...The Southern Chaos Wastes...

This vast mass of land occupies near all of the southern hemisphere yet very few of it's secrets are known to any.
For centuries, brave and foolish explorers of every race conceivable have set off to conquer this strange and dangerous land.
Countless expeditions have left the shores of the Old World in search of fame, questing for glory, in hope of incredible wealth...
very few have returned. Of those ships that have made it back, there have been none that have not either had their crews turned
from able bodied seamen to gibbering madmen, or else mysteriously lost their crews altogether...
Oft nights, at an alehouse, somewhere in the Empire, talk will turn to the Southern Wastes. The stories are as plentiful as they
are fanciful. The disputes as heated as they are foundless. Nobody can rightly claim to know if there's even life down there in that
vast and barren wilderness.
There is, however, one thing that all men agree upon. If there is life down there... surely... undeniably... they must play

SWL Fringe Group Page
The SWL Fringe is a freeform group set up where you may find games against other SWL coaches without the need to actually
be in a tournament (there is often a couple of other small experimental/fun tournaments running in fringe, but don't worry about
these for now). In this way it works alot like fumbbl 'ranked'. This is your first stop for games in the SWL! Get active and meet
some of the coaches! Participation and enthusiasm is in fact something we look for before we consider including you for our main
competition and for newbies it will also ensure you get a slightly better chance in the draft for our main divisions (more later) .
It's also a great place to experiment and practice against some of the best without the cheesiness of the ranked environment.
Apply with as many [U] LRB-compliant teams as you wish to the SWL Fringe group. Just go to the bottom of
the group page and apply with your team using the button provided. Once you have applied, join us in irc at #swl and ask if
there are any fringe admins who can accept your team to the fringe group. Look for games simply by asking "Anyone up for a
game of fringe?" in #swl. While not always busy, you should find games readily enough with a little patience.
IRC IRC
Our chat channel also includes the services of Bob_Borc. He's a bot script and I suspect he has designs on taking over from
Fumbbl's Bowlbot lackey! Let's hope not too soon as he's pretty useful for us! Typing 'swl help' in irc will give you an idea of what
he can do as well as provide some links to useful resources in the swl.
Where to Next? Where to Next?
Still not satisfied? Thoroughly enjoy getting your team smashed to a pulp on the pitches of the SWL? For more casual play, you
might like to join Lil Leeg (our stunty group). It's format is very like the Fringe - freeform with the occasional small tournament.
There is also of course, our primary group - the SWL Divisions! (not much else seems to matter once you get into this one!). More
information on each of these is found elsewhere in the document.
If you are dead set on entering the SWL Divisions, be sure to get active in the Fringe. About two weeks before the end of the
current season there will be a call for new or restarting players to enter the Draft - this is your call! More information on this
later in this document.

As you've probably already picked up, SWL Fringe is an experimental group designed to be many things, but mostly a bit of fun
and a place to find regular games against coaches you can enjoy playing against so you dont get withdrawals as the main SWL
Division creeps along at one game a week. It's also a good place for greenskins (newbies!) to meet the SWL coaches and
experiment with your latest team. In many ways, it runs just like the FUMBBL Ranked environment runs (but hopefully without
the cherrypicking that goes on - do that in the fringe and you'll be mercilessly hounded by your fellow swl coaches!). All teams
existing in the group do not have to be in a tournament to play each other feel free to look for games in #swl anytime.
How you use Fringe is up to you. Some of us just look for a relaxing game there, but its also a much better training ground than
ranked as youll find play there is a little less constrained. Here you can practice to your hearts content with a new race or just
get tips in-game with some of our better coaches. Learning how to play dead ard bashy vs non-bashy games or competing in
lopsided TR contests are also essentials required for play in the SWL Divisions and youll find this happens with less fuss in fringe
as coaches are less worried about team building and cherrypicking (and being cherrypicked).
In addition to this, coaches may apply to the one of the extended group of admins to create a small tournament (think sharp and
short here not looking for 32 round tournaments!) of their own design. You may even be temporarily promoted to look after your
own baby while it runs. We hope this becomes something of a community spot for the SWL something we were missing.
You may also join officially sanctioned [L] tournaments not run by the SWL with your fringe teams. These will always be listed on
the group page.

is fixed and nothing is certain! You'll find we often binge on stunty with periods of relative quiet between the binges. Outside of
the tournaments you may look for games in #swl in the same way as you would for fringe.

