A or An is used for singular nouns.


A is used before nouns starting with a consonant sound.
An is used before nouns starting with a vowel sound, regardless of whether the word begins
with a vowel letter.

You use the before a noun when people know which thing or person you mean (definite
article). If you are talking about a particular person or thing you use the.
It can be used for singular and plural nouns.
Example 1:
The tiger is chasing the rabbit. (definite article)
The apple is in the basket.
(singular)
The apples are in the basket. (plural)
If we talk about the same thing again we also use the.
Example 2:

Alex has an apple. He is eating the apple


Jeff has a fish. The fish is in a tank.
Peter has a dog. The dog is barking.
