flea
products for pets.
The kitties were bathed
repeatedly in Dawn deter-
gent and treated sympto-
matically. So far, they are
doing well, with one kitty
still struggling with mild
stumbling.
What are pyrethrins?
Natural pyrethrins are
an extract derived from
chrysanthemums and
currently, most extract
comes from East Africa. It
is commonly used at low-
er doses in flea and tick
products for dogs and
cats.
What are pyrthroids?
Pyrethroids are synthet-
ic compounds that are
more stable but more
potent than pyrethrins.
Some of the more com-
mon formulations used in
commercial environmen-
tal and pet products are

I
t doesnt seem like summer until
peaches become available.
Whether my son-in-law brings
me some from his grandparents
orchard or I pick some up at the Lin-
coln Farmers Market, this is by far
my favorite summer fruit.
When I was a kid, I didnt like the
frosting that was always on birthday
cakes so Id ask my grandmother to
make me a peach pie for my birth-
day.
Peaches are so versatile and can
be found in so many recipes. If I go
to the store and find something that
contains peaches, its a sure bet that
Ill try it.
If youre looking for something to
do with your peaches, instead of
making the generic pie, then here
are some recipes that will satisfy
your peach cravings.
After a busy day, its sometimes
difficult to put dinner on the table
so we have to plan ahead.
The slow-cooker is something you
can prepare in the morning and the
contents will cook all day while
youre at work. This method of cook-
ing dinner is also a great way to
avoid heating up the house via a hot
oven.
This pork recipe can be used for
sandwiches, tacos or pasta.

INGREDIENTS:
Pastry dough
1 1/2 cup(s) all-purpose
flour
1/4 teaspoon(s) salt
1/2 cup(s) (1 stick) butter,
cold, cut up
4 tablespoon(s) (or more,
as needed) ice water
Peach-raspberry filling
3 tablespoon(s) corn-
starch
3/4 cup(s) sugar
1 tablespoon(s) sugar
1 1/2 pound(s) (4 to 5
medium) peaches, peeled
and cut into thick wedges
1/2 pint(s) raspberries
2 tablespoon(s) butter,
cut into small pieces
1 large egg white, lightly
beaten
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 425
degrees F. Prepare pas-
try dough: in medium
bowl, mix flour and
salt. With pastry
blender or two knives
used scissors-style, cut in
butter until mixture
resembles coarse
crumbs. Sprinkle ice
water, 1 tablespoon at a
time, into flour mixture,
mixing with hands until
dough holds together
(it will feel dry at first).
Shape dough into a
disk. Wrap in plastic
wrap and refrigerate 30
minutes.
Line large cookie
sheet with parchment
paper. On floured sur-
face, roll dough into 13-
inch round (edge may
be uneven). Transfer
dough round to lined
cookie sheet.
Prepare peach-rasp-
berry filling: In large
bowl, combine corn-
starch and 3/4 cup sug-
ar. Add peaches and
raspberries; gently toss
to coat fruit.
Spoon filling onto
center of dough round,
leaving 2 1/2-inch bor-
der all around. Dot fill-
ing with butter. Fold
border of dough up
over filling, pleating
edges and leaving an
opening in center. Pinch
dough to seal any
cracks. Brush dough
with egg white; sprin-
kle with remaining 1
tablespoon sugar.
Bake galette 45 to 50
minutes or until crust is
golden brown and fill-
ing is gently bubbling.
As soon as galette is
done, use long metal
spatula to loosen it
from parchment to pre-
vent sticking. Cool 15
minutes on cookie
sheet, then slide galette
onto rack to cool com-
pletely.
Peach-raspberry galette is a lighter way to enjoy the taste of a peach pie. To
make this something that can be put together when you get home from work,
try using a pre-made pastry crust instead of making your own.

the city and a petition
signed by all of the Gran-
ite Drive businesses to
hold the event down-
town.
With a turnout of more
than 130 cars, nearly 50
chili booths and thou-
sands of guests, Granite
Drive businesses reported
a significant increase in
sales. Realizing that the
event benefitted local
businesses, Hot Chili &
Cool Cars moved to Pacific
Street five years later and
has remained the com-
munitys biggest event
next to Rocklins Fourth of
July celebration,
Jubilee.
Activities include the
popular Boy Scout pan-
cake breakfast, games and
various crafts.
Younger guests can
enjoy the Rocklin Acade-
my-sponsored Kids Cor-
ner, complete with
bounce houses, face
painting, a climbing wall,
and the McDonalds and
Minuteman Press Kids
Coloring Contest.
The Classic Car Show
will return this year with
about 200 cars on Pacific
Street. With hundreds of
beauties, car enthusiasts
will have plenty to get
revved up about.
We are excited to cele-
brate this annual commu-
nity event in Rocklin,
Robin Trimble, CEO of the
Rocklin Chamber of Com-
merce said. We also want
to highlight that a portion
of the proceeds from this
years chili cook-off will go
to the Matthew Redding
Scholarship Foundation.
We are proud to support
such a strong organiza-
tion.

will perform R&B, funk
and Motown to country,

bifenthrin, allethrin, per-
methrin, resmethrin,
cypermethrin, fluvalinate,
cyfluthrin, phenothrin,
tetramethrin and
tralomethrin.
Depending on the for-
mulation and intended
use, the strength of the
pyrethroid varies consid-
erably. This is important
because, if owners mis-
takenly apply a dogfor-
mulated flea product on a
cat, it is toxic and poten-
tially fatal to a cat.
The same holds true for
environmental sprays. If a
cat is exposed to an envi-
ronmental product, it has
the potential to be toxic
and potentially fatal, even
if listed as pet safe.
Due to enhanced ability
for cats to absorb chemi-
cals through their skin,
they are much more sen-
sitive to toxic overdoses of
certain pesticides.
What are the clinical
signs of toxicity?
Clinical signs can
include ear flicking, paw
flicking, stumbling, hyper-
salivation, twitching, vom-
iting, diarrhea, allergic skin
reactions, marked depres-
sion, seizures and death.
Symptoms can come on
slowly or very quickly, and
once noticed, should war-
rant an immediate trip to
your veterinarian.
If at all possible, bring
the packaging or name of
the product that has been
used on the pet or in the
environment.
Early, aggressive inter-
vention is imperative.
Several hours delay can
mean the difference
between life and death.