This is the heart and soul of the league with its promotions and relegations and the chase for the ultimate title of "SWL
Premier"! Do you have what it takes?
!ntr" !ntr"
Your first team in the SWL will be either as a substitute or via the draft for the coming season. Potential substitutes and draftees
need to show that they are enthusiastic enough about the SWL to commit to the SWL Divisions proper (dropouts cause havoc!) -
this is where we check for active participation in the Fringe group.
Entry into the group is with a brand new (TR100) LRB compliant team, however your choice of race for this team is not
automatic. We strive to ensure that there is a diversity of races within the divisions so that the league remains practical in the
long term and also encourages variety. Since this effects what races you can ultimately choose for entry into the SWL Divisions,
we'll digress and yabber on about this a little before we proceed.
Ra#ia Restri#tions Ra#ia Restri#tions
To ensure we have a balanced competition, this the following restrictions are imposed.
Races are divided into 4 distinct groups - Rock (brutal), Scissors (medioka), Paper (soft) and "Dynamite" (bb-challenged).
There is a group cap for each of the first three categories this will fluctuate with the leagues size, usually between 15-20.
No-one will ever be forcibly drafted with a Dynamite race. They are there if people wish to take up the challenge.
There is also a race cap this usually means we only allow a maximum of 3 or 4 teams of any particular race.
Availability of a race is at the discretion of the admins, and is balanced by the draft (see below).
The balance of the races in the SWL may be adjusted from time to time.
The current racial balance and group/race caps for the SWL Divisions can be found on Snorriheim.
Racial Balance Roster
Do not worry too much about the details. There is always some debate over which race should be in which group. These groups are
designed around how much potential damage a race can cause (not on its own armour). This helps us check for consistency when
setting up the individual round robins in each tourney. Ultimately, it has fixed the problems the league was having in SWL VIII.
There is now a lot more variety and the tournament is much more competitive for all teams.
$u%stitutes $u%stitutes
If asked to step in as a substitute, an admin will give you a choice of races that you may choose from. Unfortunately this will
probably be a very small list! If you you are forced to take a race that doesn't tickle your fancy, take the chance to enjoy a
shortened season with them and get used to the SWL Divisions (better than not getting any games at all!). Then sign up for the
'draft' for the next season - you'll have a better chance of getting a race you enjoy in the draft.
The Dra&t The Dra&t
At the end of every SWL Divisional season, a draft call is issued. New coaches or existing coaches wishing to restart with a fresh
team are required to enter the draft if they wish to play in the coming season. The drafting process usually takes approximately 1-
2 weeks. The forums will notify you of the Draft deadlines. To enter the draft, you must send an email to the admins at
swladmin@hotmail.com listing the preferred races you wish to play. Your draft list must be complete, i.e. it must include every
LRB race in order of preference (most to least preferred). You will be appointed your highest preference through the following
process:
Coaches in the draft will be randomly ordered into a draft list save for the following caveats:
Newbie coaches whove participated actively in fringe or regionals are given slightly better chances in the draft.
More experienced/successful SWL coaches are given a slightly tougher run in the draft process (it should be challenging!)
Coaches that have previously dropped out mid-season or forfeited too many games are placed at the bottom of the draft list.
In order of the draft, each coachs preferences are checked against current race/group constraints. They are then awarded their
first available preference that satisfies these constraints.
Coaches will then be advised by PM and via Forum Post the result of the draft and will be invited to enter a fresh TR100 team of
that race. The team must be entered 7 days from the posting of the TR100 Draft results or the coach runs the risk of being
excluded from the next season.
Note: The draft list is an indication of your commitment to play. Once the draft is in, you are expected to commit for the season
regardless of the race you get in the draft. If you pull out after the draft, do not expect to find a favourable re-entry into the SWL in
future seasons. This hardline approach was necessary to avoid a powergaming approach whereby sideliners would continually re-
apply and skip the season until they get the race they desire. We would hope the SWL isnt about powergaming, but simply a place
where BB fanatics come to be fanatically keen about their BB!
Note: There are no restrictions on the number of dynamite races in the league. If we get to a dynamite race down the order of your
preferences, you will automatically be given that one.
Tip: If you luck out and get a team you really arent completely happy with, dig in, get some experience in the divs and just enjoy
the ride for a season. Theres always next seasons draft!

SWL Divisional play is broken up into three tiers.
Premier Division (Uncapped TR)
Premier Division is the top division of the SWL. The winner of the Premier Division is crowned SWL Champion. The TR is
unrestricted. Promotions and relegations are as follows:

1
st
- 4
th
remain in Premier Division.
5
th
- 8
th
relegated to the Conference Divisions.
Note this is a 50% turnover! All Premier Coaches also have an obligation to participate actively in the fluff of the SWL - match
reports, twahnlow votes and general postings to the SWLs Channel BB Forum.
Conference Divisions (TR Cap 200-210)
This is where the day to day grind of the SWL happens! Conferences are where the action is at for most teams and we try to
ensure that all teams ultimately end up here. Standing above the masses and fighting your way up to prem is the challenge! The
Conferences consists of two-four equal divisions of 8 teams each. TR caps for teams in the conferences are given below.
TR 210 teams that finished 2
nd
in the previous seasons Conferences but didnt promote to the Premier Division.
TR 205 teams that finished 3
rd
in the previous seasons Conferences.
TR200 all other teams.
The TR Cap is applied at the start of each season. Promotions and relegations are as follows:
1
st
promoted to Premier Division.
2
nd
if there are less than four Conferences, 2
nd
place getters with the most points in the season are promoted to Premier.
2
nd
- 6
th
remain in the Conference Divisions.
7
th
- 8
th
relegated to the Regional Divisions.
Regional Divisions (TR Cap 150)
The Regional League is rather dynamic and usually consists of one or two divisions, but there may be more. A TR Cap of 150 is
applied at the start of each season. The number of teams and structure of the Regional League will vary dependent upon the
number of coaches in the SWL. This is so we can accomodate new coaches from season to season. The top finishers in this
structure will then earn promotion to the Conference Divisions to replace the relegatees in the following season. If there are also
dropouts in conferences, promotion will go to either the next highest finishers in regionals or teams with a high TR. The admins
will make a decision season by season on who will promote to replace dropouts that ensures the league will run as smoothly as
possible (note this does not apply to regionals coaches promoting to replace conference relegatees youve earned the promotion!).
New teams to the SWL coming through the draft or filling in as a replacement start in the Regional League at TR100. It should be
noted that coaches should consider survival and building up the team as its main priority in its initial season as some teams will
be up to 50TR higher in strength. However, to deal with the issue of teams getting mangled early on, a coach in the Regional
League may choose to replace their team with a brand new TR100 team of the exact same race. This may only be done ONCE per
season and ONLY after permission has been requested and granted. Permission will only be granted in reasonable circumstances.
The death of one player or the loss of a Fan Factor point is not deemed retirement worthy. Conversely, 3 SIs and 2 RIPs and no
cash is a reasonable case for replacement. A reset team will lose all league points achieved to date.
Again, keep in mind that reggies is a building stage for your team. This in fact makes for a different challenge than is usual for
most tournaments. The 50TR difference can be daunting, but so far it hasnt been detrimental to the competition, except that
which is occasionally perceived by new guys who can be flustered by it! After some time in the SWL youll appreciate the challenge
represented by lopsided tournament games youll eventually have to deal with these in either the Conferences or Premier.
Also note, Conferences is ultimately where we want you to be at and well ensure the conference divisions are floated in such a
way so that the regionals never fills up with maxxed out TR150 teams.
TR Ca(s TR Ca(s
The TR caps was something that was introduced to encourage competitiveness for a wider variety of teams. The most optimal TR
for competitive fumbbl play seems to be somewhere around TR200 so this is where the greater portion of SWL Divisional play
occurs at the Conferences. Since the TR Caps have been put in place, weve seen some fantastic competition in Premier and also
seen some teams emerge that once upon a time never had a chance at competing with the best (Amazons and Necromantic having
earned the most recent fame). Note that the TR Caps are effective only at the Start of the Season! Teams may progress higher
than this throughout the course of the season. However, once the season is over and the next seasons placements are allocated,
all coaches must cull their TR to satisfy their respective groups before they play their first game.
Tip: it is wise to wait until seasons placements are allocated before culling due to dropouts you may find yourself promoted and if
youve already culled, this could make for a difficult season!
Di'isiona $#oring Di'isiona $#oring
SWL Divisions run with a scoring structure of 5 pts for a Win, 2 for a Draw, 1 for a Loss and 0 for a Forfeit. In the event of a
team(s) being tied on league points, tie breakers will be used to resolve the deadlock. These tiebreakers in order are:
Head to Head result for that season
TD differential
Most TDs
CAS differential
Most CASs
Toss of Coin / Random Number Draw
In the case that there is no head to head result (e.g. in a tiebreaker across separate groups in the conferences), then an
immediate playoff match is arranged which then counts as the head to head result.
)romotions and Reegations )romotions and Reegations
Promotions and Relegations may not be avoided or turned down! Sometimes this is a difficult burden - promotion can be a tough
ask after your team has been mangled, and relegation with a large TR cull is probably almost as tough. But we insist on
maintaining these to keep groups dynamic and to keep it fair for all involved (turning down promotion will only result in someone
lower down having to face promotion). So take the knocks on the chin like a champ! It's all about how you get up afterwards!

Each round takes one week and the season will run for 7 consecutive weeks. Games must be commenced by 10pm Sydney Time on
each Monday night during the regular season. Coaches are expected to have arranged a mutually acceptable time to play by
Thursday evening of every week. If nothing has been arranged at that point, or a coach is having difficulties finding time to meet
their opponent, an email should be sent as soon as possible to swladmin@hotmail.com explaining the difficulty. Extensions of time
are permitted (see Extensions below) but it is best to raise the issue of scheduling difficulties early rather than just before the
Monday deadline.
!xtensions !xtensions
Where an extension is asked for in the emails, and reasonable circumstances apply, the Admins may choose to grant an extension,
but expect the game to be organized in advance. Extensions are generally no longer than 24 hours, but Admins will use discretion
on the basis of reasonable excuse.
In the case of having an opponent not respond to your PMs, just send an email to let us know youve tried to make contact, but
have had no response and youll be granted the forfeit. Dont ask for an extension, as it isnt likely the other chap will turn up if
hes already failed to respond and it will make getting games for the next round more difficult to arrange.
For&eits For&eits
Unless an email has been sent to the swladmin@hotmail.com by 10pm on the Monday night a game is due, a forfeit will occur. If
neither party has communicated in this manner then zero points will be awarded for the match. If one player has sent an email,
that player will be given the win. A coach who forfeits two games in any given season without an acceptable reason will have the
remainder of his games forfeited automatically for the current season and may be
excluded from divisional play in subsequent seasons.

Dro(outs Dro(outs
One of the main problems in any league is coaches losing interest or having computer/real life issues etc. and dropping out mid-
season. Dropouts that occur in premier will not be replaced. A bye will be accorded to all teams, including those who have already
played that team, and may have lost to ensure fairness in the hunt for the SWLs ultimate prize. Dropouts at conference level
will not be replaced automatically and all remaining games are awarded in favour of their opponents. Regional dropouts will be
replaced immediately with a new team chosen from a potential recruit in the Fringe if one is available. If no coach is available,
then a bye will be awarded for all past and future matches of the dropped team. Any coach dropping out because they think there
team is trashed or has no chance is deemed to have forfeited their rights in the Draft and will be placed at the end. To drop out
midseason unnecessarily is being a bad sport, creates a forfeit and denies your opponents the opportunity for SPPs.

The following are the SWLs rules for various administration issues and our policy on a number of items.
The +dministrators The +dministrators
The SWL is managed by the Commish and a team of Administrators all of which are collectively known as The Admins. These
positions are purely voluntary and conducted in each Administrators personal time. Level of involvement of each person does vary
on personal circumstance but all should be treated equally. The Admins are responsible for all the running of the league and for
the maintenance of other facets of the league including this policy document. During the season, issues and conflicts are
addressed and noted for the end of season rules review. This review is broad and will cover as many issues raised as there were
encountered in the season and then some. Potential administrators are invited by the Commish and are subsequently appointed
upon acceptance of that invitation. The Commish also reserves the right to invite non-administrators into the rules discussion
based on a coachs experience with both FUMBBL and of the SWL itself.
The Administrators collectively operate for the purpose of the League and will not make rule amendments based on one team or
coaches circumstance. Some decisions will not be beneficial to some coaches or teams, but all decisions are made with the view
that the League will be benefited as a whole.

Via the SWL Forum on the FUMBBL site
Via Group or Personal PM

Every coach has a right to make an observation or disagree with a decision communicated to them or the league. However, there
are some preferred options for messages to be relayed to the Admins and to the broader league. Firstly, if you have a general

and the Admins. If, however, you have an issue that affects your personal situation, your team or is likely to be considered
inflammatory, send an email to swladmin@hotmail.com. A response is guaranteed but do allow a reasonable amount of time for
your situation to be reviewed.
We reckon the SWL is the best league on FUMBBL, and a big reason for this is the passion for improvement of the league
amongst our coaches. We like feedback, especially constructive criticism, but personal attacks will not be tolerated, and may
result in expulsion from the league. The Admins give up their valuable time and energy into keeping the league going, and while
we make our fair share of mistakes, were always doing our best. If you think weve made a mistake, point it out in a rational,
reasoned manner, and well have a look at it.

The SWL follows all rules stipulated in FUMBBL re: disconnections. Please see those rules for details. Any deliberate
